GitHub Actions completed its Node 20-to-Node 24 runtime transition on September 23, 2026: Node 20 is no longer available on GitHub-hosted runners, JavaScript actions use Node 24, and the temporary opt-out is unavailable. What you need to change depends on whether you maintain an action, use one in a workflow, or need Node 24 for the workflow’s own commands.
First, identify which Node version you need to change
There are two separate Node settings in a GitHub Actions project. An action’s runs.using field selects the runtime for that JavaScript action. The node-version input to actions/setup-node installs Node for commands run by your workflow. Updating one does not update the other.
| Your role or need | What to change | Who makes the change |
|---|---|---|
| You maintain a JavaScript action | Set runs.using to node24, validate the action, and publish a release. |
The action maintainer. |
| You use an action maintained elsewhere | Update the workflow’s uses: reference to a release that supports Node 24. |
The workflow owner, using a release published by the action maintainer. |
| Your own job commands need Node 24 | Set node-version: '24' in actions/setup-node. |
The workflow owner. |
GitHub says its newest first-party action versions have been updated to Node 24, but third-party compatibility depends on each maintainer’s release. See GitHub’s September 23, 2026 runtime-transition notice.
If you maintain a JavaScript action, change its runtime metadata
In the action’s action.yml or action.yaml file, change runs.using from node20 to node24. Keep the current entry point if it remains correct; the runtime declaration is the relevant setting.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
runs:
using: node24
main: dist/index.js
If the metadata also declares pre or post scripts, they use the runtime selected by runs.using as well. Review each entry point and the dependencies included in the packaged action, not just the YAML change. GitHub’s action metadata reference documents the JavaScript runtime field, and its JavaScript action guide covers bundling dependencies and testing.
After updating and validating the action, publish a new release and tell users which release or tag contains the change. Editing the default branch alone does not give consumers a new release to select. Do not assume a particular third-party action is compatible unless its release information or metadata confirms it.

If you use someone else’s action, update the workflow reference
Review the uses: entries in workflow files and reusable workflows, then select a release whose maintainer indicates Node 24 support. Follow your repository’s version-pinning policy; there is no single version number that applies to every action.
steps:
- uses: owner/action@<compatible-release>
Replace the illustrative release text with the actual compatible tag or version for that action. Check its release notes or metadata rather than changing runs.using in a repository you do not maintain. For GitHub-maintained actions, start with the current release information; for third-party actions, compatibility is specific to that project’s release.

Use setup-node only for the workflow’s own Node commands
If your build, tests, or scripts executed directly by the job need Node 24, configure actions/setup-node separately:
- uses: actions/setup-node@v7
with:
node-version: '24'
This follows GitHub’s Node.js workflow example. The input installs Node for the job’s commands; it does not select the runtime used to execute a JavaScript action. That runtime comes from the action’s runs.using metadata and the runner’s supported runtime.

Check the runner before troubleshooting the migration
GitHub’s September 23, 2026 notice says Node 24 is incompatible with macOS 13.4 and earlier and does not officially support ARM32. If a self-hosted runner uses one of those environments or architectures, move it to an environment supported by Node 24 for JavaScript actions. The notice does not establish that every failure on a self-hosted runner has this cause, so inspect the actual runner environment and workflow logs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the migration in the affected workflow
- Inventory the actions used by the affected workflows, including reusable workflows. Mark which JavaScript actions your team maintains and which are external dependencies.
- For each local JavaScript action, check
runs.using, its main/pre/post entry points, and the dependencies included in its release package. Set the runtime tonode24, test it, and publish a release. - For each external action, check the maintainer’s release notes or metadata for Node 24 support, then update the workflow’s
uses:reference according to your pinning policy. - If job commands themselves require Node 24, configure
actions/setup-nodewithnode-version: '24'independently of the action-runtime changes. - Run the affected workflow on the runner operating system and architecture used by the project. Review logs for action startup, dependency, and command failures.
GitHub’s action-development guide describes packaging dependencies and testing an action in a workflow. These validation steps are guidance; no particular action or workflow is guaranteed to pass without being tested in your environment.
