A padlock beside a PlayStation game means there may be a license problem, but it does not identify the cause. First check which account owns access and what kind of entitlement the game uses; then verify the subscription or catalog availability, sharing settings, and console software. Restore licenses after those checks if the game is still locked.
What a padlock means
Sony says a padlock icon could mean there is a problem with the game’s license. Treat it as a symptom, not a diagnosis: the account, purchase, PlayStation Plus benefit, sharing settings, network, or console software may need attention. Sony’s license troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the entitlement and service status as well as restoring licenses.

Identify how you access the game
The correct check depends on whether you purchased the game, claimed it as a monthly game, downloaded it from a catalog, or access it through another user’s account.

Check the account, membership, and game availability
Use the account that owns the entitlement
Sign in to the account that bought or claimed the game. For a recent purchase or redemption, check that account’s transaction history to confirm the transaction succeeded. A game appearing on the console does not establish that the currently signed-in account has access to it.

Confirm the right Plus benefit
PlayStation Plus benefits are not interchangeable. Sony lists Game Catalog access for Extra and Premium, Classics Catalog access and cloud streaming for Premium, and monthly games as a separate benefit available during active membership. Check the current plan benefits and game listings. If it is a catalog title, confirm it is still offered; a past download does not guarantee ongoing catalog access.
For a shared game, check the owner’s console settings
If another account owns the game or membership, that owner should check whether sharing is enabled on the console you use. On PS5, review Console Sharing and Offline Play. On PS4, check whether the console is activated as the account’s primary PS4, as described in Sony’s sharing guidance. If the lock appears over the entire PS5 game image, ask the family manager to check parental-control settings.

Restore licenses on PS5 or PS4
Once you have confirmed the account and entitlement, restore licenses on the account that should have access. Sony says restoring licenses does not affect saved data or other data.
- PS5: Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, select the affected game if prompted, then choose Restore.
- PS4: Open Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses, then select Restore.
- When the process finishes, try launching the game again.

If the game is still unavailable
Check network and service status
Check PlayStation Network status. If Sony reports an outage or maintenance, wait until service is available and retry. For a matching PS5 license-verification error, Sony also recommends restarting the router and modem and trying again later.
Update and restart the console
Install the latest system software available for your console, then restart it and try again. Sony’s game-launch troubleshooting steps also include checking storage and deleting and redownloading a game if other steps fail.

Use Safe Mode only if simpler steps fail
If the account, entitlement, service, and license checks have not resolved the problem, follow Sony’s official Safe Mode instructions and consider rebuilding the database. Use the steps for your console model; do not choose reset or reinstall options unless you understand their data consequences.

PlayStation Store content varies by region, and an account’s country or region cannot be changed after account creation. Region matching is most relevant when a disc game and its add-on are involved: Sony says their regions must match. Do not assume region is the cause of a straightforward digital PlayStation Plus entitlement issue. See Sony’s add-on and region guidance.

Contact PlayStation Support with useful details
If the game remains locked after these checks, contact PlayStation Support. Include the exact error code or message, what happens when you try to launch the game, the steps that reproduce the issue, and a screenshot or video if available. This helps distinguish an entitlement problem from a console or service error.
