More concerning is a repeated or worsening change that interferes with everyday activities—such as managing bills, following directions, or staying safe. Dementia is not a normal part of aging, but forgetfulness alone does not prove dementia. A health care provider can help assess noticeable changes and look for possible causes.
How can you tell the difference between mild forgetfulness and serious memory problems?
Look at the pattern, whether it is changing over time, and how it affects everyday life—not age alone. An occasional lapse is different from repeatedly losing track of information or being unable to manage a familiar task. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) offers examples of both kinds of experience; they are guides for recognizing changes, not diagnostic criteria.
| Area | Occasional lapse | More concerning pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation | Sometimes struggles to find a word. | Has trouble following or joining a conversation. |
| Time | Forgets the day but remembers it later. | Loses track of the date or time of year. |
| Objects | Misplaces something from time to time. | Misplaces things often and cannot find them. |
| Decisions and money | Makes a poor decision once in a while or misses a monthly payment. | Frequently makes poor judgments or cannot manage monthly bills. |
| Familiar activities | Has an occasional lapse without losing independence. | Repeatedly asks the same questions, gets lost in familiar places, struggles to follow recipes or directions, or cannot care for themselves safely. |
These examples are adapted from the NIA’s comparison of age-related forgetfulness and signs of dementia and its guidance on memory and aging. One example on its own cannot establish a diagnosis. If a change is noticeable or concerning, discuss it with a health care provider.
What is the difference between normal forgetfulness, MCI, and dementia?
Occasional forgetfulness
Forgetting something now and then does not by itself mean that a person has dementia. Mild lapses can occur with age, and a person may still handle ordinary responsibilities independently.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI)
MCI means a person has more difficulty with memory or other thinking abilities than is typical for others of the same age, while usually remaining able to care for themselves and carry out day-to-day tasks. It may be an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease, but not everyone with MCI develops Alzheimer’s. Assessment by a clinician is needed to understand what a person’s changes mean.
Dementia
Dementia describes a loss of cognitive functioning and behavioral abilities severe enough to affect quality of life and daily activities. Memory can be affected, but it is not the only possible sign: language, judgment, attention, visual perception, and personality may also change. The NIA explains the distinctions in its pages on signs of Alzheimer’s disease and frequently asked questions about Alzheimer’s disease.

What else can affect memory?
Memory changes can have causes other than dementia, and some may improve when the underlying problem is treated or circumstances change. Possible contributors listed by the NIA include:
- Medication side effects.
- Depression, anxiety, stress, or other stressful life events.
- Sleep problems.
- Alcohol or drug misuse.
- Low vitamin B12 or inadequate nutrition.
- Thyroid, kidney, or liver problems.
- Head injury, or a blood clot, tumor, or infection in the brain.
This is not a way to determine the cause at home. A clinician can review symptoms and relevant health factors. Do not stop a prescribed medication or begin a supplement for memory without discussing it with a health care provider. The NIA’s memory guidance and Alzheimer’s FAQ describe possible causes and the importance of evaluation.

When should you talk with a health care provider?
Make an appointment when memory or thinking changes are noticeable, concerning, or beginning to affect everyday life. Examples the NIA identifies include repeatedly asking the same questions, getting lost in familiar places, having trouble following a recipe or directions, becoming more confused about time, people, or places, and not taking care of oneself safely. These are reasons to seek an assessment, not proof of a particular condition. A provider can evaluate the changes and may refer the person to a neurologist.
If you have noticed changes in yourself
Describe specific examples: what happened, how often, whether it is new or changing, and how it affects daily tasks. If you use a calendar, notes, or a planner to keep track of appointments and commitments, bring that context to the conversation if it helps explain what has changed.

If you are concerned about someone else
Choose a respectful, calm way to share concrete observations rather than arguing over a label or assuming a cause. Offer to help arrange an appointment or attend it, if the person wants support. The NIA’s advice to talk with a doctor about noticeable memory changes applies whether the concern is raised by the person experiencing them or someone close to them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can memory aids or supplements prevent dementia?
Calendars, notes, and to-do lists can help organize everyday tasks, but they are practical aids—not treatments, diagnostic tests, or proven ways to prevent dementia. The NIA cautions that unproven pills, supplements, brain-training games, and similar products marketed to sharpen memory or prevent dementia may be unsafe, waste money, or interfere with other treatment. Ask a health care provider before using a product for memory concerns.
