What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
First identify what “missing” means: a type may have been renamed, code or reflection metadata may have been removed, a serializer may no longer find a member, or a transformed function may be failing at runtime. The fix depends on the obfuscator and access pattern. Reproduce the problem with the same inputs and runtime in both the un-obfuscated and obfuscated builds, then keep or exempt only the affected symbols rather than turning off protection across the whole application.
Diagnose what is actually missing
Obfuscation can rename identifiers; shrinking can remove code that static analysis considers unused; and optimization or metadata stripping can change what is available at runtime. A failure limited to the obfuscated build is a clue, not proof that a type or property was deleted. Reflection, serializers, framework conventions, and JavaScript property access across files can rely on names or metadata that the tool cannot infer from ordinary call sites.
- Reproduce the failure. Run the un-obfuscated and obfuscated builds with the same inputs and runtime. Record the exact exception or failed lookup, obfuscator and version, build configuration, runtime/browser/OS, and the smallest input that triggers it.
- Classify the failure. Is it compile-time type resolution, class loading, reflection lookup, JSON/XML serialization, a JavaScript property returning
undefined, or an unreadable stack trace? These point to different causes and fixes. - Isolate the transformation. Temporarily disable the relevant renaming, shrinking, or optimization option and rebuild. If the failure disappears, restore protection after diagnosis and narrow the change to the affected class, member, metadata, or property name.
- Verify the fix in the obfuscated artifact. Test the dynamic paths involved—such as reflection, serialization, plugin loading, or cross-file property access—and check that protection still applies to unrelated code.
Keep the original source and build configuration. Obfuscated output is not a dependable way to recover original names or formatting.
Choose a fix for the obfuscator you use
| Tool family | Likely issue to investigate | Narrow fix to consider | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| .NET with Obfuscar | A reflected type or property was renamed, or generated artifacts are affected. | Targeted SkipType or SkipProperty settings; where appropriate, SkipSpecialName or SkipGenerated. |
These are Obfuscar controls, not portable rules for other tools. See Obfuscar configuration. |
| Android with R8 | Shrinking removed dynamically accessed code, or reflection-required metadata is absent. | Keep the specific class or member and only the metadata the reflection path consumes. | R8 rules and attributes differ from identifier-reservation settings in JavaScript tools. See Android keep-rule examples. |
| JavaScript with Obfuscator.io | A property was renamed, especially when its name is shared across files; alternatively, a VM-transformed function fails at runtime. | Use a shared identifier-name cache, reserve or exclude affected identifiers, or disable property renaming for the build. For VM errors, isolate the function and check target compatibility. | Property renaming and VM/self-defending options are specific to this tool and its selected mode. See the options reference and runtime troubleshooting. |
Fix .NET and Obfuscar reflection or serialization failures
Keep only the affected type or property
If code finds a type or property by a string name, ordinary static analysis may not reveal that dependency. In Obfuscar, use a targeted SkipType or SkipProperty setting for the symbol that must retain its name. Obfuscar documents that skipping a property also skips its accessors. Its inclusion and exclusion priority is, from highest to lower: item attributes, force/inclusion rules, skip/exclusion rules, then general public/private settings. Check the configuration documentation for the syntax and behavior supported by the version you run.

Check generated artifacts and attributes
Async and iterator state machines, anonymous types, and lambda closures can be affected by transformations in ways that are hard to diagnose from source-level names. Obfuscar recommends considering SkipSpecialName and SkipGenerated when runtime or reflection issues involve language-generated types. Apply these controls only when the affected code calls for them; they can reduce how much is obfuscated.
.NET code can also use ObfuscationAttribute as an exclusion control on a type or member. Microsoft documents Exclude as that control, but whether the attribute remains available and how it is interpreted depends on the attribute settings and the obfuscator. Check the behavior of your specific tool rather than assuming the attribute alone guarantees an exclusion. See Microsoft’s ObfuscationAttribute reference.

Handle XmlSerializer name collisions
If XmlSerializer reports duplicate names after obfuscation, check whether obfuscated type or member names are being reused across assemblies. Obfuscar documents specifying XML names and setting ReuseNames to false as a workaround for duplicate obfuscated names. Confirm the resulting XML contract with serialization tests.
Fix Android reflection failures after R8
Keep the dynamically accessed element
When reflection, a framework convention, or a library looks up a class, constructor, or field dynamically, add a narrowly scoped keep rule for the element that lookup requires. The correct rule depends on the library version and how it accesses the code; check whether that library already supplies consumer keep rules before adding your own. Android’s keep-rule examples show patterns for reflection-based libraries.

Retain only metadata reflection consumes
A class can survive while metadata needed to interpret it does not. Android Developers notes that attributes such as Signature may be required for reflection. A custom configuration that replaces the default optimized rules can change which attributes are retained, so check the effective configuration and preserve only the attributes your runtime path uses. R8 full mode can also remove generic signatures, constructors, or non-annotated fields when static analysis cannot see their dynamic use. See Android’s global options guidance.
Use -dontoptimize, -dontshrink, or -dontobfuscate only temporarily to isolate the cause. Android Developers says: “You should only use the options -dontoptimize, -dontshrink, and -dontobfuscate temporarily during debugging or development.” Do not ship a broad debug-only disable as the repair.

Fix JavaScript property renaming or VM runtime errors
Preserve names used across files
Check whether renameProperties is enabled and whether the same property name is consumed in separate files or by code the obfuscator cannot analyze. Obfuscator.io warns that property renaming “MAY break your code.” When names must remain consistent across files, its identifierNamesCache can preserve that consistency. Otherwise, reserve or exclude the required identifiers, or disable property renaming for the affected build. The options reference describes the available controls; confirm their defaults and behavior for your installed version and selected mode.
Investigate errors from VM transformation separately
A missing property and a runtime exception from virtualized code are not necessarily the same problem. For errors such as Invalid array length, Obfuscator.io identifies a mismatch between the target option and the actual execution environment, combined with vmSelfDefending: true, as its most common cause within that VM/self-defending setup. Confirm the target matches the browser or runtime where the code executes. Then, as a diagnostic, disable self-defending temporarily and virtualize one function at a time rather than changing many settings together.

If the issue persists, use Obfuscator.io’s runtime troubleshooting guidance: retain the exact stack trace, complete options, tool version, runtime environment, and a minimal reproduction. Narrow the problem to one function before escalating it.
Quick Recap
Confirm the repair without over-disabling protection
- Build and run the same production-like obfuscated artifact that exposed the failure.
- Exercise the specific dynamic path: reflection lookup, serialization, plugin loading, or JavaScript property access across files.
- Check that the required name or metadata remains available and that unrelated types and properties are still transformed as intended.
- Record the tool version and the smallest rule or option change that fixes the failure, so future configuration or library updates can be checked against it.
