Choose the highest-quality quantization that fits your model in the runtime you plan to use, with enough memory left for context and inference overhead. Then compare candidates from the same base model and test them on coding tasks you actually perform. A label such as Q4 or Q5 alone cannot tell you which will produce better code.
What quantization changes—and what it does not tell you
Quantization stores model weights at lower precision to reduce their size. That can make a model practical to run with less memory, and may affect inference performance, but it can also reduce accuracy. The llama.cpp quantization documentation describes evaluating quantization loss with measures such as perplexity and Kullback–Leibler divergence (KLD).
Quantization names are not universal quality grades. Q4 and Q5 identify formats or precision schemes, but the effect depends on the model, quantization method, and runtime implementation. Compare options for the same base model, using the same tokenizer and evaluation conditions—not labels across unrelated model families.
Will the model fit in your memory?
Start with fit: the model and its runtime must fit the memory available on the system where you will run it. Consider the model file size, runtime allocation, and the extra memory needed for context and inference. Depending on your setup, storage, system RAM, or device memory can be the limiting resource. The llama.cpp quantization documentation discusses RAM and disk needs, while its SYCL backend documentation describes device-memory constraints.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the actual file size and allocation reported by your chosen runtime rather than relying on a generic sizing chart. The legacy quantization README includes a memory and disk table explicitly marked outdated, so it should not be treated as current sizing advice. A SYCL example for a 7B Q4_0 model illustrates memory considerations for that backend; its figures are specific to the example, not a universal rule for other runtimes, hardware, contexts, or models.
How to choose between quantizations
- Identify the exact model and runtime. Confirm the model revision and the formats your runtime and hardware backend support. This guidance is grounded in GGUF and llama.cpp documentation; other runtimes may support different formats or implement them differently.
- Set a realistic memory budget. Check candidate file sizes and, where available, the runtime’s reported memory allocation. Include headroom for context and inference rather than treating the model file size as the entire requirement.
- Start with the largest quality-oriented option that fits. If it will not fit with useful headroom, try a smaller quantization and check again. There is no universally best quantization level for coding established by the documentation.
- Compare evidence for the same model. If the project provides perplexity or KLD results for your exact model, use them as comparative evidence under the documented conditions. Treat perplexity values cautiously when tokenizers differ.
- Test your coding workload. Run the candidates on a small, repeatable set of code-generation, code-editing, explanation, and repository-context tasks. Keep the prompts, context, runtime, and settings consistent; record the model revision and quant file so results remain interpretable.
- Measure speed on your setup. Quantization methods can differ in speed, but the reviewed documentation does not establish a universal speed ranking. Benchmark with the runtime and hardware you intend to use.
Does Q4 or Q5 give better coding results?
There is no general answer that Q5 always writes better code than Q4, or that either label guarantees a result across models. Lower precision can reduce size, but the quality effect should be judged for the particular model and format. If both options fit, compare them under identical conditions on your own representative coding tasks; weigh any observed quality difference against memory use, speed, and compatibility.

Perplexity is a next-token prediction metric, not a coding benchmark. llama.cpp warns that perplexity values are not directly comparable across models with different tokenizers. It also notes that a finetune can have higher perplexity while producing output that people rate more highly. Use perplexity as one diagnostic for language-model loss, not as a substitute for evaluating code.
What published perplexity figures can—and cannot—show
The llama.cpp project’s Llama 3 8B scoreboard reports the following model sizes and perplexity values for its documented evaluation setup. These figures illustrate one model and setup; they do not measure coding quality or predict the ranking for another model.

| Format | Model size | Perplexity |
|---|---|---|
| FP16 | 14.97 GiB | 6.233160 ± 0.037828 |
| Q8_0 | 7.96 GiB | 6.234284 ± 0.037878 |
| Q6_K | 6.14 GiB | 6.253382 ± 0.038078 |
| Q5_K_M | 5.33 GiB | 6.288607 ± 0.038338 |
These are values reported by llama.cpp’s perplexity documentation and Llama 3 8B scoreboard, accessed in 2026. They are not a universal comparison across model families: implementation and evaluation details matter, and tokenizer differences make perplexity values unsuitable for direct cross-model comparisons.
When an importance matrix is worth considering
For an advanced quantization workflow, llama.cpp provides llama-imatrix to generate an importance matrix from calibration text, which can then be supplied to llama-quantize. This is an optional way to guide quantization, not a guaranteed quality gain for every model or calibration corpus. The project describes the workflow in its importance-matrix documentation.

Keep a simple comparison record
For a useful head-to-head test, hold the workload and settings steady and record the details that can change the outcome:
- Base model and revision, plus the exact quantized file.
- Runtime, backend, and hardware.
- Context length and relevant generation settings.
- Actual memory allocation, task results, and measured speed.
This makes the tradeoff concrete: choose the smallest option only when its memory or operational advantage is worth any quality difference you observe for your work.
