Java full-stack interviews usually test breadth across Java fundamentals, Spring or Spring Boot, HTTP and REST APIs, databases, and frontend integration. The exact mix depends on the employer and role: use the questions below as a study map, not a prediction of what a particular interviewer will ask. For each answer, define the idea, explain why it matters, connect it to a project, and name a trade-off or way you verified the result.
What to expect in a Java full-stack interview
Be ready to discuss how a feature moves through the application: a user action in the frontend, an HTTP request, backend logic, data access, and a response the UI can handle. A reviewed preparation guide groups common topics into Core Java, Spring and Spring Boot, REST APIs, frontend integration, and databases; it suggests that some mid- to senior-level interviews may also include system design or behavioral rounds. That is a commercial guide’s framework, not a survey of hiring practices. The job description and interview format are better clues to the emphasis of a specific process.
Interviewers may ask for a definition first, then probe a choice: why use one design over another, what could go wrong, and how you would test or measure the result. Avoid treating a memorized list as a substitute for explaining your reasoning.
Core Java questions
What is the difference between == and .equals()?
For primitives, == compares values. For object references, it checks whether both references point to the same object. .equals() is a method intended to express logical equality, but its behavior depends on the class implementation. If the discussion turns to hash-based collections, explain that classes that define equality should also implement hashCode() consistently with it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A useful example is comparing two separately created objects that represent the same domain value: reference identity may be false even when a correctly implemented equals() says the values are equal. Be prepared to discuss the relevant class rather than assume every class has value-based equality.
How do abstract classes and interfaces differ?
Compare the capabilities and constraints of each in the Java version the role uses, then tie your choice to a design. For example, explain whether you need a shared base implementation or a contract that different types can implement. Avoid absolute claims about interfaces that ignore modern Java language features; check the employer’s JDK context using the Oracle Java documentation.
How does Java memory management work, and can Java have memory leaks?
Explain that method calls use stack frames while objects are generally allocated on the heap, then distinguish garbage collection from application-level lifetime needs. Java can have a memory leak in the practical sense that an object remains reachable through an unintended reference after the application no longer needs it, so the garbage collector cannot reclaim it. Details vary by implementation and Java release; consult the documentation for the JDK in use rather than overgeneralizing.
How would you handle a race condition?
Start by identifying the shared state and the consistency requirement: what must remain true if two operations happen at once? Then choose an appropriate synchronization or java.util.concurrent mechanism, explain the trade-off, and describe how you would test concurrent behavior. No single mechanism is best for every race; the right answer depends on access patterns, throughput needs, and correctness guarantees.

Spring and Spring Boot questions
What does Spring Boot auto-configuration do?
Spring Boot attempts to configure an application based on dependencies available on the classpath. Application configuration can replace particular defaults. A clear answer distinguishes “Boot can supply a sensible configuration” from “the application cannot control that configuration.” The official Spring Boot 4.1.1 auto-configuration reference describes the behavior; an employer may use a different Spring Boot version.
What is dependency injection?
Dependency injection means an object declares the collaborators it needs and an inversion-of-control (IoC) container supplies those dependencies as it creates and configures beans. With constructor injection, for example, a service can declare a repository in its constructor. In a test, a replacement dependency can isolate the service from the real database layer. The Spring Framework 7.0.9 IoC and beans reference explains the container model; version details should match the stack being discussed.
How would you structure a CRUD endpoint?
Describe the boundaries you would use, not a one-size-fits-all mandated architecture:
- Controller: receive the HTTP request, validate its shape, and map the response to the API contract.
- Business logic: apply domain rules and coordinate the operation.
- Data access: read or persist data through a repository or other suitable mechanism.
- Failure handling and verification: map expected failures to useful HTTP responses and test the behavior, including validation and error cases.
Make the example concrete: say what the endpoint does, where a rule belongs, and how you would prove that the response and persistence behavior are correct.

