Protect a Linux system by keeping its supported kernel and platform firmware or CPU microcode up to date, checking the running kernel’s vulnerability status, and choosing any additional restrictions to match the trust level of the workloads. Linux selects CPU-aware mitigations by default in many cases, but the effective protections vary by processor, microcode, kernel configuration, compiler support, and vulnerability family. Verify the actual host rather than relying on a single setting or assuming an update worked.
Why there is no single speculative-execution switch
Speculative-execution attacks cover multiple hardware vulnerability families, including Spectre and related issues such as L1TF, MDS, and TAA. A system can be affected differently by each one, and a mitigation for one family does not establish protection against all the others. The Linux kernel’s hardware-vulnerability documentation describes the relevant families and controls; which controls apply depends on the CPU and platform as well as the kernel.
The kernel generally selects reasonable default mitigations for the processor it detects. Those choices can depend on CPU features, available microcode, kernel build options, and compiler support. Kernel command-line options and process-level controls can change policy, but they are not universal substitutes for platform updates or status checks.
How to check the protections active on a Linux host
-
Record the CPU model, architecture, running kernel, and whether the machine is a virtualization host or guest. These details help explain why two systems may report different mitigation states.

cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v2 -
Keep the literal output for operational records. Values such as “vulnerable,” a mitigation description, or “not affected” are the running kernel’s assessment for that machine and vulnerability. Check the files relevant to the host rather than treating one Spectre result as a summary of every hardware vulnerability.
A mitigation status is useful evidence, not a guarantee that every attack vector is covered. The kernel describes some Spectre v1 protections as case-by-case and notes that they may not cover every possible vector.

How to update the kernel and platform firmware
Install supported kernel updates through the Linux distribution’s normal update channel, and obtain platform firmware or CPU microcode updates through the distribution and hardware vendor’s supported process. Reboot when an update requires it so the new kernel or firmware is active. Exact package names and commands differ by distribution and hardware platform, so use the instructions for the system you administer rather than copying a command intended for another distribution.
After rebooting, check the vulnerability files again. A package being installed does not by itself confirm that the running kernel changed or that a particular mitigation is active.

How to choose a mitigation policy
Keep CPU-aware kernel defaults unless a documented threat model or policy requires a different posture. Before changing a kernel command-line parameter or process setting, consult documentation that matches the running kernel and architecture. Disabling mitigations for performance can expose data to leaks; do not use disable options as a generic optimization.
| Decision area | Questions to ask | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| CPU and platform | What does the live kernel report for this processor? Is relevant microcode available? | Mitigation availability and selection depend on processor capabilities and microcode. |
| Workload trust | Does the system run externally supplied code, handle sensitive programs, or host untrusted guests? | The appropriate posture differs for trusted userspace, protected processes, sandboxed code, and high-security use. |
| Scope | Should the control apply system-wide or only to selected processes? | Kernel boot parameters and process-level controls operate at different scopes. |
| Performance | What slowdown, if any, can the workload tolerate? | Restricting indirect branch speculation can slow affected programs; the impact depends on the workload and platform. |
| Virtualization and SMT | Do untrusted guests share the host, or do workloads share sibling hardware threads? | Guest-to-kernel, guest-to-guest, and SMT sibling-thread exposure have specific mitigation considerations. |
| Verification | What do the vulnerability files report after the change? | The live status reflects the actual kernel and platform combination in use. |
When to use process-level or stronger controls
If only selected programs need additional restrictions, Linux provides process-level speculation controls through prctl(), including PR_GET_SPECULATION_CTRL and PR_SET_SPECULATION_CTRL. Their availability and behavior depend on the kernel and architecture; consult the matching kernel documentation before integrating them into an application or service policy.

For systems that execute untrusted code or host untrusted guests, evaluate whether the policy should restrict the whole system or target specific processes. The kernel documents postures ranging from trusted userspace and sensitive-program protection to sandboxing untrusted programs and a high-security mode that forces Spectre v2 protections on. Stronger restrictions can impose performance costs, so confirm the operational impact for the actual workload rather than assuming a universal penalty.
What virtualization and SMT operators should review
Assess the guest-to-kernel and guest-to-guest paths alongside the host’s CPU and kernel controls. Where simultaneous multithreading (SMT) is enabled, consider whether an untrusted workload could run on a sibling hardware thread. Guest trust, processor sharing, and available kernel mitigations should be reviewed together; a setting suitable for one CPU or hypervisor may not transfer safely to a different platform.
How to verify a configuration change
After installing kernel or firmware updates, changing boot parameters, or revising workload policy, reboot if required and inspect /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/ again. Compare the resulting status with the intended change and retain it with the host’s operational records. The kernel’s sysfs interface is the place to enumerate current vulnerability and mitigation status, but it does not certify that every possible attack vector is eliminated.
