There is no official one-size-fits-all graphics preset that boosts frame rate while preserving readability in DOOM: The Dark Ages. Bethesda recommends lowering the overall Graphics quality level, but does not rank individual settings by their performance or clarity impact. The reliable approach is to check that your PC meets the target for your chosen resolution, use the game’s Benchmark Mode to measure a baseline, and change one setting at a time while checking what remains clear in motion.
Check your PC against Bethesda’s requirements first
A settings adjustment cannot make an unsupported GPU or storage configuration meet the game’s published requirements. Bethesda’s 2025 specifications set three PC targets:

These are Bethesda’s published targets, not a promise that every PC with similar specifications will hold 60 FPS in every scene. Hardware ray tracing is required even at the minimum tier; Bethesda states that a hardware ray-tracing-compatible GPU is necessary to play on PC. Read the complete Bethesda PC specifications before deciding whether a performance problem is likely to be a settings issue.
Use Benchmark Mode to measure changes consistently
Bethesda added Benchmark Mode in its June 18, 2025 PC update. It runs a consistent, nearly deterministic route through selected levels and graphs FPS, total frame time, GPU frame time, and CPU frame time. Find it under Extras in the main menu. Because the route is repeatable, it provides a more useful comparison than changing several settings and judging performance from a different gameplay scene.

- Record a baseline. Run Benchmark Mode at your current resolution, graphics settings, and upscaling configuration. Note the FPS and frame-time graphs, and pay attention to any visible stutter or unclear details.
- Change one thing. Start with Bethesda’s broad recommendation: lower the quality level in the Graphics menu by one tier. Alternatively, change one individual option—but treat its effect as something to measure, not something guaranteed.
- Run the same benchmark again. Keep the route and other settings the same. Compare FPS and frame times with your baseline.
- Check clarity in motion. Look at moving scenes and small or high-contrast elements, not just a still image. If an improvement in performance makes gameplay harder to parse, restore the previous setting.
- Keep or undo the change. If the result is useful, record it before testing another option. This makes it easier to identify which adjustment helped and which one cost too much visible detail.
This is a controlled way to tune your own PC using the game’s measurement feature; it is not a tested universal preset. Bethesda’s June 2025 PC update notes describe the benchmark’s route and graphs.
Work through Bethesda’s troubleshooting checks
If performance remains poor, Bethesda’s troubleshooting guidance covers more than graphics quality. Check the following before assuming a single visual setting is responsible:

- Requirements and installation: Confirm your hardware against the target tier you want. Bethesda says to install the game on an NVMe SSD, not a hard disk, and its minimum specification calls for 100GB of available NVMe storage.
- Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling: Check this setting as part of Bethesda’s troubleshooting steps.
- Overlays and background applications: Close or disable overlays and unnecessary programs while investigating, then compare benchmark results.
- Graphics drivers: Check for driver updates using your GPU maker’s official guidance.
- Graphics quality: Lower the overall quality level in the in-game Graphics settings, then measure and inspect the result.
- Game files: Verify the game files if performance issues persist.
- GPU selection and power settings: Confirm the game is using the intended GPU and review system power settings.
Bethesda’s PC performance troubleshooting page provides its current guidance. It does not specify a setting-by-setting ranking for which individual options offer the best frame-rate gains with the least impact on readability.

Path tracing and DLSS Ray Reconstruction are specialized features, not default recommendations for a performance-focused setup. Bethesda’s June 2025 notes limit support to specified NVIDIA GPUs and warn that attempting path tracing on other GPU models does not assure 60 FPS, correct visuals, or stability. Check the official update notes for the supported models before enabling path tracing.

NVIDIA’s 2025 DLSS 4 article reports an average 4X performance multiplier at 4K on the Ultra preset with DLSS Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation on RTX 50 Series. That is a vendor result tied to its specified setup, not a general expectation for other GPUs or configurations. NVIDIA also says Texture Pool Size 1536 lets RTX 50 Series 8GB GPUs run Ultra settings with minimal image-quality impact; that claim is specific to that hardware class.
