If numbers replace letters on a laptop, check Num Lock. If one keypress produces several characters, check key-repeat settings. These symptoms point to different settings, so identify what the keyboard is doing before assuming it is broken.
Start by identifying the wrong-character pattern
Note which keys are affected and what appears instead. Does every key behave unexpectedly, or only punctuation? Do you see a different letter, a symbol, an accent, or a number? Does it happen in more than one app? Did it begin after changing language settings, connecting another keyboard, or pressing a shortcut? The answers help distinguish a layout mismatch from Num Lock, repeat settings, or an issue limited to a particular app or session.
If letters or punctuation consistently produce different characters
Check the selected keyboard layout or input method first. The operating system’s selected layout determines what a key enters; it does not have to match the markings on the physical keyboard. Changing the keyboard layout does not itself change Windows’ display language.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Look at the input-language indicator in the taskbar, or press Windows+Space to cycle through installed keyboard layouts and check whether the intended one fixes the mapping.
- To inspect or change installed layouts, open Settings > Time & language > Language & region. Open the options for the relevant language to view its keyboard layouts.
- Select the intended layout. If an unintended layout is installed and you do not need it, remove it from that language’s options to reduce the chance of switching to it accidentally.
Microsoft documents these layout controls and switching steps for Windows 10 and Windows 11 at Manage the language and keyboard/input layout settings in Windows. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; consult Microsoft’s current support information for your edition.

Chromebook
- Open Settings > Device > Keyboard > Change input settings.
- Review the enabled input methods and select the one you intend to use.
- To see the current language code on the shelf, turn on Show input options in the shelf.
On Chromebook, Ctrl+Shift+Space cycles to another language and Ctrl+Space switches back. Google lists these controls and explains special-character input in Choose keyboard language & special characters.
If numbers or symbols replace letters on a laptop
Check whether Num Lock is active. Some laptops have an embedded numeric keypad layered over part of the letter-key area; when it is active, those keys can enter numbers or symbols instead of letters. Look for a Num Lock key or a Num Lock marking on another key. The toggle may require a model-specific Fn combination, so use the laptop’s markings or manufacturer instructions rather than assuming one shortcut works on all devices.

The keyboard language is controlled by the operating system and can differ from the physical layout. HP discusses both layout differences and Num Lock in HP Notebook PCs – Incorrect characters are displayed when using the keyboard.
If one keypress produces multiple characters
Repeated characters are a different symptom from a key consistently mapping to the wrong letter or symbol. On Chromebook, ASUS recommends adjusting the key-repeat delay and repeat rate when a single press produces two or more characters. Review those repeat settings in Chromebook keyboard settings; the cited ASUS guidance is specific to Chromebook and should not be treated as a universal Windows or Mac path. If the output is an accent or special character
An input method may intentionally support accents and alternate characters. For example, Chromebook’s US International layout supports accent input, including dead-key behavior and AltGr combinations. If you see an accent or alternate character, check the selected input method before treating it as a keyboard fault. Google’s keyboard language and special characters guide describes these behaviors.
If a Chromebook keyboard problem persists
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Test the keys while browsing as a guest. If the behavior changes, that can help indicate whether the issue is tied to your account or session; it does not by itself identify every possible keyboard fault.
- Run ChromeOS Diagnostics.
- If the issue continues, contact the Chromebook manufacturer.
Google provides these troubleshooting steps in Use your Chromebook keyboard.

If the settings checks do not solve it
Before seeking model-specific help, record the device model, operating system, affected keys, whether the issue occurs in multiple apps, and whether an external keyboard behaves the same way. Those details help narrow down what to investigate. The steps above do not establish a universal hardware-repair sequence, so avoid replacing a keyboard solely because its output is unexpected.
