Verify an e-way bill (EWB) in the official portal using its EWB number, date, generator ID, and document number, then compare the returned record with the underlying invoice or other document and the consignment about to move. Check that the bill is fully generated, its Part B reflects the actual conveyance, and its validity covers the planned movement. Fix discrepancies before dispatch: Part B can be updated, but most other errors require cancellation and fresh generation if cancellation is still permitted.
How do I verify an e-way bill?
- Open the official E-Way Bill Portal and choose its search or verification option.
- Enter the EWB number, EWB date, generator ID, and document number. These four identifiers are the portal’s stated lookup details for checking authenticity or correctness, according to the E-Way Bill System FAQ.
- Compare the result with the source invoice, bill of supply, delivery challan, bill of entry, or other applicable document. Check the parties, document reference, goods, and movement details.
- Check Part B against the vehicle or transport document that will actually carry the goods. The portal guidance says the conveyance on the EWB should match the conveyance carrying the goods.
- Confirm the bill has been generated and is within validity before dispatch. Keep the applicable accompanying document available with the person in charge; the FAQ says the EWB copy or number may be carried electronically.
A generated number alone does not show that the bill matches the goods, route, or actual vehicle. Resolve discrepancies before movement.
Is a Part-A Slip a completed e-way bill?
No. A Part-A Slip temporarily stores document information; it is not by itself a completed EWB for the movement. For road transport, enter the vehicle number in Part B; for other modes, enter the relevant transport-document details. Verify the generated EWB after completing those details.
What should I do if information is wrong?
The remedy depends on where the error is and whether the bill can still be changed or cancelled.

Do not try to solve a Part-A error by changing the vehicle field, or treat cancellation as available after an in-transit verification. If a bill has already been verified, or the 24-hour window has passed, consult the portal’s current help material for the specific situation rather than assuming it can be cancelled.
What if the portal reports a VAHAN or vehicle-record mismatch?
An alert can mean the vehicle is unavailable in VAHAN or its registration record is duplicated across RTOs. NIC’s vehicle FAQ advises the vehicle owner to contact the concerned RTO to update registration data. If VAHAN shows the vehicle but the EWB portal does not, submit a grievance to the EWB helpdesk. A format correction will not resolve an underlying registration-data mismatch.

What if the vehicle breaks down or the load is transshipped?
Before the goods continue moving, update Part B with the replacement vehicle or applicable transport details so the EWB describes the conveyance actually carrying them. The portal FAQ permits repeated Part-B updates while the bill remains valid. If a different transporter has been assigned, the latest assigned transporter may update Part B.
How long is an e-way bill valid?
The current EWB FAQ gives regular transport one day for every 200 km or part of 200 km, and Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC) one day for every 20 km or part of 20 km. Validity expires at midnight on its last day. The clock starts with the first Part-B entry; later Part-B entries do not restart or recalculate it. Check the current portal guidance for the specific movement.

There is a version discrepancy in official material: the older GST E-Way Bill Rules PDF still displays a table based on 100 km per day, while the portal FAQ uses 200 km per day and the portal notice says the change from 100 km took effect on 1 January 2021. For the current rate, use the later portal update and current FAQ rather than the old table.
If validity is about to expire or has expired
Do not continue moving goods after expiry on the assumption that an update automatically extends the bill. The FAQ describes an extension process for exceptional circumstances and transshipment, including an eight-hour timing condition. Extension is not automatic; check the current portal workflow and rules for the case before proceeding.

Why might generation or an update fail?
Portal validations change. The API error catalog distinguishes, among other cases, invalid vehicle formats, lapsed validity during a vehicle update, and an EWB verified in transit that cannot be cancelled. Portal announcements include additional generation validations effective 2 December 2025 and a relaxation for certain HSNs effective 1 February 2026. Record the exact error text or code and consult the current portal announcements and help material; a static third-party error list may be out of date.
Can the recipient review or reject an EWB?
A recipient can review or reject an EWB created against its GSTIN. The FAQ says no response within 72 hours of generation, or before delivery if that comes first, is deemed acceptance. The rules phrase the period as 72 hours after the details are made available on the portal. Silence is a deemed acceptance under that stated window, not a separate verification that the EWB matches the goods; see the FAQ and Rules.

Does every goods movement require an e-way bill?
No universal answer applies to every movement. Applicability depends on current central rules, notifications, exemptions, and relevant State or Union Territory provisions. Check the rule for the movement type and jurisdiction rather than assuming every consignment needs an EWB or relying on a single threshold.
