The Rust compiler settings that most directly affect LLVM optimization are -C opt-level, -C codegen-units, and -C lto. CPU-target settings such as -C target-cpu and -C target-feature shape which instructions LLVM may use. These controls trade off runtime performance, build time, binary size, portability, and debuggability; no combination guarantees that a particular program will run faster.

Start with the Cargo profile and compiler version

In a Cargo project, profile settings determine how compiler options are applied during ordinary builds. Before changing flags, check the compiler and target you are actually using:

  • rustc -Vv reports the compiler version and host target.
  • rustc -C help lists codegen options supported by that installed compiler.
  • Check the active Cargo profile and build target; CPU and feature support can vary by target and toolchain.

The Rust Project’s rustc codegen options reference describes option behavior, not performance results for your application. Treat changes as hypotheses to benchmark with representative workloads, and record clean build time, incremental build time, link time, artifact size, and runtime behavior.

Choose an optimization level with -C opt-level

-C opt-level is the main setting for selecting the compiler’s optimization mode. The documented values are:

Value Documented intent What to keep in mind
0 No optimizations; default Useful for fast development builds, but not a production performance target by itself.
1 Basic optimizations A middle ground to test when compile time matters.
2 Some optimizations Compare against other levels on your workload.
3 All optimizations Not a guarantee of faster execution than lower levels.
s Optimize for binary size Measure both artifact size and runtime behavior.
z More aggressive size optimization It can sometimes produce a larger binary than s.

-O is an alias for -C opt-level=3. The level names are compiler modes, not promised speedups. Optimization level also affects debug assertions: they are enabled automatically only when opt-level is 0, unless explicitly controlled.

Balance parallel compilation and code quality with -C codegen-units

-C codegen-units sets the maximum number of units into which a crate is divided for code generation. More units allow LLVM to work in parallel and may reduce compile time, but can result in slower generated code. Using one unit may improve generated-code performance while taking longer to compile.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The rustc book documents defaults of 16 codegen units for non-incremental builds and 256 for incremental builds. These are compiler defaults, not performance recommendations. Test the setting alongside your profile and build workflow; its effect on compilation and runtime depends on the project.

Understand what LTO changes

Link-time optimization lets LLVM analyze and optimize code across crate boundaries, potentially enabling optimizations that are not available when crates are handled separately. It can increase link time, so measure the full build rather than only compilation.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Fat LTO: operates across crates in the dependency graph.
  • Thin LTO: is substantially faster than fat LTO while achieving similar performance gains in the rustc book’s general comparison; this is not a guarantee for a particular application.
  • Implicit local LTO: without an explicit -C lto, rustc may use thin local LTO within the local crate across codegen units. This implicit behavior is disabled when codegen-units=1 or opt-level=0.

LTO is therefore a change in optimization scope, not a universal “make faster” switch. Compare runtime, link time, and total build time for your project.

Use incremental compilation for iteration, not as a release shortcut

-C incremental saves information that can be reused when recompiling, improving recompile times during development. The rustc book warns that incremental compilation inhibits some optimizations, including by increasing codegen units, and does not recommend it for release builds. Cargo profile configuration is the usual way to distinguish developer iteration from production builds.

Set the target CPU and features with portability in mind

-C target-cpu tells rustc to generate code for a particular processor. native selects the processor of the machine doing the build; generic means a minimal-feature modern LLVM target. A binary built with native may use instructions unavailable on other machines, so it is not automatically portable across a deployment fleet.

-C target-feature explicitly enables or disables supported features using forms such as +feature and -feature. Defaults depend on the target and CPU. The Rust Reference’s code-generation documentation describes target features and platform-specific standard-library macros for runtime feature detection.

This is also a correctness issue. The rustc known-issues page warns that setting target features for a crate does not automatically rebuild the standard library and imported crates with those same features. It recommends using a common feature set across code to avoid undefined behavior; mismatches can also cause ABI problems. Avoid enabling features globally unless the whole relevant crate graph and deployment CPUs support the choice. For runtime-selected CPU-specific code, use supported runtime detection and carefully isolated feature-specific functions.

Reserve direct LLVM controls for targeted experiments

The options -C no-vectorize-loops and -C no-vectorize-slp disable LLVM loop and SLP vectorization, respectively. The compiler also accepts LLVM arguments through -C llvm-args and allows adding passes with -C passes. These are advanced controls: direct LLVM interfaces do not have rustc’s usual command-line stability guarantees. Validate them against the exact compiler version and workload rather than making them routine project defaults.

Separate optimization from debugging and runtime controls

Some compiler options affect the final artifact or runtime without simply selecting a stronger LLVM optimization level:

  • -C debuginfo controls emitted debugging information.
  • -C strip removes debug information or symbols at link time. Depending on the setting and platform, that can impair debugger use, backtraces, profiling, or crash reporting. Stripping is not meaningful security or obfuscation.
  • -C panic selects panic behavior subject to target and crate-graph constraints.

Decide how much diagnostic information to retain based on operational needs; a smaller artifact may be less useful when diagnosing a production failure.

A practical way to compare configurations

  1. Set a baseline. Use the project’s current Cargo profile and confirm the compiler version, target, and active flags.
  2. Change one related setting at a time. For example, compare optimization levels first, then test codegen-unit count or LTO without changing CPU compatibility at the same time.
  3. Measure representative work. Record runtime results for the workload that matters, along with clean and incremental build times, link time, and artifact size.
  4. Test deployment compatibility. Confirm that the selected CPU features are supported across intended machines and consistently handled across relevant dependencies.
  5. Preserve diagnostics where needed. Check that debug information and symbols match your profiling, crash-reporting, and debugging requirements.
  6. Recheck after toolchain changes. Especially for LLVM-specific flags and target-dependent options, verify behavior with the compiler version you plan to ship.

For many projects, the useful comparison is between a normal development profile and a release profile, followed by targeted tests of size-oriented optimization, LTO, fewer codegen units, or CPU-specific compilation where the deployment environment permits them. Let measured results—not the apparent strength of a flag name—decide.
