Put IoT devices on a dedicated network or VLAN, then use firewall rules to restrict what they can reach while permitting the phone-to-device traffic the control app needs. Keep client or AP isolation off where it would block local communication, and check whether the app needs mDNS forwarding to discover devices across networks. Exact settings depend on the router, access point, firmware, device, and app.
Know which kind of isolation you are enabling
Network separation and client isolation control different traffic. Network or zone firewall rules govern traffic between networks or VLANs. Client isolation blocks communication between devices connected to the same access point, even when they share a VLAN. UniFi describes this distinction in its network and client isolation guidance.
A guest-network or client-isolation switch is therefore not automatically a substitute for a separate IoT network with selective routing. For example, TP-Link says its Device Isolation feature can leave isolated devices with internet access and allow them to communicate with one another, but blocks data transfer with devices on the home network. If the phone stays on the home network, that behavior may prevent local control unless the router offers an appropriate exception or routing arrangement. See TP-Link’s Device Isolation guide.
Set up the network and rules
- Check the router’s feature support. Look in its documentation for a dedicated IoT network or SSID, VLAN support, inter-network firewall controls, and any guest-network setting that permits access to the local network. Do not assume a guest SSID allows the exceptions your app needs. Available controls vary by model and firmware; TP-Link notes that Device Isolation may require a firmware update and applies only to specified models and versions.
- Place IoT devices on the separate network. Keep the phone on the trusted or main network if your aim is to limit IoT devices’ access to the rest of the home.
- Restrict traffic between networks deliberately. Start by preventing IoT devices from initiating unwanted connections into the trusted network. Then permit the phone or trusted network to reach only the devices and services required for control. Firewall behavior and the right rule direction depend on the router and device protocol; there is no universal port list or rule template established here. Confirm requirements in the router, device, and app documentation.
- Check discovery if the app cannot find a device. An app may use multicast discovery, such as mDNS, which a router may not forward between VLANs by default. Look for an mDNS repeater, reflector, or proxy. UniFi documents mDNS as a cross-VLAN option for smart-speaker and casting scenarios in its broadcast-traffic guidance. Discovery and subsequent control are distinct; forwarding mDNS alone does not guarantee every app function will work.
- Use client or AP isolation only when its scope fits. Avoid enabling it indiscriminately on the IoT access point: it can prevent devices connected to that access point from communicating with each other. ASUS also documents AP-isolation limitations for its illustrated two-router wired setup in its AP Isolated feature guide.
- Test after each change. From the phone, check whether the app discovers the device and whether control works. Also check any other functions that require local access before treating the setup as complete.
Choose settings by the traffic they actually block
- Scope: Does the control block traffic between VLANs, between clients on one access point, or between guest and local networks?
- Direction: Can the trusted phone initiate control while IoT devices remain unable to initiate connections into the trusted network?
- Discovery: Does the app use mDNS or another multicast or broadcast mechanism that may not cross networks automatically?
- Granularity: Can rules target a particular phone, device, or service, or does the feature isolate all clients as a group?
- Compatibility: Is the feature supported by this router and access-point model, hardware revision, region, and firmware?
Vendor documentation describes particular products, not a universal recipe. The exact app and device determine which local traffic must remain permitted.
