Stealth helicopters reduce radar detection by lowering their radar cross section (RCS)—the strength of the signal reflected back toward a radar. Designs such as the RAH-66 Comanche combined airframe shaping, radar-absorbent materials, and stowed equipment to limit that return. These measures make an aircraft less observable to radar, not invisible.
What radar cross section means
A radar sends out radio waves and listens for energy reflected back from objects. Radar cross section describes how strong an object’s return appears to the radar; it is not simply the aircraft’s physical size. A low-RCS design aims to return less energy to the receiver, making detection more difficult under some conditions.
DARPA describes stealth as a combination of measures, including shaping to minimize radar-return spikes and radar-absorbent materials. Its overview also notes that stealth techniques have been applied to different kinds of weapon systems, including helicopters: DARPA’s overview of Have Blue and stealth technology.
How helicopter design reduces radar returns
Shape surfaces to direct energy away
Airframe shaping can reduce strong reflections by directing more radar energy away from the source rather than straight back toward the receiver. The Sikorsky historical archive identifies fuselage shaping as one element of the RAH-66 Comanche’s low-signature design. Shaping is not a guarantee that no radar energy returns; it is one part of reducing the aircraft’s radar cross section.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use radar-absorbent materials
Radar-absorbent materials are intended to absorb some radar energy rather than reflect all of it back. DARPA and Sikorsky both identify these materials as part of stealth design and the Comanche’s low-signature approach. The sources do not establish that all incoming radar energy is absorbed, or that an ordinary coating could reproduce an aircraft’s integrated design.
Keep equipment and cavities from protruding
Exposed equipment and openings can contribute to radar returns. The Comanche was designed with retractable landing gear and a weapons pylon; Sikorsky’s archive describes its armament and landing gear as located within the fuselage. Stowing these elements helps limit the exposed shapes that form part of an aircraft’s radar signature. The U.S. Department of Defense’s historical FY2001 DOT&E report on the RAH-66 describes these intended low-RCS features.

Combine methods across the airframe
There is no single “stealth paint” feature that accounts for a helicopter’s radar observability. Shaping, materials, and equipment placement address different contributors to radar return, so low-observable design is an integrated airframe problem. The public descriptions of the Comanche identify several such features rather than a single fix.
Radar stealth is not the same as being undetectable
Radar is only one way to detect an aircraft. Army-related sources distinguish radar, visual, acoustic, and infrared signatures. The DOT&E report discusses Comanche heat management as an infrared measure and rotor configuration as an acoustic measure, separately from the low-RCS airframe features. Lower noise or heat does not prove lower radar visibility, and reducing radar returns does not erase other signatures.

Descriptions of the RAH-66 establish design goals and features, not a measured operational detection distance or exact RCS. The public DOT&E report and Sikorsky historical archive do not provide a defensible detection range or a numerical comparison with another helicopter. A range or RCS figure without a stated test setup, radar characteristics, and operating conditions would be misleading.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the RAH-66 Comanche is a useful example
The Comanche is a documented example of an intended low-observable helicopter design: sources describe shaped fuselage surfaces, radar-absorbing materials, and equipment such as landing gear and armament positioned or retracted to reduce exposure. The Department of Defense program description and Sikorsky’s archive entry support those design features, but do not establish a specific measured RCS or prove that the aircraft could not be detected.
