Yes. Some smart displays can recognize enrolled household members without Apple Face ID and use that recognition to personalize what appears on screen. Google calls its feature Face Match; Amazon calls its feature Visual ID. Both are limited to compatible models and are different from using facial recognition to authenticate someone or unlock a device.

What “recognize” means on a smart display

Here, recognition means a display uses its camera to identify an enrolled household member and show that person’s content. It is not the same as presence detection, which can tell that someone is in or has left a space without establishing who that person is. Neither feature should be assumed to perform Face ID’s device-unlocking role.

Which smart displays offer face recognition?

Feature Compatible display What it does Setup and controls
Google Face Match Google Nest Hub Max Can proactively show personal information, such as calendar events, to an enrolled user. If multiple enrolled users are in front of the display, Voice Match helps determine who is speaking. Requires Voice Match. Camera sensing can be disabled; doing so disables Face Match and Quick Gestures.
Amazon Visual ID Echo Show 8 (2nd generation or newer), Echo Show 10 (3rd generation), Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Echo Show 15, and Echo Show 21 Uses facial recognition to show content from the recognized person’s Alexa profile, including calendars, reminders, skills, and interests. Opt-in. Recognition will not work if the camera is disabled, the shutter is closed, or the camera/microphone disable control is pressed.

These model and feature details come from Google’s Face Match documentation and Amazon’s Visual ID documentation. Check the exact model and generation before choosing a display; recognition is not a universal smart-display feature.

How the features personalize the display

Google Nest Hub Max: Face Match

Face Match can identify an enrolled user without waiting for that person to ask a question. Google’s example is a calendar event appearing when the user walks by. Face Match requires Voice Match, which also helps distinguish who is speaking when more than one enrolled person is present. Setup instructions and labels can vary with the Google Assistant experience in use, so follow the current instructions in the Google Home app.

Amazon Echo Show: Visual ID

Visual ID connects recognition to an Alexa profile. Once enabled and enrolled, it can show the recognized person’s calendars, reminders, skills, and interests. Amazon also describes presence detection for triggering routines when a person enters or leaves a space; that feature detects presence, not identity.

Google Face Match

Google says that, when camera sensing is enabled on Nest Hub Max, Face Match, Quick Gestures, and Look and Talk analyze camera images on the device. The camera-sensing setting can be left off during setup or disabled later; switching it off disables Face Match and Quick Gestures.

Enrollment involves a separate cloud step. Google says the photos used to create the face model are sent to Google during setup and can be reviewed or deleted through My Activity. Google’s Nest privacy commitments state: “After this setup process, Face Match does not send any video or images to Google.” Google also says images and video used for these camera-sensing features are kept separate from advertising and are not used for ad personalization. These are Google’s stated commitments.

Disabling Face Match for a device removes that device’s face model, but does not by itself delete the enrollment images used to create it; Google says to remove those images separately. Disabling Voice Match also turns off Face Match. See Google’s Nest privacy commitments and the current Face Match setup and control instructions.

Amazon Visual ID

Amazon says Visual ID is opt-in and can be deleted on the device or in the Alexa app. It can also be temporarily disabled by switching off the camera and microphones. Visual ID will not work when the camera is disabled, its shutter is closed, or the camera/microphone disable control is pressed. Consult Amazon’s Visual ID instructions for the relevant model’s controls.

What to check before choosing a display

  • Exact model and generation: Confirm that the specific display supports Face Match or Visual ID; the feature names do not apply across every product from either company.
  • Identity versus presence: Look for face-based identification if you want the display to personalize content for a household member. Presence detection alone only senses that someone is there.
  • Setup requirements and content: Face Match requires Voice Match. Visual ID uses an Alexa profile. Review which personal information the feature can show.
  • Opt-in and camera controls: Check how enrollment is enabled and what happens when camera access is turned off or the shutter is closed.
  • Deletion controls: Find out how to remove the device’s face model and any separately retained enrollment images.

Google and Amazon’s documentation does not provide a comparable recognition-accuracy benchmark, so there is no supported basis here for ranking the two features by accuracy.
