What is the difference between Special Edition and Anniversary Edition?
Special Edition is the base game in this comparison. Anniversary Edition is the full-game bundle: it includes Special Edition, the official add-ons Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn, plus Creation Club content. Bethesda describes the bundle as including quests, dungeons, bosses, weapons, spells, armor, and gameplay modes. Its current Anniversary Edition product page lists over 500 unique pieces of Creation Club content.

Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition FAQ uses a separate count: 74 Creations and more than 500 individual elements. Those are different measures, not conflicting counts of the same thing. Bethesda’s product page also cites more than 200 Game of the Year Awards; that is a marketing claim about the game, not a difference between editions.
Which version should you buy?

Should an existing Special Edition owner buy the Anniversary Upgrade?
Buy the upgrade if you specifically want the bundled Creation Club additions. Bethesda says the digital Anniversary Upgrade requires Special Edition; it is not a substitute for the base game. If you do not own Special Edition, select the full Anniversary Edition instead. Check the listing carefully in your platform’s store so you do not mistake the upgrade for a complete game.

Does Anniversary Edition improve graphics or performance?
Do not choose Anniversary Edition expecting a general graphics or performance boost. Bethesda says owners of either Special Edition or Anniversary Edition on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S receive a free next-generation upgrade, which it describes as adding enhanced graphics and faster loading. That upgrade is tied to those consoles and is not an Anniversary Edition-only benefit. Details are on Bethesda Support’s next-generation upgrade page.
What should Nintendo Switch 2 buyers know?
Bethesda’s December 9, 2025 Switch 2 announcement lists features for that version: enhanced resolution with DLSS anti-aliasing, improved load times, optimized performance, mouse control support, motion controls, Amiibo support, and Zelda-inspired in-game items. These features apply to the Switch 2 edition; they should not be assumed to apply on other platforms.
The announcement described a free Switch 2-version download for owners of the original Switch Anniversary Edition, as well as full-game and upgrade purchase routes. Verify the option shown for your account and region before buying, particularly if you already own a Switch version.
How much do the editions cost?

Bethesda’s 2021 FAQ explicitly cautioned that prices and availability may differ by region and platform. Treat the Switch 2 amounts as announcement prices rather than guaranteed current storefront prices.

Format and download requirements matter, especially if you’re buying a physical copy. Bethesda’s FAQ describes physical PS4 and Xbox One copies and says internet access is required to redeem and download the included Creation Club content. For Switch 2, Bethesda announced a physical code-in-box option while identifying the Switch 2 versions as digital downloads. Check the product listing’s platform, edition, and format before completing your purchase.
