What changed, and who is affected?
GitHub’s final notice, published September 23, 2026, says Node 20 is no longer available on GitHub Actions runners and JavaScript actions now use Node 24. The temporary ACTIONS_ALLOW_USE_UNSECURE_NODE_VERSION opt-out is no longer available. The announcement covers GitHub.com and GitHub with Data Residency; it does not establish the same schedule for GitHub Enterprise Server. Read GitHub’s Node 20 removal notice.
GitHub says the newest versions of its first-party actions were updated, but that does not establish that every third-party action has a Node 24-compatible release. Compatibility depends on the exact release you use.
How do I know which version of an action supports Node 24?
Check the action metadata at the exact release or commit referenced by your workflow. For a JavaScript action, the runs.using field declares the runtime used to execute its entry point, commonly specified as main. Look for runs.using: node24. GitHub’s metadata reference documents this field and distinguishes JavaScript actions from composite and Docker actions. See the metadata syntax reference.

- Find workflow references written as
uses: owner/repository@ref. Also check reusable action references in composite action manifests that your repository maintains. - Identify the exact ref used for each action. Open that release or commit in the action’s source repository and inspect its
action.ymloraction.yaml. - If it is a JavaScript action, check whether
runs.usingisnode24. Do not infer compatibility from the tag’s age or README wording alone. - If the current release declares
node20, find a newer release and inspect that release’s metadata. Review its release notes, inputs, and outputs before upgrading; a runtime update does not guarantee that the release is otherwise interchangeable. - Update the workflow reference, then run the workflow and investigate warnings or failures. Exercise relevant paths on your actual runner operating systems and architectures.
A composite action does not declare a JavaScript runtime in the same way; inspect the action type and its steps. A Docker action uses a container image rather than the JavaScript action runtime field. GitHub’s metadata reference describes these action types.
Does actions/setup-node make an action use Node 24?
No. actions/setup-node installs or selects Node for your workflow’s project commands, such as build and test steps. It does not change the runtime declared by another action’s runs.using metadata. To change a JavaScript action’s runtime, use a release whose own metadata declares node24.

For example, this is a project-runtime setup step, separate from the runtime used to execute actions:

node-version: 24Use the project version your application requires; setting it to 24 is not itself a migration of other actions. GitHub’s metadata documentation defines an action’s runtime, while its setup-node examples show Node being set up for workflow commands.

Should I pin an action to a SHA or a version tag?
Choose the reference based on whether your priority is immutable execution or convenient updates. GitHub describes a full-length commit SHA as its safest stability and security option and the only way to use an action as an immutable release. See GitHub’s secure-use guidance.

GitHub’s action reference guidance discusses SHA, major-version, and branch references. A pin does not remove the need to check which release you chose: confirm the metadata at the corresponding commit or release, and retain an update and review process appropriate to your threat model.

What should self-hosted runner users check?
GitHub notes that Node 24 is incompatible with macOS 13.4 and earlier and has no official ARM32 support. If your self-hosted runners use those platforms or architectures, check runner compatibility before relying on Node 24 JavaScript actions. The limitation is specific to those environments; do not assume all self-hosted runners are affected. GitHub’s removal notice lists these constraints.

Why does my workflow say Node 20 is deprecated or unavailable?
The action version referenced by the workflow may still declare runs.using: node20. Find that exact release, inspect its manifest, and move to a compatible release that declares node24. Changing the project’s node-version input to actions/setup-node will not change that action’s declared runtime. If no compatible release is available, consult the action maintainer’s release information and consider whether you can replace or maintain the action; Node 20 cannot be restored through the former opt-out.
