Some Android apps work well on a wide foldable screen; others merely run. An app may fill the unfolded display without adapting its layout, so the real test is whether it stays readable, makes useful use of the extra width, and preserves its state as you fold, rotate, or resize the window. Results depend on the app and its version, the device, and its Android version.
What “works well” means on a foldable
Android’s large-screen quality guidance separates basic usability from a layout that is optimized for a large display and from experiences designed to use foldable capabilities. In the basic adaptive-ready tier, an app can run full-screen or in a full app window and support critical tasks even if its layout is less than ideal. Filling the inner screen, by itself, is not evidence of a foldable-optimized design. See Android’s large-screen app quality guidelines.
For a practical assessment, consider four separate questions:
- Compatibility: Can you complete the app’s essential tasks, and does it use the available app window rather than being letterboxed?
- Layout: Does the interface use the wider space sensibly while keeping text and controls readable, or does a phone layout simply stretch?
- Continuity: Does the app retain its state and essential functions when you fold or unfold the device, rotate it, or resize its window?
- Foldable-specific usefulness: Where relevant, does it respond usefully to postures, multitasking, or the camera’s changing display configuration?
What Android 16 changes—and what it does not
Android Developers says that “Android 16 (API level 36) enables apps to adapt to different form factors and display sizes by overriding app restrictions for screen orientation, aspect ratio, and resizability.” The platform guide describes this behavior for apps targeting API 36 on qualifying displays with a smallest width of at least 600dp, including the inner displays of large-screen foldables. In those cases, Android can ignore certain app-set orientation, resizability, and aspect-ratio restrictions, subject to documented exceptions and an opt-out. The guide says the opt-out capability is planned to be eliminated at API level 37. Check the current Android orientation, aspect-ratio, and resizability guidance for release-sensitive details.

This is a compatibility change, not an automatic interface redesign. The system may allow an app to occupy a larger or differently shaped window, but the app still needs an appropriate layout to make that space useful. It may therefore fill the screen and still look awkward, sparse, stretched, or difficult to navigate.
How to judge an app on your device
Use the app for the tasks you care about and check its behavior in more than one configuration. Android recommends testing across multiple device and window configurations; the exact modes available depend on the device.

- Open it folded and unfolded. Check whether the app remains usable in both states and whether content or controls change sensibly with the available space.
- Try portrait and landscape. Look for useful use of width, such as a second content pane or navigation rail, rather than a phone interface stretched across the display. Android’s foldable guidance shows a two-pane layout with a navigation rail as one example for an unfolded landscape display.
- Fold, unfold, rotate, or resize while doing something. Confirm that the app preserves your place, entered information, and other relevant state, and that essential actions remain available.
- Try split-screen or another resizable window mode if you expect to multitask. Check that the app remains functional at the smaller window size. Large-screen foldables support split-screen, and some devices offer desktop windowing; availability varies by device.
- Check content and controls. Text should be comfortable to read, and graphics should not appear noticeably distorted, blurred, or pixelated. Android’s quality guidance gives a 45–75 character line length for supported languages as a guideline, not a guarantee that any particular app meets it.
- Inspect posture-specific behavior when it matters. Book posture can suit reading; tabletop posture can suit video or calls. Check whether the app keeps content and controls usable and avoids placing dialogs or pop-ups across the fold. These postures are only useful when the app’s function and design support them.
- For camera apps, test the preview in both folded and unfolded states. Android’s foldable quality guidance calls for camera preview adjustments across those states.
Why one app—or device—may behave differently
App behavior is not determined by screen width alone. The app’s version and target SDK, the device’s hardware and Android version, and the way the app responds to window resizing and fold-state changes all matter. A platform change can affect how an app is displayed without changing the app’s own layout, so results may differ between apps and configurations.
Android’s platform and quality guidance describes expected behaviors; it does not establish what percentage of apps are optimized for wide foldables or how a named app performs. Without app-specific testing, there is no basis for declaring which apps work best. If you are considering a foldable, treat the inner screen as a way to evaluate the apps you rely on—not as a fix for an app that handles large displays poorly.
