If deserialization works in a debug build but fails in a minified Android release, R8 may have removed or renamed something your code accesses only through reflection. In the Gson case, the usual causes are a missing class, constructor, field, or generic type signature—or JSON field names that changed when Java fields were obfuscated. Find which runtime contract broke, then preserve only what it needs and test the transformed release build.

Why does reflection work in debug but fail after obfuscation?

In an ordinary call, code refers to a class or member directly, so a shrinker can trace the dependency. Reflection can make the same dependency invisible: an application may load a class from a string, inspect a field at runtime, or invoke a constructor without a direct reference. R8 may then treat that class or member as unused and remove it. Its keep-rule documentation explains that classes loaded by name strings cannot be detected through ordinary static analysis.

Release processing can make several distinct changes. Shrinking removes code judged unused; obfuscation renames classes and members; optimization can alter code based on assumptions that do not account for reflective use. A failure may therefore mean that a type vanished, a member was renamed, a constructor or metadata was stripped, or two names now collide. Diagnose the specific failure before adding rules.

How can obfuscation change serialized JSON?

Field names inferred by Gson

If Gson derives a JSON key from a Java field name, renaming that field can change the key written to or expected from JSON. That breaks compatibility with stored data, an API, or another application even if the model class itself remains present.

Gson’s @SerializedName annotation gives a field an explicit JSON name independent of its Java identifier. For example, @SerializedName("user_id") establishes user_id as the JSON key even if R8 renames the field. The annotated member still needs to be available at runtime. Android’s Gson and R8 guidance notes that Gson 2.11.0 and later bundle rules for TypeToken and @SerializedName fields; that does not establish that every application model or reflective use is covered.

Removed members, constructors, or generic metadata

Gson relies heavily on reflection. Android’s guidance warns that R8 full mode can strip generic Signature metadata, default constructors, and non-annotated fields unless the configuration preserves what the application needs. A missing signature can affect generic type handling; a missing constructor or field can disrupt reflective creation or field mapping.

Do not paste a rule from a different project without checking the Gson version, R8 mode, and actual reflection pattern. A rule that is necessary for one model or type token may be redundant—or too broad—for another.

Duplicate names in a class hierarchy

Renaming can also cause a less obvious Gson error: two private fields in a class hierarchy may be renamed to the same name, leading Gson to report java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: class <class name> declares multiple JSON fields named <name>. The R8 compatibility FAQ documents this case. Assign distinct @SerializedName values to the serialized fields and preserve the relevant members according to the documented rule for that pattern.

How should you choose a keep rule?

Start with the runtime contract, not a blanket instruction to keep everything. Write down what the application or library looks up reflectively: class names, constructors, fields, methods, and generic type information. Then use the Android keep-rule syntax to protect those elements. Rules can target a class or selected members, and modifiers such as allowobfuscation or allowshrinking can permit transformations where names or reachability do not matter.

  • Class found by a runtime string: preserve the class and any constructor or members that the lookup needs.
  • JSON key must stay stable: use explicit serialized names and ensure the annotated fields remain available.
  • Generic type inspected at runtime: preserve the required signature metadata and the relevant type-token structure.
  • Reflective library behavior: check whether the library supplies consumer rules, then determine whether your app’s models or additional use cases need rules of their own.

Android cautions against broad rules that keep every member because they block optimization opportunities. Library consumer rules and app-specific rules also serve different purposes: a library can supply rules for its own implementation, while app configuration must cover application-specific reflective contracts.

How do you verify the fix in a release build?

  1. Reproduce the failure in the transformed variant. Run the release variant with minification enabled, and record the R8/Android Gradle Plugin and Gson versions plus the configuration used.
  2. Find the first broken lookup or field. Check the exception and affected model, then inspect the generated mapping and shrinker reports when available. Determine whether the problem is removal, renaming, missing metadata, or a collision.
  3. Make the narrowest correction. Add a targeted keep rule, give serialized fields stable names, or replace reflection for the affected type with an explicit adapter or another suitable approach.
  4. Test representative data on the transformed build. Exercise serialization and deserialization for the nested, generic, and inherited models your application actually uses.
  5. Check the contract and rule scope. Confirm that JSON output retains the expected keys and that the rule has not unnecessarily preserved unrelated code.

Gson’s troubleshooting guide specifically advises testing minified use. A successful debug test alone does not exercise the transformations that can expose reflection-dependent assumptions.

When should you use an alternative to reflection?

Gson’s project documentation says its open-ended reflection does not work well with the shrinking, optimization, and obfuscation passes Android release apps should perform. It describes minified use as possible with care, but recommends considering alternatives such as explicit TypeAdapter or TypeAdapterFactory implementations, or Gson’s JSON tree and streaming APIs. Android users may also consider a code-generation-based library.

These are architectural choices, not automatic drop-in fixes. Compare the amount of runtime reflection, how stable JSON names are, the project’s language features, rule maintenance and release-test burden, and runtime or binary-size constraints. Gson’s project page also warns that Kotlin-specific features such as non-null types and default constructor arguments are not supported, and advises users of non-Java JVM languages to prefer libraries with explicit language support. Verify compatibility for the chosen library and model patterns rather than assuming behavior is the same across serializers or languages.
