Then refresh the connection and confirm your phone, plan, and SIM are supported and active with your carrier. The steps below use Google Pixel menu paths; Android settings and feature behavior vary by manufacturer and version.
Why a 5G icon may not mean you are using 5G
A 5G symbol can indicate that 5G service is available nearby; it does not prove that your current data session is using 5G. Google Pixel Phone Help explains this distinction on its Fix mobile connectivity issues page. Actual connection and performance depend on factors such as signal, coverage, network type, and carrier conditions.
For a useful test, turn Wi-Fi off and try loading a page over mobile data. If service improves when you move outdoors or to another area, the issue may be local signal or coverage rather than a phone setting. Buildings, walls, and some cases can obstruct mobile signals, including 5G. Ask your carrier about coverage where the problem occurs.
Check mobile data, SIM selection, and network type
Confirm the data SIM is enabled
- On a Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Confirm Mobile data is on and the carrier SIM is enabled.
- If you use more than one SIM, select the SIM you intend to use for mobile data. Pixel allows only one default data SIM at a time; settings can appear under separate SIM tabs.
If mobile data works only on Wi-Fi, also check whether you have reached an account data limit. Do not turn on data roaming without checking your carrier’s terms and possible charges first.

Make sure the preferred network type allows 5G
In the Pixel SIM settings, check Preferred network type and choose an option that includes 5G if your carrier offers it. Available choices can include 5G, LTE, 3G, or 2G, depending on the carrier and device. Avoid forcing a network mode that your phone or carrier does not provide. Google’s Pixel connectivity guidance describes these settings; other Android manufacturers may use different labels and paths.
Check Pixel settings that can affect 5G
During diagnosis, switch off Battery Saver if it is enabled. Google says Pixel Battery Saver turns off 5G. Pixel Adaptive Connectivity may use 5G when an app needs more speed, such as during video streaming or downloads, and is designed to help save battery. Its availability may be limited by some US carriers. These are Pixel-specific behaviors, not rules for every Android phone. See Google’s Adaptive Connectivity help for details.

Refresh the connection and install updates
- Turn airplane mode on, wait briefly, then turn it off and test mobile data again.
- If that does not help, power the phone fully off, wait about 30 seconds, turn it back on, and retest.
- Check for an available Android system update and install it. On Pixel, Google’s general mobile connectivity troubleshooting recommends restarting and checking for updates before more disruptive steps.
Check whether the phone, SIM, and account support the carrier’s 5G
5G capability does not guarantee that a particular phone works on every carrier’s 5G network. Confirm the exact model and its compatibility with your carrier. Google notes that not all Pixel 4a (5G) and later models work with every 5G network; see its Pixel 5G compatibility information. A phone locked to its original carrier may also be restricted to that provider until it is unlocked or the contract ends.
If you see “No SIM,” an inactive SIM, or a SIM error, check that the SIM is present and enabled. If possible, try the SIM in another phone or try another SIM in yours to help narrow down whether the problem follows the SIM or handset. These checks can help localize the issue but do not by themselves prove its cause. Contact your carrier about activation, provisioning, or a SIM error; the carrier can advise whether a replacement is appropriate.

Use the symptoms to narrow down the cause
- Problem only in one place: Compare service in another location, preferably with Wi-Fi off. Ask the carrier about local coverage or an outage.
- All mobile data or calls are affected: Check SIM selection and account status, then ask the carrier to check for an outage or provisioning issue.
- Only 5G is affected: Check preferred network type and confirm your exact phone model supports your carrier’s 5G network.
- The problem began after a SIM, plan, or account change: Ask the carrier to verify activation, provisioning, and whether the plan still includes the service you expect.
- The problem began after an update: Restart, check for another available system update, and note the timing when contacting device support or your carrier.
If you have a second SIM or phone, comparing them may offer clues, but it is not a controlled diagnostic test. The carrier is the authority on your account, local outage status, coverage, SIM activation, and compatibility with its network.
Reset network settings only after simpler checks
On Pixel, the mobile-network reset is at Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings. Labels differ across Android devices, so consult the manufacturer’s instructions for another model. If considering a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth reset instead, note that Google says it clears saved Wi-Fi connections.

Factory reset is a last resort, not a first troubleshooting step. It erases phone data, so back up the device before considering it and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Google lists it after other troubleshooting in its Pixel mobile connectivity help.

Contact the carrier if basic settings and connection refreshes do not resolve the issue, if the SIM is inactive or produces an error, or if the problem is limited to a location or started after an account change. Ask it to check:

- Whether there is a local outage or a coverage limitation at the affected location.
- Whether your plan and account are provisioned for the service you expect.
- Whether the SIM is activated and working on the account.
- Whether the exact model of your phone is supported on that carrier’s 5G network.
For non-Pixel phones, use the support instructions for your specific manufacturer and model: menu names, reset behavior, and power-saving features are not universal across Android.