When would you use Spring Data JPA versus a custom query?
Discuss the repository abstraction and the needs of the particular query. A derived query may be appropriate for straightforward access; a custom or native query may be justified by query complexity or measured performance requirements. Explain how you would inspect generated SQL and verify behavior against representative data. Exact implementation details depend on the Spring Data version in the project.
REST and HTTP questions
What makes an API RESTful?
Discuss resources, stateless request handling, and HTTP methods and status codes used consistently with the API’s semantics. A slogan alone is not a sufficient answer: show how a client interacts with a resource and explain the contract. Use the MDN HTTP request methods reference to check method definitions.
How do PUT and PATCH differ?
Explain the update behavior your API contract assigns to each method, including what clients should expect when fields are omitted. Do not assume method names alone settle the behavior: check the applicable specification and the endpoint’s documented contract before making a precise claim.
How would you secure an endpoint?
Separate authentication—establishing who is making a request—from authorization—deciding what that identity may do. Then describe the identity mechanism and threat assumptions relevant to the system. A strong answer makes clear that the appropriate controls depend on the architecture and the endpoint’s data and actions.

Frontend and backend integration questions
How does a React or Angular UI communicate with a Java backend?
Walk through a real request: the UI sends an HTTP request, the backend returns a response (often JSON), and the frontend updates the interface. Explain how the UI represents loading and failure states, and mention browser-origin configuration when the frontend and backend origins make it relevant. Name the framework you have actually used and be candid about your level of hands-on experience.
How do you manage UI state?
Start with the scope and lifetime of the state. Choose the simplest mechanism that fits, then justify a shared-state library if several parts of the application need coordinated access. For a React role, the official React Quick Start and learning resources cover framework-specific basics; go deeper in the framework named by the job.
How do you handle backend errors in the UI?
Explain how status codes and response data become understandable feedback for the user, and how the interface avoids silently swallowing failures. Give an example of a user-facing message and describe how you would preserve enough diagnostic information for troubleshooting without presenting raw internal errors as the UI experience.

How do you investigate a slow query?
Begin with evidence: inspect the query shape, an execution plan, and relevant indexes. Then change one thing at a time and measure against representative data. Database engine, data distribution, and workload affect the outcome, so do not present an index or rewrite as a universal fix.

What is normalization, and when might you denormalize?
Explain that normalization organizes data to reduce unnecessary redundancy and support integrity. Denormalization may be considered when a particular access pattern justifies storing some repeated or derived data, but it creates consistency and update trade-offs. It is not automatically faster; explain how you would establish whether it helps in the workload at hand.
Should you choose SQL or NoSQL?
Start with access patterns, relationships, consistency needs, operational constraints, and scaling characteristics. Explain why the data model and workload fit a candidate technology. Avoid declaring one category universally superior: the answer depends on the system’s requirements, and a high-level comparison is not a substitute for workload-specific evidence.
How interview emphasis can vary by level
One preparation guide offers this heuristic, not a representative study of employers:
| Role level | Topics the guide emphasizes |
|---|---|
| Junior | Java fundamentals and basic CRUD |
| Mid-level | Spring Boot architecture, REST design, and SQL joins |
| Senior | System design, performance, concurrency, and trade-offs |
Use the job description to refine this map and ask about the interview format when possible. A title alone does not guarantee which subjects will appear.
A practical structure for answering any question
- Define it: state the concept in your own words, at the level the question requires.
- Explain why it matters: connect it to correctness, maintainability, performance, security, or the user experience.
- Give a project example: identify the situation, your decision, and your contribution without claiming experience you do not have.
- Name a trade-off: compare options on semantics, complexity, measured performance, security, testability, and fit with the existing system.
- Say how you verified it: mention the test, execution plan, metric, or observed behavior that supports your conclusion.
If you do not know an answer, say what you are unsure about and explain how you would investigate it. That is more credible than inventing a project example or stating an unsupported universal rule.
