Use call screening and spam filtering—not a setting that sends every unsaved number straight to voicemail. On supported iPhones, Ask Reason for Calling screens an unsaved caller before your phone rings, while the separate spam filter silences calls the carrier identifies as spam or fraud. Neither approach can identify every scam, so combine phone controls with your carrier’s options and safe call-handling habits.
Screen unknown callers instead of silencing them
“Unknown caller” usually means a number that is not saved in your contacts; it does not necessarily mean the caller is a scammer. A doctor’s office, school, delivery driver, or business may call from a number you have never saved.
Call screening gives an unsaved caller a chance to identify the reason for the call before it reaches you. Silencing unknown callers is more restrictive: calls from unsaved numbers do not ring through and may go to voicemail. If you need legitimate new callers to reach you, choose screening where it is available and reserve silence for situations where you are comfortable missing unsaved calls.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open Settings → Apps → Phone.
- Under Screen Unknown Callers, select Ask Reason for Calling. The caller is asked why they are calling before your phone rings, giving you a chance to decide whether to answer.
- Leave the setting at Never if you want unsaved numbers to ring normally. Choose Silence only if you want unsaved callers sent to voicemail rather than screened.
- To handle carrier-identified spam separately, go to Call Filtering and turn on the spam filter. Apple says calls identified by the carrier as spam or fraud are silenced, sent to voicemail, and placed in the Spam list.
Apple notes that call screening may use standard calling and data rates, does not screen calls while roaming, and turns off for 24 hours after you call emergency services. It also recommends adding important numbers, such as family, schools, and doctors, to Contacts.
Choose a call-control option that fits your phone line
The right tool depends partly on whether you use a mobile phone, a traditional landline, or VoIP. The FTC advises checking with your phone company and researching call-blocking apps before installing one; some are free and others charge. Its guidance does not establish that any particular app or service will catch every robocall or preserve every legitimate call.

- Carrier services: Ask your provider what call blocking or labeling it offers for your specific line. Confirm what it filters and how it handles unsaved callers.
- Third-party apps: Review app-store ratings and independent reviews before installing. Consider whether the app’s filtering approach suits your needs, since caller labels and detection are not guarantees.
- Traditional landlines: A physical call-blocking device may be an option, but check that it is compatible with your particular phone setup. A landline device is not a solution for a mobile line.

What the Do Not Call Registry can—and cannot—do
The National Do Not Call Registry is free and tells compliant telemarketers not to make covered sales calls to registered numbers. It is not a technical call-blocking feature, so scammers and other callers who ignore the law may still call. The FTC says numbers should appear on the Registry the day after registration, but it can take up to 31 days for sales calls to stop. Register or check your status through the FTC’s National Do Not Call Registry FAQs.

Not every automated call is illegal. The FTC says robocalls trying to sell something are generally illegal unless the company has the recipient’s direct written permission to call that way; some informational calls and other categories may be allowed, and state law may add requirements. Details are in the FTC’s robocall guidance.

- Hang up. For an unexpected recorded sales pitch, do not press a key to speak to an operator or supposedly remove yourself from a list, and do not call the number back. Interacting may lead to more calls.
- Do not treat caller ID as proof. Scammers can fake the displayed name or number, and legitimate-looking caller ID does not establish who is calling. Filters may also miss scam calls.
- Report the call to the FTC. Use DoNotCall.gov and provide your number, the displayed number (even if you suspect it was spoofed), any callback number, and the date and time if known. If you lost money, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- File an FCC complaint if appropriate. The FCC accepts unwanted-call complaints, but says it cannot resolve individual complaints or stop every illegal call instantly. Its unwanted-call complaint page explains its role.
The FTC’s Registry FAQ states that companies violating the Registry or placing illegal robocalls may face a maximum fine of up to $50,120 per call. That is an enforcement maximum, not a prediction of compensation to an individual consumer.
