Before installing a major Windows update, make a separate copy of the personal files you cannot afford to lose and confirm that the copy has finished. You can use Windows Backup with OneDrive, File History, or a manual copy to an external drive. A Windows Recovery Drive is useful for recovery, but it does not back up personal files.
What to back up before a Windows update
Start with files that would be difficult or impossible to replace: documents, photos, videos, projects, downloads, and any locally stored work files. Check beyond the standard Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music folders; apps may save important data elsewhere. If this is a work-managed PC, confirm whether your organization already backs up work files and which locations it covers.
Windows Backup can preserve selected folders and settings through OneDrive, but it is not a complete image of the PC. File History and a manual external-drive copy also focus on files, not a restorable copy of Windows and every installed app.
Choose a backup method

Use Windows Backup and OneDrive
Windows Backup syncs selected folders to OneDrive, subject to account eligibility, available storage, and successful synchronization. Microsoft says a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage; check your available space before relying on it. OneDrive backup is cloud synchronization, not an offline disk image. Make sure the folders you need are selected, then wait for sync to complete and check its status before beginning the update.
Use File History
File History saves copies of personal files to an external drive or network location and can restore earlier versions. Microsoft’s File History instructions explain how to choose and configure a destination. It is suitable when you want a local or network copy of files, but it does not create bootable recovery media.

Copy files to an external drive
For a simple independent copy, connect an external USB storage drive and copy the folders you identified. Open the destination afterward and inspect representative files so you know the copy is present and readable. Once the copy is complete, safely disconnect the drive; leaving it connected exposes it to later changes on the PC.
Verify the backup before installing
- Confirm coverage. Check that the backup includes the folders you need, including important files outside the standard Windows folders.
- Wait for completion. For OneDrive, check Windows Backup or OneDrive sync status. For File History or a manual copy, wait until the process finishes.
- Inspect the destination. Check for representative files in OneDrive, the File History destination, or the external-drive copy. A selection of folders that has not finished syncing or copying is not yet a usable backup.
- Disconnect a local backup drive. After verifying a File History or manual copy, safely eject and disconnect the drive before starting the update.
Create a separate Windows Recovery Drive if you want recovery media
A Recovery Drive can help start recovery or reinstallation if Windows will not boot. It is not a place to store your personal-file backup: Microsoft says personal data must be backed up separately. Creating the drive erases the selected USB drive, so use one whose contents you do not need. Microsoft’s Recovery Drive instructions describe the process.

Do not confuse a Recovery Drive with System Restore. Restore points can undo some system changes, but their scope and retention differ, and later changes may be lost. Microsoft explains the limits of System Restore and restore points; neither should be the only copy of valuable files.
Keep your BitLocker recovery key available
If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, locate and retain access to the recovery key before recovery actions. Microsoft advises knowing the key when using recovery options. Its Windows recovery-options guide also recommends backing up files because some recovery choices can cause data loss.

Do not rely on Windows.old as your backup
After an upgrade, some files may be retrievable from the Windows.old folder for 10 days, according to Microsoft’s Windows.old guidance. That folder can be removed or replaced by later upgrade, reset, or reinstallation activity. Treat it as a temporary recovery option, not as a planned backup.
Before upgrading to Windows 11—or another major version
The same preparation applies whether you are upgrading to Windows 11 or installing a major feature update: identify important files, make a backup in a destination you can access, verify it, and keep the BitLocker key available if encryption is enabled. You do not need a USB drive just to install every Windows update; a USB drive is optional for local file backup and is required only if you choose to make USB recovery media.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s current Windows Backup support guidance. That date is separate from the backup steps above; check Microsoft’s current Windows support information for what applies to your device and edition.
