What “customize” means for each device
These options offer different levels of control, so the easiest choice depends on what you want to change.
- Supported Echo Spot personalization: Amazon’s Echo Spot (2024 release) help page documents clock faces, color themes, 12- or 24-hour clock format, and night mode. These are straightforward built-in options, not a new operating system or unrestricted interface.
- Jailbreaking a 2017 Echo Spot: Community-maintained TECHO5 documentation describes an unlock and custom-software process for the first-generation model, codenamed
rook. It is a model- and firmware-specific modification, not an ordinary Echo setting. - Building a Raspberry Pi kiosk: Raspberry Pi’s kiosk guide shows how to launch a browser or application full-screen. You choose the page or app and provide the Pi and display hardware.
In short, supported Echo settings take the least effort; a Pi kiosk takes more assembly but gives you broader control over what appears.

Choose based on what you want to do
Change the bedside clock’s look
Use the Echo Spot’s supported settings. Amazon documents clock-face and theme choices, clock format, and night mode for the 2024 release; this does not require unlocking the device.
Show a custom dashboard or webpage
Choose a Raspberry Pi kiosk. The official tutorial describes starting directly into a full-screen browser or application, making this the clearer route when you want to decide what the screen displays.

Reuse a 2017 Echo Spot
A community unlock and custom-software route is documented for the first-generation Echo Spot, including its rook codename. Confirm the exact model and firmware requirements in the community setup documentation before proceeding. The process uses the micro-USB port beneath the back cover; a data-capable cable may be relevant, but having one does not establish compatibility or make the modification risk-free. This is not an official Amazon process.
Customize a 2024 Echo Spot
Use the documented personalization options. The sources cited here do not establish a jailbreak path for the 2024 release, so do not apply instructions for the 2017 model to it.

What a Raspberry Pi kiosk requires
For the browser-based procedure in its tutorial, Raspberry Pi lists a Pi, suitable power supply, microSD card, display cable, and monitor. The guide specifies Raspberry Pi 3 or newer with at least 1 GB of RAM for that approach; treat this as the tutorial’s requirement, not a universal minimum for every display application.
If you are looking for a parts category, “Raspberry Pi touchscreen display kit” is a useful search phrase. Before choosing a specific kit, check current availability, the display interface, enclosure fit, and power compatibility. The tutorial supports the component categories, not a particular kit or price.

Alexa development is a separate kind of customization
Amazon’s Alexa Gadgets Toolkit resources include documentation, sample code, and a Raspberry Pi reference application written in Python 3 for prototyping gadgets that connect with Echo devices. That is for building a connected gadget, not a standalone smart-display operating system.
Likewise, Amazon’s Echo Spot developer article covers visual interactions in Alexa skills for display-enabled devices. A skill adds application-level behavior; it does not replace the Echo Spot’s system interface with an unrestricted launcher.
