For a standard Windows 11 clean install, use an external USB flash drive to start Windows Setup, then select a compatible internal SSD as the place to install Windows. The USB installer and the Windows destination have different jobs. If by “install Windows on an external drive” you mean carrying a full Windows workspace on that drive, that is a separate scenario—not the standard Windows 11 installation method described here.

Can you install Windows 11 on an external drive?
First distinguish between two meanings. If you mean using an external USB drive to run Windows Setup, yes: create bootable installation media on the USB drive, boot the PC from it, and install Windows to the compatible internal SSD. Microsoft’s reinstallation guide describes choosing the installation location in Setup.
If you mean installing a full, portable Windows 11 system onto an ordinary external drive and booting from it as your everyday workspace, the standard installation instructions do not describe that as the normal Windows 11 path. The Windows To Go FAQ covers a separate Windows 10 Enterprise/Education feature and gives legacy requirements, including certified USB 3.0 drives and a recommended minimum drive size of 20 GB. Those details should not be treated as current Windows 11 guidance.
How to install Windows 11 to the internal SSD
- Back up files. A clean installation removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations and settings, according to Microsoft’s reinstall guide. Save anything you need before continuing.
- Create the installer USB. Use Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool with a blank USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. The process deletes the drive’s contents, so back it up first. Follow Microsoft’s Windows 11 download instructions.
- Boot the target PC from USB. Connect the installation media and use the PC’s boot menu or BIOS/UEFI boot-order settings if needed. The exact key and menu vary by manufacturer; consult the PC maker’s instructions. Microsoft notes that the PC may need its boot order changed.
- Select the internal SSD in Windows Setup. At the installation-location step, identify the compatible internal SSD. Check the disk carefully before deleting partitions or formatting; selecting the wrong disk can destroy data.
- Restore the normal boot order if you changed it. Otherwise, the PC may start the installer again instead of booting from the newly installed Windows system on the internal drive.
Check compatibility before choosing an SSD
Windows 11 lists at least 64 GB of available storage as a minimum, alongside a compatible 64-bit processor, at least 4 GB of memory, UEFI with Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. These are Windows requirements, not a guarantee that a particular SSD fits a particular computer. Check the PC manufacturer’s specifications for supported SSD form factor, interface and capacity limits before buying or replacing a drive. Microsoft warns that installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware can cause compatibility issues, may leave the PC unsupported, and does not guarantee updates. Which should you use?
- For a normal Windows 11 installation: use the external USB drive as temporary bootable installer media and install to the compatible internal SSD.
- For a portable full Windows workspace: do not assume an ordinary Windows 11 installer USB creates one. The available Microsoft Windows To Go documentation describes a legacy Windows 10 Enterprise/Education use case, not a standard Windows 11 workflow.
