To test WordPress accessibility, complete a real task without a mouse, then repeat it with a screen reader. Check that controls can be reached and operated, focus is visible, names and labels are meaningful, reading order makes sense, and changes or errors are announced. Automated scans can help find some issues, but they cannot establish that a page works for keyboard or screen-reader users.
Choose a real WordPress task to test
Start with a page, feature, or change and a specific task a visitor or editor needs to complete. Examples include opening site navigation, submitting a search, completing a form, using a dialog, or changing a block setting. Test the controls involved in that flow rather than treating a single scan or a quick tour of the homepage as a site-wide assessment.
WordPress’s accessibility testing pathway frames testing around a particular issue and asks testers to document what they tested and how. The hands-on Block Editor accessibility guidance is specifically about Gutenberg: its examples are useful for editing, but its shortcuts should not be assumed to work identically in every theme, plugin, browser, or front-end interface.
Test the flow with a keyboard
Set the mouse aside and use Tab to move forward and Shift+Tab to move backward. Follow the task from start to finish, operating each control with the keyboard. A user should be able to tell where focus is, reach every actionable control, and leave menus, dialogs, or other widgets without getting trapped.

- Can you reach each link, button, input, menu item, and other control needed for the task?
- Is the focused item visibly identifiable as you move forward and backward?
- Can you open and close menus, drawers, and dialogs, and is focus still understandable afterward?
- Does a grouped control or menu respond with the expected arrow-key behavior, where applicable?
- Can you exit each interactive component and continue through the page?
For the Gutenberg editor, WordPress says buttons should activate with Enter and Space. It says checkboxes and radio buttons should be checked with Space, not Enter. These are useful checks for the editor guidance, not a reason to add custom keyboard behavior to every control. For grouped widgets that use arrow keys, WordPress suggests considering an appropriate WAI-ARIA composite role; use semantic HTML and ARIA only where they fit the interface.
Also consider whether an interaction is predictable. WordPress notes that confusion for a sighted tester can point to difficulty for keyboard-only users as well.

Repeat the task with a screen reader
Use a screen reader to navigate the same flow and listen for the information a user needs at each step. Check whether control names are meaningful, roles are conveyed, form labels are associated with their fields, and the reading order follows the task. Check whether headings and landmarks provide useful ways to move around, and whether state changes or errors are announced.
WordPress’s Gutenberg handbook documents NVDA with Firefox and VoiceOver with Safari as test examples. Its editor-specific instructions describe NVDA’s Elements List shortcut, Insert+F7, for inspecting links, headings, form fields, buttons, and landmarks; it also describes VoiceOver’s Rotor shortcut, Control+Option+U, for choosing a region. The handbook was last updated September 15, 2026. Shortcuts and behavior can vary by operating system, application, and configuration, so consult current screen-reader documentation if a command differs.

The WordPress contributor testing pathway calls out roles, reading order, alternative text, and form labels as screen-reader checks. Listen in both reading and element-navigation modes where useful; the goal is not merely to hear that something exists, but to determine whether its meaning and state are clear enough to complete the task.
Choose a setup that fits the interface
Match the browser, operating system, and assistive technology to the audience and the interface you are testing. The WordPress handbook’s NVDA/Firefox and VoiceOver/Safari examples are starting points, not a complete compatibility matrix. A Gutenberg editing task, a public-facing form, and a plugin dialog may warrant different coverage.

Do not treat dated popularity figures as a current ranking. WebAIM’s Screen Reader User Survey #8 was conducted in August–September 2019, received 1,224 valid responses, and warns that its uncontrolled sample may not represent all screen-reader users. Among its respondents, the reported pairings were:

Use automated checks as a supplement
The WordPress contributor pathway recommends axe DevTools as an initial browser scan, while emphasizing that automated tools catch only about 30% of issues and are a starting point rather than a complete test. A clean scan does not show whether focus is visible, a keyboard interaction is usable, the reading order is sensible, or a screen reader announces a field or error correctly.
WordPress’s Accessibility Coding Standards state that WordPress core, WordPress.org websites, and official plugins are expected to conform to WCAG 2.2 Level AA. WCAG organizes guidance around perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust content. Keyboard operation relates to operability; compatibility with assistive technologies relates to robustness. WordPress also says usability testing matters alongside checking success criteria. Report the methods and scope you actually tested rather than claiming that a site is accessible or WCAG-conformant based on one scan, one page, or one setup.
Understand what an accessibility-ready theme label means
An accessibility-ready theme label is not proof that a whole site meets WCAG 2.2 AA. WordPress describes the tag as a minimum theme-review standard; WCAG evaluates content, while a theme is a wrapper around that content. A site’s pages, content, plugins, and interactions still need testing. WordPress announced updated accessibility-ready requirements effective May 6, 2026, with testing steps, tools, and pass/fail criteria, but the tag does not establish conformance for the complete site.
Record findings so someone can reproduce them
For each issue, capture the page or feature, environment, steps, expected behavior, and what actually happened. Include the operating system, browser, screen reader and version when known. A screenshot or relevant screen-reader speech output can help clarify the result.
