You can pursue nonidentifying records, a mutual-consent registry, an authorized intermediary, a court process, DNA matching, or more than one route. None guarantees a match or reunion; you can set the pace and decide what kind of contact you want.
Before you search, decide what you hope to learn
“Finding” a biological parent can mean different things: getting medical history, learning identifying information, making a first contact, or building an ongoing relationship. Knowing which matters most can help you choose a route and decide what you are ready to do if the search brings difficult or unexpected information.
Searching may bring relief, excitement, grief, anger, uncertainty—or no clear answer. Consider telling a trusted person what you are doing, joining an adoption-informed support group, or speaking with a counselor familiar with adoption. You can pause or change your goals at any point.
Gather the information and records you already have
If it feels appropriate, ask adoptive parents or other trusted relatives what they know about the adoption. Useful details may include the state and county, adoption date, agency, attorney, intermediary, or hospital. You do not need to have every detail before starting.

- Collect available adoption paperwork, your amended birth certificate, letters, photographs, and hospital records.
- Look for any nonidentifying background or medical information provided at the time of the adoption.
- Write down names, dates, places, and how you learned each detail. Keep copies of documents and note which details are uncertain.
These clues can help you identify which agency or court may hold the original records. An amended birth certificate is not necessarily the original birth certificate and may not provide the identifying information you seek.
Find the state authority and check its current rules
Adoption-record access is jurisdiction-specific. Start with the state where the adoption was finalized and the state where you were born; they may be different. Then confirm which state agency, court, or adoption professional holds the records and which authority handles your request. Use current official state vital-records and adoption pages rather than relying on an old state-by-state list.
Rules differ: an adult adoptee may be able to request an original birth certificate in one state, while another may require a mutual-consent match, redaction, a court order, or use of an intermediary. Eligibility, identity documents, forms, fees, and processing times also vary. Child Welfare Information Gateway’s guide Access to an Original Birth Certificate has described access as available to adults in “about half of all States”; that is an approximate figure from a dated guide, not a current state count. Check the applicable state’s rules before acting.
Choose a records or matching route
These routes can complement one another. Which one is available depends on the state and your adoption circumstances. Ask the responsible official agency what it can release, what proof of identity it requires, and whether it has a registry or intermediary process.

| Route | What it may provide | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Nonidentifying information | Background or medical details, even when identifying records remain sealed. | What the responsible agency can release under local rules; ask whether updated medical information can be requested. |
| Original birth certificate or adoption file | Potentially identifying information, such as a birth parent’s name, if it appears in the record and access is permitted. | State law and procedures. A court petition may be an option in some jurisdictions. |
| Mutual-consent registry | A way for adoptees and birth relatives to record interest in exchanging information or being contacted. | Local matching and release rules; a match may require both parties to register or otherwise satisfy consent requirements. |
| Confidential intermediary | In some jurisdictions, an authorized person can search records and approach a relative without immediately disclosing identities. | Local eligibility, authorization, consent rules, fees, and process. Verify the service through the official state agency or court. |
| DNA matching | Potential genetic-relative matches, including relatives who may not be in official adoption records. | Relevant relatives must have tested in that service’s database and allowed their matches to be visible; a match requires careful interpretation. |
There is no reliable nationwide fee, waiting-time, or reunion-success figure for these routes. Ask the relevant state office or court about current costs and timing for the specific process you qualify for.
Request information or records from the agency
Ask the adoption agency or state authority what nonidentifying background and medical information it can provide, whether it can update that information, and how to request it. If you seek identifying records, ask whether adult adoptees can obtain the original birth certificate or adoption file and what restrictions or alternative procedures apply. An original certificate may contain a birth parent’s name, but it may be incomplete or unavailable under the rules that govern your case.
Register for a mutual-consent match
Look for the official state directory for adoption registries and confidential-intermediary services. A mutual-consent registry records that an adoptee or relative is open to contact or exchange of information; the registry’s rules determine whether and when information can be shared. Do not assume that registering alone will produce a match.
Ask whether an intermediary or court petition is available
Some states allow a confidential intermediary to search sealed records and contact a birth relative to ask whether they want to share information or reunite. The person’s role and the consent process are defined locally, not nationally. For example, the Indiana State Department of Health describes its intermediaries as “trained and certified by the Director of the Social Services Administration” to search, contact, and assist with reunification. That description applies to Indiana’s process; it should not be assumed to describe services elsewhere.

Can a DNA test help you find biological family?
Yes. A consumer autosomal DNA test may identify genetic relatives who tested in the same company’s database and chose to appear in matching. It is a complementary route, not a guarantee of identifying a parent: useful relatives may not have tested there, may not be visible, or may appear as a more distant match that takes careful interpretation to understand.
AncestryDNA is one example of an at-home saliva test with opt-in genetic-relative matching. Ancestry says matches may be absent if relatives have not tested in its database or have chosen not to appear. There is not enough comparable evidence here to claim that one company offers the best chance of finding a biological parent.
Decide what data you are comfortable sharing
Before ordering or activating any kit, read the company’s current privacy terms and decide whether to enable relative matching. Ancestry says users can change match visibility and choose what match viewers see; it also offers DNA-data download and deletion controls. Policies and settings can change, so review the current account options rather than assuming a past description remains accurate.

- PRIVATE BY DESIGN: Your DNA data is encrypted, protected, and always under your control. Enhanced security measures are implemented to keep your information safe. Subject to 23andMe’s Terms of Service and Privacy Statement at 23andMe online.
If you download raw DNA data, the file is outside the company’s security environment once downloaded. A third-party site may have its own privacy, retention, and sharing policies. Review those terms separately before uploading. Testing is optional, and it does not replace official records, consent rules, or careful interpretation of a match.
Keep a careful record of matches and clues
Record match labels, shared-match clues, family trees, and the source of each detail. Treat a DNA match as a lead, not proof of a specific relationship or an invitation to contact. Corroborate clues against available records and more than one source before drawing conclusions about parentage or family relationships.

If you identify a relative, consider using an intermediary or a channel that protects both people’s privacy. A brief, low-pressure first message gives the recipient room to decide whether to respond. For example:
Hello. I believe we may be biologically related through an adoption in [state or year]. I’m reaching out to ask whether you would be open to exchanging information. There’s no pressure to respond, and I will respect your privacy and wishes.

Share only the personal details you are comfortable disclosing. A relative may be deceased, difficult to locate, unaware of the adoption or search, or unwilling to communicate. Respect a stated boundary, and consider support before sending a message and while waiting for a response.
Make the search fit your circumstances
You do not have to choose only one route, and you do not have to pursue every route. Some adoptees begin with medical history or nonidentifying information; others first check record access or register for a match. If you use DNA matching, it can sit alongside the official records process rather than replace it.
For a practical starting point, write down your goal and known details, identify the relevant state authority, and ask what records or search services are currently available to you. Move at a pace that feels manageable, and define success in your own terms—whether that means receiving information, making contact, or deciding not to continue.
