Then compare only the capacities offered for the exact iPhone model you want. More iCloud storage can help manage photos and backups, but it does not increase the phone’s built-in storage.
How to choose the right iPhone storage size
- Check your current use. On your iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see used and available space and which categories or apps take the most room.
- Identify what you want to keep on the phone. Photos and videos, music, apps, games, and other content use device storage. Consider whether you download media for offline use or use large games or creative apps.
- Decide what must remain available without a connection. If you want a large local photo library, video collection, or set of downloads, allow for that when comparing capacities.
- Account for likely growth. If you plan to keep the phone for several years or expect to take more photos and videos, choose a tier that leaves room beyond what you use today.
- Compare the available capacities on your chosen model. Apple’s storage tiers vary by model; consult its iPhone model identification and capacity list before deciding.
This is a practical decision process based on the types of content Apple says use device storage and its storage-management options; Apple does not publish a universal storage threshold for different kinds of users.
What capacities are available on current iPhones?
Storage choices differ across the lineup, so a capacity offered on one iPhone may not be offered on another. Apple’s 2026 Environmental Progress Report lists configurations for products sold as of March 11, 2026. It lists these iPhone 17 family configurations:

These are the report’s configurations for products sold as of that date, not a guarantee of current availability in every country or shop. Check Apple’s model list for the specific device and market you are considering.

Is 128GB enough for an iPhone?
It can be enough if your current storage use is modest, you do not keep many large files or downloads on the phone, and you are comfortable managing content as needed. It may feel restrictive if you keep a growing photo and video library, install large games, or want lots of media available offline. First check whether the model you want is sold in 128GB; not every iPhone offers that tier.
Should you get 256GB or 512GB?
Compare the extra purchase cost with the value you place on keeping more content locally and avoiding frequent cleanup. The lower tier may suit you if it comfortably exceeds your current use and expected growth. The higher tier may be worthwhile if you routinely record or retain large amounts of video, download substantial media, use large apps, or plan to keep the phone for a long time. These are conditional trade-offs, not a universal rule for a particular type of user.

Does iCloud storage increase iPhone storage?
No. iPhone storage is the built-in capacity on the device; iCloud storage is separate space for items such as photos, files, notes, backups, and synced data. Buying more iCloud storage does not change the phone’s internal capacity. Apple says a new iCloud setup includes 5GB of free storage. If that space fills, the device will not back up to iCloud and new photos and videos will not upload to iCloud Photos. See Apple’s guidance on managing iCloud storage.
How Optimize Storage affects the choice
With iCloud Photos, Optimize iPhone Storage can keep space-saving versions on the device while the full-resolution collection remains accessible through iCloud. This can reduce local storage pressure, but it is a management feature—not an upgrade to the iPhone’s built-in capacity. Apple explains the option in its photo and video storage guidance.

Why does available storage differ from the advertised capacity?
The capacity Apple lists and the amount software reports can differ because storage uses different unit conventions in measurement and display, and iOS and other content occupy space. As a result, a phone will not show the full advertised figure as available for your own files. Apple explains the distinction in its storage measurement guidance.
