Before buying, verify the exact card and its printed board serial with the seller’s records, ask the responsible card maker about model and warranty, and—where possible—inspect and test the actual card before payment. Treat labels, warranty responses, and software readings as corroborating evidence, not proof on their own.
What you can—and cannot—verify before buying
Counterfeit detection is not a one-clue exercise. A plausible model name in software, a serial-number sticker, or an invoice may support a case that the card is what the seller says it is, but none of those items alone establishes that the GPU silicon is genuine.
NVIDIA documents cryptographic attestation for supported secure-computing deployments. That process uses hardware evidence, device certificates, and reference integrity measurements; it is not a general retail service for buyers checking GeForce cards. NVIDIA’s guides describe collecting evidence, obtaining signed “golden” measurements from its Reference Integrity Manifest service, then comparing them with a local verifier or NVIDIA Remote Attestation Service (NVIDIA attestation overview; evidence collection guide; architecture guide).
NVIDIA’s H100 confidential-computing paper says that verifying a device identity certificate against NVIDIA’s Certificate Authority verifies the device was manufactured by NVIDIA. That statement concerns H100 certificates in a confidential-VM workflow; it should not be generalized into a GeForce serial lookup or ordinary-driver feature (NVIDIA, Confidential Compute on NVIDIA Hopper H100). NVIDIA’s claims guide likewise describes structured checks such as attestation-report signature verification and driver/VBIOS version matching, not simply reading a model name from a consumer utility (NVIDIA claims guide).

Verify the exact card and its identifiers
- Ask for the exact manufacturer and model. GeForce cards are commonly made and warranted by an add-in-board partner, so “RTX [model]” alone may not identify the product responsible for support. Request a clear photo of the card’s own label and printed serial, not just the retail box, and compare the physical card with the maker’s official model materials.
- Compare the board serial with the seller’s records. NVIDIA’s management-interface documentation says the serial number shown there matches the serial printed on each board. NVIDIA separately describes a GPU UUID as an immutable identifier that does not correspond to a physical board label (NVIDIA System Management Interface documentation). Compare the printed serial with the box, invoice, and seller-provided records, but remember that a matching label only establishes consistency among those records—it does not authenticate the silicon.
- Ask the card maker through its official support channel. Provide the precise model and serial and ask whether it corresponds to a known product and what warranty or service route applies. A plausible serial or a warranty-related response is useful corroboration, not a standalone authenticity certificate.
- Test the specific card if the transaction allows it. In an in-person sale, inspect and test that physical card in a working system before paying. Check what the system reports and whether the card behaves as expected for the claimed model, but use software output as corroboration: a modified card or firmware can undermine reliance on one software signal. The sources cited here do not establish a guaranteed consumer utility or visual cue that conclusively identifies counterfeit GeForce cards.
Check who is responsible for warranty and service
Do not assume NVIDIA directly warranties every GeForce card. NVIDIA’s EU Product Warranties FAQ says GeForce cards bought through NVIDIA partners are warranted by the add-in-board partner, naming ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, EVGA, and others; Founders Edition cards are covered directly by NVIDIA (NVIDIA Product Warranties FAQ, EU site). Confirm the terms with the actual card maker and account for the card’s region and whether it is new or used.
Warranty duration is not universal. NVIDIA’s US graphics-card warranty page lists a three-year period from purchase for covered new products within that page’s scope, while also saying the warranty does not extend to someone acquiring a warranted product on a used basis. The page was last updated July 19, 2016, so do not treat it as a current blanket term for every GeForce or partner card; check the exact model’s applicable regional terms (NVIDIA graphics-card warranty, US). NVIDIA’s EU FAQ says terms vary by product line and region.

Reduce the risk of the transaction
These precautions do not detect counterfeit hardware by themselves. They improve your ability to make an informed decision and recover if the sale goes wrong.
- Prefer a seller or marketplace with a meaningful return process, and confirm the deadline and conditions before paying.
- Check seller history, ask for an invoice or proof of purchase, and preserve the listing, messages, photos, and payment receipt.
- When buying in person, request a reasonable opportunity to inspect and test the exact card before money changes hands.
- Decline a sale if the seller refuses reasonable inspection, offers only generic or inconsistent photos, or pressures you to pay immediately. Those are transaction-risk signals, not proof that the card is counterfeit.
How to weigh the evidence
As a practical judgment—not an NVIDIA scoring standard—give more weight to several independent, consistent checks than to one attractive clue. The strongest practical case combines an identifiable physical card and consistent serial/model records, confirmation from the responsible board partner, observed behavior from the actual card, and a seller with usable documentation and recourse. A sticker, screenshot, software readout, or warranty answer should not carry the decision by itself.
