ChatGPT limits depend on your plan, model, and feature, so there is no single message cap that applies to every account. For errors or slow replies, check OpenAI’s live status page first; for privacy, the “Improve the model for everyone” setting controls whether new consumer chats are used to train models, not whether chats remain in history.
What is my ChatGPT message limit?
There is no permanent, universal number of messages available to every ChatGPT user. OpenAI says limits can vary by plan and model and may change. Paid plans generally have higher limits than Free, but a limit for one model or feature should not be assumed to apply to another. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT FAQ for general plan guidance and follow the limit notice shown in your account for the applicable model or tool.
OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ says ordinary everyday text chats on Free are unlimited subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. That does not mean every model or feature is unlimited: separate limits can apply to model access, file and image uploads, voice, data analysis, and image creation. When a tool limit is reached, ChatGPT notifies you and may show when access resets.
- Check the plan and model you are using.
- Identify whether the notice concerns messages or a separate feature such as uploads or voice.
- Use the in-product notice for the reset timing that applies to your account; do not rely on an old cap quoted without its plan, model, and date.
Is ChatGPT down right now?
Check the OpenAI Status page for current incidents before changing your device or account settings. Status can differ by product or feature, so an incident affecting one part of the service does not necessarily mean all ChatGPT access is unavailable. This page must be checked live; a past report cannot establish whether ChatGPT is down at the moment you read this.

If the status page does not show an incident that explains the problem, investigate your browser, network, and extensions. OpenAI lists both temporary server-side problems and local setup issues as possible causes of generic errors and slow responses.
Why is ChatGPT slow or showing an error?
Try these checks in order. Change one thing at a time where practical so you can tell whether the cause appears to be service-wide, model-specific, or local to your browser or network.

- Check service status: Open the OpenAI Status page and look for an incident affecting the feature you are using.
- Refresh the session: Refresh ChatGPT or start a new chat. If a response is stuck, try a hard refresh, then sign out and back in if needed.
- Isolate the browser: Open ChatGPT in a private window or another browser. Temporarily disable extensions, especially privacy or security tools, and try again.
- Check network filters: If you use a VPN, proxy, secure DNS, or managed-network filter, temporarily turn it off if permitted. Try another network, such as a different Wi-Fi connection, to see whether the problem follows the network.
- Clear ChatGPT site data: If the issue continues, clear the site’s data, including cookies, rather than only clearing cached files. This may sign you out.
- Compare models and devices: Try another model or a new chat, and if possible another device. A failure isolated to one model, browser, or network points to a different problem from one that follows your account across environments.
For a failed generation, use Regenerate if available, or retry after restarting the browser or device. Peak hours can coincide with slower replies, but that alone does not identify the cause of a particular delay. OpenAI’s guides cover common ChatGPT errors and slow responses.
What to send Support if the problem persists
If the same issue continues across browsers, devices, and networks, contact OpenAI Support through the Help Center. Include the time it occurred, the model and conversation details, and any request IDs or browser-console errors you can collect. OpenAI’s slow-response guidance also recommends a HAR file for continued troubleshooting; avoid sharing sensitive conversation content unless Support needs it to investigate.

Why can’t I log in to ChatGPT?
Use the same sign-in method you used when creating the account: email and password, Google, Microsoft, or Apple. Choosing a different provider can lead to a different login flow or account. If you are still signed in on another device, check Settings → Account for the account email before signing out.
For verification loops or generic login errors, check the status page, then try a private window, another browser or device, or another network. VPNs and proxies, ad or script blockers, restricted cookies or JavaScript, and managed-network rules can interfere with sign-in or Cloudflare verification. Temporarily disabling a conflicting tool may help identify the cause. Follow the specific error message before resetting credentials or creating another account. Are my ChatGPT conversations used to train models?
For consumer ChatGPT services, OpenAI says content may be used to improve model performance depending on your settings. Turning off Improve the model for everyone means new conversations will not be used to train OpenAI models, but they can still appear in chat history. This setting controls training use; it is not a history or deletion control.
OpenAI says access to consumer content may be available to a limited number of authorized personnel and trusted service providers for purposes including investigating abuse or security issues, providing user-requested support, addressing legal matters, and improving models unless you have opted out. Its Data Usage for Consumer Services FAQ says content is not shared for marketing or advertising. It also says cleared chats are deleted within 30 days, except where they have already been de-identified and disassociated or must be retained for security or legal reasons. Content may be stored on OpenAI and service-provider systems in the US and around the world.

These statements concern consumer services. OpenAI says business offerings are not used to improve models by default unless the customer opts in; workspace settings and policies may differ.
How do I turn off ChatGPT training?
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone, if the option is available for your account.
For signed-in users, OpenAI says the setting applies across devices. When using ChatGPT signed out, the setting is browser-specific. Available controls can vary with sign-in state, plan, and workspace settings. See OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ for the current account-specific guidance.
