Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) lets you install a Linux distribution and use its command-line tools and applications alongside Windows 11. For most developers, the practical starting point is Microsoft’s wsl --install command, followed by keeping Linux-focused projects in WSL’s own filesystem. WSL also supports Windows–Linux command integration, Linux GUI applications, and systemd services, subject to version and application requirements. Here’s what developers should know about running Linux tools directly on Windows 11.

What WSL is—and what it is not

WSL is a Windows feature for running a GNU/Linux environment, not merely a shell that imitates Linux commands. You install a Linux distribution, such as Ubuntu, and run Linux tools in that environment. Microsoft describes WSL as a way to use Linux tools alongside Windows without the overhead of a traditional virtual machine or a dual-boot setup. See Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Linux documentation.

For most Windows 11 developers, WSL 2 is the natural starting point: Microsoft’s standard installation flow sets WSL 2 as the default. It can make Linux tooling accessible without leaving the Windows desktop, but it does not mean every Linux application, hardware feature, or workflow behaves exactly as it would on a native Linux installation.

How to install WSL on Windows 11

  1. Open PowerShell or Command Prompt and run wsl --install. Use an account with the permissions needed to enable Windows components.
  2. Follow any prompts. Microsoft’s installation flow enables WSL and Virtual Machine Platform, downloads the latest Linux kernel, sets WSL 2 as the default, and installs Ubuntu by default.
  3. Restart Windows if prompted, then launch the installed distribution from the Start menu or terminal.
  4. On first launch, create a Linux username and password. These are for the Linux distribution; they are not a replacement for your Windows sign-in.

Microsoft’s setup details are in Set up a WSL development environment. If installation fails, check the exact error and Windows configuration against Microsoft’s current instructions rather than assuming all Windows editions or organization-managed devices permit the required components.

Where to store project files

Choose the filesystem based on the tools that will work on the project. If Linux command-line tools will build, test, or process the files, keep the repository in the WSL Linux filesystem—for example, under /home/<user>. Microsoft recommends this arrangement for the fastest performance when working with Linux tools.

If Windows-native tools are the primary editors or processors, keep the project on the Windows filesystem. Linux can access Windows drives under /mnt/ by default, such as /mnt/c/Users/<username>, but working across the Windows–Linux filesystem boundary can significantly slow performance compared with keeping files alongside the tools that use them.

You can browse a Linux-side project from Windows File Explorer using a path such as \wsl$<DistroName>home<UserName>Project. Windows can also access Linux files through \wsl.localhost<DistroName>.... Microsoft notes that the share is available while the distribution is running. See Microsoft’s WSL development environment guidance and WSL interop documentation.

How Windows and Linux work together

WSL is designed for cross-platform workflows: from a Linux shell, you can invoke Windows executables; from Windows, you can launch Linux commands. Microsoft also documents piping output from a Windows command into Linux tools. This can be useful when a project combines Windows utilities with Linux build, scripting, or text-processing tools. The exact command invocation and environment behavior depend on interop settings and the tools involved, so consult Microsoft’s Windows and Linux integration guide for specifics.

Windows drives are mounted under /mnt/ by default. File access is convenient, but the mount location does not remove the performance trade-off of crossing filesystems for Linux-heavy work.

Linux GUI apps, GPU workflows, and services

Linux graphical applications

Microsoft supports Linux GUI applications in WSL, including X11 and Wayland apps, with Linux windows integrated into the Windows desktop. That does not guarantee that every Linux GUI application will work identically. Check Microsoft’s Linux GUI apps with WSL guide for the prerequisites and application-specific considerations relevant to your setup.

GPU-accelerated work

Microsoft’s development environment guidance includes a setup path for GPU-accelerated machine-learning workflows. Acceleration depends on the hardware, drivers, and software configuration; verify the current Microsoft and GPU-vendor requirements for your specific workload before relying on it.

systemd and Linux services

WSL supports systemd for managing Linux services. Microsoft says WSL version 0.67.6 or newer is required to enable systemd for distributions other than the current Ubuntu installed by wsl --install. Check the installed WSL version with wsl --version and update WSL if it is too old. Enabling systemd also does not keep a WSL instance running by itself; services do not prevent the instance from stopping. Follow Microsoft’s systemd setup instructions for the configuration steps.

Security, permissions, and managed devices

Linux programs that access Windows files do so with the Windows permissions of the account that launched wsl.exe. Linux root inside a distribution does not grant Windows administrator rights that the Windows account does not already have. Microsoft explains this boundary in its enterprise WSL guidance.

For organization-managed devices, availability and controls depend on Windows versions and policy. Microsoft’s enterprise setup guidance describes Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 11 22H2 as its prerequisite range for that setup. The advanced networking features covered there require Windows 11 22H2 or newer and WSL 2.0.9 or newer; under that described configuration, Windows firewall rules apply to WSL. Administrators should check the current Microsoft guidance and their organization’s policies before deployment. The enterprise guide also discusses management with controls such as Defender for Endpoint and Intune.

When WSL fits—and what to evaluate first

WSL is a practical fit when you want Linux development tools close to your Windows workflow, need to combine Windows and Linux commands, or want to access Linux files and applications without switching to a separate dual-boot environment. Before committing a team or workload, consider:

  • Filesystem needs: Which operating system’s tools will do most of the work? Keep project files on that side to avoid cross-filesystem slowdowns.
  • Linux environment requirements: Confirm that your required tools and services work in your chosen distribution and WSL configuration.
  • GUI or GPU dependencies: Check the relevant application, Windows, WSL, hardware, and driver prerequisites rather than assuming support is universal.
  • Administration and policy: Verify that required Windows components and WSL versions are allowed and supported on your device.

WSL, a traditional virtual machine, dual boot, and native Linux installations involve different trade-offs. The Microsoft guidance cited here establishes WSL’s integration and setup options, but does not provide a feature-by-feature comparison across those alternatives.
