Start with internet and HTTP fundamentals, Git, and one server-side programming language. Next, build a small API backed by a relational database; then add authentication, tests, and deployment. You do not need to master every backend technology before you can make a useful project.
What backend engineering covers
Backend engineering is the server-side work that makes an application function: handling requests, applying application logic, storing and retrieving data, controlling access, and operating the service. The field also includes practices such as testing, deployment, security, and monitoring. A broad roadmap can include many tools and architectures, but it is a map of the field—not a prerequisite list for a beginner. roadmap.sh’s backend roadmap spans fundamentals, databases, APIs, security, testing, CI/CD, containers, messaging, and observability.
What should you learn first?
Learn the foundations in an order that lets you build something early. You can revisit and deepen each area as your project exposes new questions.
- Internet and HTTP fundamentals. Learn how requests and responses work, common HTTP methods and status codes, and the basic roles of DNS and hosting. Your goal is to follow a request from a client to a service and understand the response it receives. The backend roadmap identifies these as foundational topics.
- Git and one server-side language. Learn basic version control, then choose one language and stick with it long enough to write, run, debug, and organize a small application. The roadmap lists JavaScript, Go, Python, Ruby, Java, C#, PHP, and Rust; it does not establish one as the universal best beginner choice. Start with the language that fits your goals and has learning materials you can use. The roadmap.sh beginner FAQ also recommends learning a server language and its package manager.
- Relational data and SQL. Learn how to model tables and relationships, and practice creating, reading, updating, and deleting records (CRUD). SQL and relational database basics are a practical early focus for a typical data-backed API. The roadmap lists PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle, and SQLite; choose based on your project and learning environment rather than trying to learn them all at once.
- A small HTTP API. Build a few routes that accept requests, validate input, interact with your database, and return appropriate responses and errors. A framework can help you get started, but make sure you understand the request handling your code implements. The beginner FAQ recommends starting with a simple REST API.
- Authentication, authorization, and tests. Add a way to identify users, rules for what they may access, and automated checks for expected behavior. The roadmap covers web security and unit, integration, and functional testing; you can learn the relevant parts as you add features.
- Deployment and operations. Put the working service somewhere it can run, and learn how to configure and update it. CI/CD, containers, and observability are part of the broader field, but you can begin with the simplest deployment approach that works for your project.
What should your first backend project be?
Choose a small service with a clear data model and API. A task tracker is one useful example: tasks have fields and can be created, viewed, edited, or deleted. You can add validation, user access rules, database queries, automated tests, and a deployment walkthrough one at a time. This makes the project a way to practice connected backend skills rather than a checklist of disconnected tools.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you want a defined prompt, roadmap.sh’s backend project catalog includes a URL-shortening API, a markdown note-taking app, a caching proxy, a multi-container application, and an e-commerce API. Start with a scope you can finish. Add a capability when it teaches something relevant, not simply to increase the number of technologies in the project.
How should you compare languages, databases, and API styles?
There is no single stack established as best for every beginner or project. Compare choices against what you need to build and what you can explain and complete.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Project fit: Does the technology address a real requirement, or is it present only because it is popular?
- Data shape and consistency: Would relational tables represent your data clearly? Consider a different database category only when the project’s data or access patterns give you a reason. The roadmap presents several database types without naming one best for all cases.
- API needs: A straightforward HTTP/REST interface may be enough for a small service. The roadmap also lists GraphQL, gRPC, and other API topics; explore another style when your project has a concrete need for it.
- Ability to demonstrate your work: Can you explain your schema, input validation, access rules, tests, and deployment? Those are more informative than a list of frameworks alone.
- Learning cost: Can you finish with one language and a small set of supporting tools before adding another database, service, or infrastructure layer?
When should you learn advanced backend topics?
Caching, queues, containers, microservices, Kubernetes, and distributed systems belong to the wider backend landscape, but they do not need to be your first lessons. The roadmap includes them alongside foundational skills, while the beginner guidance emphasizes programming, databases, APIs, Git, and projects. Build a working service first; then study an advanced topic when a real requirement or limitation gives you a reason to use it.

There is no reliable universal timeline established by these learning sources. Progress depends on your prior experience, available study time, target role, and the depth of practice. A more useful measure than a promised number of weeks or months is whether you can build and explain a service: how it handles requests, models and stores data, validates input, controls access, tests behavior, and runs after deployment.
