What is a ClickFix attack?
ClickFix is a social-engineering technique that persuades someone to execute attacker-supplied code, often by presenting it as a convenient fix or verification step. MITRE ATT&CK classifies the behavior as User Execution: Malicious Copy and Paste (T1204.004). It is not limited to Windows: MITRE lists Windows, macOS, and Linux among the technique’s platforms.
A typical attack begins with a phishing email, malicious advertisement, or compromised website. A convincing fake error, update, CAPTCHA, or other prompt tells the visitor to copy text and run it. The command may use an interpreter such as PowerShell or another legitimate system utility to retrieve or launch additional content. That content can lead to malware, information theft, remote access, or other attacker activity. Commands may be encoded or obfuscated, making them difficult to assess at a glance. Microsoft’s 2025 analysis describes observed payloads including infostealers, remote access tools, loaders, and rootkits; these are examples, not a complete list of current threats.
Because the person is made to initiate execution, ordinary protections aimed only at stopping a suspicious file download may not be enough. A command can also use built-in system tools, so not seeing an unfamiliar downloaded application does not prove nothing happened.

How to recognize a ClickFix lure
Watch for any webpage, email, pop-up, or support message that asks you to open a command interface or paste supplied text into it. Common targets on Windows include the Run dialog, Windows Terminal, Command Prompt, and PowerShell; macOS Terminal and other command interpreters can also be involved.
- A page asks you to copy and run text to complete a CAPTCHA, prove you are human, fix a browser error, install an update, or enable a missing feature.
- The instructions direct you to open Run, Terminal, PowerShell, or another command tool even though you were simply browsing or viewing a document.
- The supplied text is encoded, hard to understand, unusually long, split across lines, or appears to retrieve content from the internet.
- A fake error, verification check, update notice, or support message pressures you to act immediately.
- The page imitates a familiar company, browser, social platform, or CAPTCHA service. Microsoft has documented lures impersonating browser crash pages, Word Online, reCAPTCHA, Cloudflare Turnstile, and Discord. Familiar branding does not make a command safe.
Fake browser-update pages and CAPTCHA prompts were also documented in a 2024 alert from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center. Those examples describe campaign history, not a current list of indicators. See the HC3 sector alert on ClickFix attacks.

What to do if you see a ClickFix prompt
If you have not run the command
- Do not copy, paste, or execute it. Do not follow further instructions on the suspicious page.
- Close the page or message. If it arrived through work email or a work device, report it using your employer’s security channel.
- Verify the claimed problem independently. Type the service’s known address yourself or contact its support using a trusted route, rather than using links or contact details in the prompt.
If you already ran the command
- Contact your organization’s IT or security team promptly if the device or account is managed by your employer. Report that you ran a command from a webpage or message and follow the team’s instructions.
- Preserve useful details if safe. Note when you ran it and retain the page or message, visible command text, and any alerts. Do not continue interacting with the lure to gather evidence.
- Let responders investigate and contain the device. Relevant leads can include command-line and process activity, downloads or temporary-file changes, scheduled tasks or other persistence, and outbound network connections. The appropriate containment and recovery steps depend on the device and the organization’s incident-response procedures.
For a personal device, the cited threat guidance does not provide a complete home-user recovery procedure. Avoid running more commands or attempting improvised cleanup; seek help from a trusted security professional or the device maker’s support, and explain exactly what was run and when.
How organizations can reduce ClickFix risk
No single safeguard guarantees prevention. Microsoft reported that its Defender Experts observed thousands of devices per month with an executed ClickFix command in early 2025, including devices with endpoint detection and response (EDR) enabled. That is Microsoft’s observation, not an industry-wide rate. The practical response is layered prevention and detection.

1. Set a clear behavior rule
Train staff that websites and CAPTCHAs do not need users to run shell commands. Explain what safe copy-and-paste looks like and make reporting suspicious prompts easy. Awareness matters because the attack depends on a person following instructions that appear helpful.
2. Limit unnecessary execution paths
Where business requirements allow, restrict access to Run and command interpreters, and control the launching of native Windows binaries from Run. Use application control and consider PowerShell Constrained Language mode where appropriate. Test restrictions against legitimate workflows before deployment so that controls do not block necessary work.

3. Harden scripts and endpoints
Microsoft recommends PowerShell script-block logging and describes attack-surface-reduction rules for obfuscated scripts and scripts that download content. Keep endpoint protection current and configured to inspect script and process behavior, not only downloaded files.
4. Protect email, browsing, and network traffic
Use phishing and attachment protections, inspect links at click time where available, and apply web or network protections to block known malicious sites and downloads. Microsoft notes that blocking command-and-control domains before a first-stage payload is retrieved can disrupt an attack chain.

5. Correlate activity instead of relying on one alert
Investigate suspicious RunMRU data, encoded or obfuscated PowerShell, execution of living-off-the-land binaries (legitimate system tools used to carry out an attack), unexpected script downloads, temporary-file writes, scheduled tasks, and unusual outbound connections. MITRE’s detection guidance describes correlating user activity in a browser or email client with suspicious interpreter arguments, possible file creation, and an external connection. Treat any one alert as a lead and validate it against surrounding activity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to evaluate ClickFix controls
For an organization comparing safeguards, assess what part of the attack chain each control covers and what evidence it leaves for responders. A control may prevent an email from arriving, restrict user-launched execution, detect suspicious endpoint behavior, or block a network connection; these functions are complementary rather than interchangeable.
- Coverage: Which stages does it address—email, browser, user execution, endpoint, or network?
- Platform support: Does it cover the operating systems and devices your users actually use?
- Prevention and detection: Does it block an action, raise an alert, or both?
- Investigation: What command, process, file, and network telemetry is retained, and can analysts correlate it?
- Operational fit: What is required to deploy and maintain it, and could it interrupt legitimate work?
Microsoft’s ClickFix analysis and MITRE ATT&CK’s T1204.004 guidance provide further detail on observed behavior, detection, and mitigation.
