As of October 4, 2026, GitHub Actions no longer provides Node 20 for JavaScript actions. Those actions now run on Node 24, and the temporary opt-out has ended. Workflow users should move to action releases that support Node 24; action maintainers should set runs.using to node24 and publish a compatible release. Before relying on Node 24, check self-hosted runner compatibility: macOS 13.4 and earlier are incompatible, and ARM32 is not officially supported.
What changed, and when?
GitHub’s final notice says that on September 23, 2026, Node 20 became unavailable on GitHub Actions runners and JavaScript actions began running on Node 24. The temporary ACTIONS_ALLOW_USE_UNSECURE_NODE_VERSION opt-out ended at the same time. GitHub’s earlier migration announcement had its schedule revised; the final notice, rather than the earlier planned dates, describes the current state.

What should workflow users change?
- Find each JavaScript action referenced in your workflow files, including actions called by reusable workflows maintained in other repositories.
- Check the action’s release notes or documentation and update references to a release that supports Node 24. If a workflow pins a version tag or commit, update that reference deliberately rather than assuming it will move automatically.
- Run the affected workflow and inspect any failure against the specific action release and runner operating system or architecture. Do not start by changing the project’s Node.js version: that setting does not change an action’s declared runtime.
GitHub’s final migration notice directs users to use the latest action versions that support Node 24. Updating a workflow reference is necessary when it points to an older incompatible release; changing an action’s source code without publishing a release does not update consumers.
How do action maintainers upgrade to Node 24?
- In the action’s
action.ymloraction.yamlmetadata, setruns.usingtonode24. GitHub’s metadata syntax reference defines this field as the runtime for the action code, including itsmain,pre, andpostscripts. - Check dependencies and bundled code for Node 24 compatibility, as well as compatibility with the operating systems and architectures the action claims to support.
- Publish a new compatible release and tell workflow users which version to adopt. A metadata edit in an unreleased branch does not change existing workflow references.
GitHub’s guidance on custom actions recommends packaged pure JavaScript without reliance on other binaries for compatibility across hosted Ubuntu, Windows, and macOS runners. That is general compatibility guidance, not a guarantee that every action or dependency will work unchanged on every environment.

Do I need to change actions/setup-node too?
Not just because the action runtime changed. runs.using chooses the Node.js runtime that executes a packaged JavaScript action. By contrast, actions/setup-node installs or selects a Node.js version for your project’s workflow commands, such as build and test scripts. Changing node-version in setup-node does not change an action’s runs.using declaration.
For consistent project Node.js behavior across runners, GitHub recommends using setup-node. On a self-hosted runner, the needed project Node.js version must be installed and available on PATH.

Will Node 24 work on a self-hosted runner?
Check the runner’s operating system and architecture. GitHub’s final notice states that Node 24 is incompatible with macOS 13.4 and earlier and does not officially support ARM32. Self-hosted runners using those environments are not supported for this runtime change.
Also keep the runner application current. GitHub says Actions features may require runner updates. If automatic updates are disabled, the self-hosted runner reference requires updating within 30 days of an available runner update or the service will stop queuing jobs. GitHub may pause jobs for critical security updates until they are applied. This runner-software maintenance requirement is separate from an action’s Node.js runtime metadata.

Can I keep using Node 20?
No. GitHub’s September 23, 2026 notice says Node 20 is no longer available on Actions runners, and the temporary ACTIONS_ALLOW_USE_UNSECURE_NODE_VERSION setting is no longer an opt-out. The practical path is to use a compatible Node 24 action release, or, if you maintain the action, upgrade and publish one.
