Start with the state’s official school report card, then look beyond its headline rating: compare academic progress, attendance, school climate, staffing, programs and subgroup results. Before choosing a home, ask the district to confirm which school serves that exact address for the year your child will enroll. A district boundary does not necessarily determine a student’s assigned school.

Start with official state and district report cards

Use the U.S. Department of Education’s directory of state report-card websites to find the official source for a state. State and district report cards are the best starting point because they explain measures using that state’s definitions and identify the year the data cover. Federal guidance describes report-card information on test performance, graduation, absenteeism, suspensions, teacher qualifications and other state-selected indicators.

Check the reporting year before comparing districts. Data may describe a prior school year, and states differ in what they publish and when they refresh it. For detail beyond a summary card, look for state or district dashboards: for example, New York’s data and reporting resources include measures such as attendance, discipline, educator demographics, graduation and test results.

Look beyond a single rating or test score

An overall grade or test result is only one view of a school system. Review a set of measures that can reveal different parts of a student’s experience. Federal reporting guidance describes performance, school climate, staffing and financial transparency among the areas families can examine.

  • Attendance and chronic absenteeism: These measures can show whether students are regularly in school.
  • Graduation and progression: Consider graduation outcomes and the measures available for students moving through school.
  • Climate and discipline: Look for suspensions and other discipline information, alongside available school-climate indicators.
  • Staffing and qualifications: Check what the state reports about educators, qualifications and staffing.
  • Programs and services: Find out whether schools offer the instruction, supports or services your child may need.
  • Financial transparency: Review published spending information where it is available, while recognizing that spending alone does not establish the quality of a student’s experience.

States may make these details available in different formats. Oregon, for instance, presents selected school measures against statewide averages through its school and district profiles.

Check results for students with needs like your child’s

When the report card provides them, examine results for groups such as students with disabilities, English learners and economically disadvantaged students. Federal guidance describes disaggregation requirements, and the Department of Education’s school-selection guide encourages families to ask how students similar to their child have performed.

Group results provide context, not a prediction for an individual student. Use them to prompt specific questions about available supports, services and student progress rather than assuming that a group average will describe your child’s outcome.

Compare districts using matching years and context

When weighing two or more districts, compare the same data year and use the state’s definitions for each measure wherever possible. If multiple years are published, look at the direction of the results rather than treating one year as the whole story. Use peer comparisons carefully: a statewide average or selected comparison group can provide context, but it does not settle whether a school is a good fit for a particular child.

Accountability ratings are state-specific and can change as methods are revised. New York’s published materials describe changes taking effect in the 2025–26 school year; read any rating alongside its year and the methodology that produced it, rather than treating it as a timeless score. See the New York accountability resources for state materials.

There is no universal weighting formula for these measures. Decide which factors matter most for your family and your child, then record what you learn about academics, attendance, climate, staffing, subgroup outcomes, programs, spending and logistics.

Verify the assigned school for the exact address

A district boundary identifies the district associated with an area; it does not necessarily identify the campus a child will attend. School assignment may depend on attendance zones, other local methods or transfer policies. Before committing to a property, ask the district to confirm both the district and assigned school for the exact address and intended enrollment year.

Do not treat an online locator map as a final address-level determination. The Texas Education Agency says its boundary map is approximate and not intended for commercial transactions or legal purposes. Its frequently asked questions advise contacting the district or local county authorities for detailed confirmation. That is Texas-specific guidance, but it illustrates why families should verify boundaries and assignment with the responsible local authorities.

Ask the district practical questions before you move

Contact district staff and check current district materials for details that a report card or map may not settle. Policies and program availability vary locally, so seek confirmation for your child’s circumstances and enrollment year.

  • Which school is assigned to this exact address for the year my child will enroll?
  • What is the enrollment timeline, and what documents or steps are required?
  • Are the programs and services my child needs available at the assigned school?
  • How does transportation work for this address and school?
  • Are transfers or school-choice options available, and what rules or deadlines apply?
  • How have relevant score trends, progression, attrition and discipline changed?
  • What supports are available, and how does the school address safety and student needs?

The Department of Education’s school-selection guide includes questions about score trends, similar students, progression, attrition, discipline, supports and safety. Use those topics to guide a conversation, then verify policies and answers with the district.
