Use your phone’s Focus or Do Not Disturb settings to let important people and apps through while silencing the rest. If app-checking is part of the problem, Android’s Digital Wellbeing Focus mode can also pause selected apps. Set exceptions before starting a quiet period, then test that calls and alerts you rely on still arrive.
Choose the right kind of control
Notification filters and app limits solve different problems. A Focus or Do Not Disturb mode controls which alerts can interrupt you. Scheduled delivery can move less urgent alerts to a chosen time. On supported Android phones, Digital Wellbeing Focus mode also pauses selected distracting apps so you cannot open them while it is active.
- Need to stay reachable: allow the people, conversations, and apps whose alerts matter, and silence other sources.
- Want fewer interruptions from low-priority apps: use scheduled delivery where available, or include those apps in a recurring quiet period.
- Keep opening distracting apps: on Android, consider pausing those apps with Digital Wellbeing Focus mode as well as filtering their notifications.
Apple and Google document these features and their controls, but do not quantify how much they improve attention or productivity. The best configuration depends on which alerts you need and how your phone handles exceptions.
Set up selective notifications on iPhone
Allow essential people and apps in Focus
- Open Settings > Focus.
- Choose a mode such as Work, Personal, or Do Not Disturb, or create a Focus for a specific situation.
- Open the mode’s people and apps settings. Allow the contacts and apps that should be able to notify you, or choose particular people and apps to silence.
- Review the options for repeat calls and time-sensitive notifications. Enable only the exceptions you want to interrupt the Focus.
- Set a schedule if you want the Focus to turn on automatically at particular times or in a recurring situation.
Apple documents these controls in its guide to allowing or silencing notifications for a Focus. Menu labels and the availability of newer intelligent notification features may differ by iOS version, device, language, and region; Apple notes availability limits for some Apple Intelligence features.

Deliver less urgent alerts in a summary
For apps whose notifications can wait, open Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary, select the apps to include, and choose delivery times. This gathers their notifications for delivery at those times rather than interrupting you individually as they arrive. You can also adjust an app’s notification settings, including preview visibility. See Apple’s iPhone notification settings guide for details.
Set up Do Not Disturb or another mode on Android
Filter interruptions by person, app, and alarm
- Open Settings > Modes, then choose Do Not Disturb or another mode. On some phones, the path or labels differ.
- Open Notification filters and choose what can interrupt you. Google documents filters for people—including calls, messages, or conversations—apps, and alarms or other interruptions.
- Review the repeat-caller setting. Google says it can allow a call through if the same person calls twice within 15 minutes.
- Set a schedule for recurring quiet periods, or turn the mode on from Quick Settings when needed.
- Before relying on the mode, check its filters and exceptions against the calls, messages, alarms, and other alerts you need to receive.
Google’s Android modes and Do Not Disturb guide explains the available controls. Google cautions that settings vary by phone, and some instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. Manufacturer software can change menu names and behavior.

Pause distracting apps with Digital Wellbeing
If notifications are only half the problem, open Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode, select the apps to pause, then turn Focus mode on or schedule it. While active, selected apps cannot be used and do not send notifications. A temporary break is available if you need to use one of the paused apps. Availability and wording vary by device. Google’s Digital Wellbeing guide describes the feature.
Check that important alerts still get through
Do not assume a general silence setting preserves every alert you care about. Make a short list of essential contacts, apps, alarms, and time-sensitive notifications, then check each one in the mode’s filters. Apple documents repeat-call handling and time-sensitive notifications as Focus options; Google documents an option to allow a call from the same person after two calls within 15 minutes. These exceptions work differently, and their availability or configuration can depend on the device.

- Calls and messages: confirm which people, conversations, or repeat calls are allowed.
- Work or safety apps: allow any app whose alert needs immediate attention; otherwise, consider putting it in a scheduled summary or quiet period.
- Alarms and other interruptions: inspect the relevant filters rather than assuming all alarms or system notices behave alike.
- Time-sensitive alerts: check whether the option exists and whether you want it enabled for the Focus you use.
Test the configuration at a low-stakes time. Ask an allowed contact to call or message, and check how a notification from a silenced app is handled. Adjust the allow-list or exceptions if the result does not match what you need. For general Android notification controls beyond modes, see Google’s Android notification guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a simple routine around the settings
- Choose a quiet window: decide when you need uninterrupted time, rather than silencing alerts indefinitely.
- Allow only the necessary exceptions: start with people and apps that genuinely need to reach you during that window.
- Batch what can wait: use Scheduled Summary on iPhone or a recurring mode schedule to reduce immediate interruptions.
- Block app access if needed: on Android, add distracting apps to Digital Wellbeing Focus mode when notification filtering alone is not enough.
- Review after use: if an important alert was missed, adjust the specific filter or exception instead of turning every notification back on.
The exact controls differ by platform, Android manufacturer, operating-system version, and sometimes region or language. Treat the device’s current settings screen as authoritative if a menu path in a support page does not match your phone.
