You can improve smart-home security without VLAN support by putting devices on a guest or IoT Wi-Fi network that blocks access to your main network. First confirm what your router’s isolation setting actually blocks: a guest network may separate devices from your main LAN, while client isolation may only stop wireless clients from communicating with one another. Then move devices gradually and test local controls and automations.

Check what your router can isolate

In your router’s app or manual, look for “guest network,” “IoT network,” “isolate from local network,” “allow local access,” or “client/AP isolation.” The labels are not interchangeable. Find out whether a setting blocks smart-home devices from reaching the primary LAN, blocks clients from reaching one another, or does both.

A guest Wi-Fi name alone does not guarantee isolation. Government consumer guidance recommends separating devices on a guest network, and Australia’s national cyber security agency specifically suggests an additional Wi-Fi network for IoT devices. Whether that separation works as intended depends on your router’s implementation. Consumer guidance on guest networks and Australia’s IoT network advice explain the recommendation; check your own router’s documentation for its behavior.

Check the router’s mode and software

Isolation behavior can change with the router’s operating mode and software version. For example, TP-Link says Deco guest and main networks are isolated in router mode; in access-point mode, an “Allow Local Access” control determines whether guest clients can reach local resources. TP-Link also cautions that features vary by model and software version, so treat this as a model-specific example rather than a universal rule. Check TP-Link’s Deco documentation for the relevant model.

Choose an isolation approach

Option What it can do What to check
Router guest or IoT Wi-Fi Separate smart-home clients from the primary network when local access is blocked. Verify the behavior in your router’s current mode and firmware; “guest” does not mean the same controls on every router. Agency guidance and the TP-Link example.
Client/AP isolation Prevent wireless clients on the same SSID from communicating with one another. It may not create a separate routed network, and it can disrupt local discovery, setup, casting, hubs, or automations. Isolation-setting guidance and Google’s local-network requirements.
Second router Create a distinct downstream network, depending on how it is configured. It can introduce double NAT and other topology tradeoffs. Google documents that double NAT can affect some use cases; bridge mode in its product ecosystem also removes some features and protections. This is not a universal setup recipe. Google’s double-NAT and bridge-mode guidance.
Replace or upgrade router/access point Provide guest-network controls or more granular isolation settings. Check documented isolation behavior, management mode, required Wi-Fi bands, update support, and compatibility with local controls. No specific model is tested or recommended here. Vendor mode guidance and client-isolation guidance.

Move devices and test the functions you use

  1. Start with one low-impact device. Connect it to the guest or IoT network and confirm that it joins Wi-Fi and remains reachable through its usual control method.
  2. Test local features, not just internet access. Try setup, discovery, casting, voice-assistant control, hub connections, and local automations that your household uses. A device can still reach the internet while a phone or hub on the main network can no longer reach it.
  3. Check whether a local-access exception is available. If a required function fails, review the router’s documentation for a setting that allows local access. Understand which devices or networks it exposes before enabling it.
  4. Apply the change to other devices in stages. Confirm each device’s essential controls after moving it; do not assume that every product in the home uses the same communication path.

Google says AP/client isolation can prevent Chromecast or Google Home setup because those devices need to communicate over the local network. That is why a successful internet connection alone does not prove your smart-home setup still works. Google’s setup guidance describes the limitation.

Keep the router’s basic protections enabled

Network separation adds a layer of protection; it does not make a network impenetrable. Use WPA2 or WPA3, replace the router’s default administrator credentials, install updates, and disable remote management, WPS, and UPnP if you do not need them. Security guidance on router protections and additional router security guidance cover these measures.

When the current router is not enough

If your router has no suitable guest or IoT network, or its controls do not provide the separation you need, consider a router or access point with documented isolation behavior. Before buying, check its supported operating modes, whether guest clients can reach the primary LAN, whether client isolation is separate from guest networking, available updates, the Wi-Fi bands your devices require, and whether your local-control setup will continue to work.

A second router is another possible route, but its configuration can introduce double NAT. The effect depends on the topology and devices involved; Google’s documentation describes some double-NAT impacts and bridge-mode tradeoffs within its own product ecosystem, not a universal configuration for every home. Review Google’s guidance before changing network topology.
