There is no proven routine that guarantees you will avoid dementia, but you can support your overall health, make everyday remembering easier, and get help when changes need assessment. The most useful steps are regular activity, enough sleep, managing health conditions, reviewing medicines with a clinician, addressing hearing or vision problems, and staying mentally and socially engaged. Calendars, notes, and task lists can help with day-to-day forgetfulness.
What kinds of memory changes deserve attention?
Occasionally forgetting a name or misplacing an item can happen with normal aging. A more important signal is a persistent or worsening change that interferes with daily activities. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) lists examples such as repeatedly asking the same questions, getting lost in familiar places, struggling to follow a familiar recipe or directions, becoming increasingly confused about time or place, or having trouble caring for yourself safely. These signs do not establish a diagnosis; a health-care professional can assess possible causes.
Memory problems can have causes other than dementia, including health conditions, sleep problems, or medication effects. If changes concern you or someone close to you, describe what is happening and when it began to a clinician rather than trying to diagnose it yourself. See the NIA’s Memory Problems, Forgetfulness, and Aging.
Build habits that support overall health
Be physically active in a way that suits you
Federal guidelines cited by the NIA recommend adults get at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of physical activity each week. Choose activities suited to your current ability and health, and build a routine you can maintain. The NIA notes that research connects physical activity with brain-health outcomes, but more evidence is needed to determine its role in preventing cognitive decline. If you are not active now, consult a clinician before beginning vigorous exercise. The NIA’s Cognitive Health and Older Adults explains this guidance and its limits.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prioritize sleep
The NIA generally recommends older adults get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Sleep supports learning and storing memories, and poor-quality sleep can contribute to memory problems. If sleep is routinely poor, discuss it with a clinician; do not assume forgetfulness is simply part of aging. See the NIA’s Sleep and Older Adults.
Manage health conditions and review medicines
Work with your clinician to manage chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and ask whether any medicines could affect memory, sleep, or brain function. Do not stop or change a prescribed medicine without medical advice. In its summary of SPRINT MIND, the NIA reports that participants aged 50 and older assigned intensive systolic blood-pressure control below 120 mmHg had a reduced risk of mild cognitive impairment over five years of treatment. That is a study finding, not a do-it-yourself blood-pressure target: treatment goals need to be individualized with a clinician. The NIA discusses the study in Thinking About Your Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease? Five Questions To Consider.

Address hearing and vision problems
Untreated hearing or vision problems can make communication and daily tasks harder, so ask about evaluation and appropriate care. Hearing aids are not established as a way to prevent cognitive decline for everyone. The NIA’s 2024 progress report says an NIH-funded hearing intervention showed a cognitive-decline benefit over three years among participants with specified risk factors, but not among participants without those factors. This subgroup finding supports addressing hearing loss when appropriate, not promising that a hearing aid will protect every person’s memory. See Preventing and Treating Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias.
Support health with food and other choices
The NIA recommends a nutritious diet, avoiding smoking, and limiting alcohol as part of supporting cognitive and physical health. These are general health measures, not guaranteed ways to prevent Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. If you have questions about alcohol, nutrition, or how a change fits your health conditions and medicines, ask a clinician.

Stay mentally and socially engaged without expecting a guaranteed effect
Make room for activities that are meaningful to you: learning a skill, pursuing a hobby, or spending time with other people. These activities can add structure and connection to life, but the NIA says lasting benefits for many activities are not definitive. Structured cognitive training has evidence from trials; commercially available brain-training apps have not been shown to match the results of the ACTIVE training study. Treat an app as an optional activity, not a proven treatment or substitute for clinical care.
Use simple aids to make everyday remembering easier
Organizational tools do not prevent memory loss, but they can reduce the burden of keeping tasks and plans in mind. The NIA recommends:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Be cautious about supplements and memory claims
The NIA’s 2024 progress report summarizes findings that a daily broad-spectrum multivitamin modestly improved memory in older adults compared with placebo, and that a meta-analysis of three trial substudies found better global cognition after two years among participants taking a daily multivitamin than among those taking placebo. The report extract does not provide an effect size, and these findings do not establish that everyone should take a multivitamin. Supplements may not be appropriate for every person or alongside every medicine, so discuss them with a clinician or pharmacist. Be wary of products, games, diets, or programs marketed as guaranteed ways to sharpen memory, reverse dementia, or prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

When to talk with a health-care professional
Make an appointment if memory changes are persistent, worsening, or disrupting everyday activities. Bring specific examples: what you forget, how often it happens, when it started, and whether it affects tasks such as cooking, following directions, managing medicines, or getting around familiar places. A clinician can review health conditions, sleep, sensory concerns, and medicines and decide whether further assessment is needed. Seek prompt help if confusion creates an immediate safety risk.
