In the standard 22-car field under the 2026 FIA rules, six drivers are eliminated after each of the first two periods, and the fastest valid Q3 lap earns pole position.
How does F1 race qualifying work?
Qualifying determines the race qualifying classification and the order drivers are placed in for the starting-grid procedure. Every eligible car can take part in Q1. Drivers who advance then compete in Q2 and Q3, with each period narrowing the field.
For a standard field of 22 eligible cars, the 2026 FIA regulations set these durations and eliminations:

There is a seven-minute break between Q1 and Q2, and another seven-minute break between Q2 and Q3. The FIA adjusts elimination counts when the number of eligible cars is different from 22, so the six-driver cuts apply to the standard field, not every possible entry count. What are Q1, Q2 and Q3?
Q1: the first knockout
All eligible drivers have 18 minutes to set a time. In a 22-car field, the six slowest are eliminated. Their qualifying positions are determined by their best Q1 times.
Q2: the second knockout
The 16 drivers who advanced have 15 minutes to set a time. Six are eliminated, and their positions are ordered by their best Q2 times. The remaining ten proceed to Q3.

Q3: the pole shootout
The final ten drivers have 13 minutes to set a time. Their positions at the top of the qualifying classification are determined by their best Q3 times, with the fastest first. Times from Q1 and Q2 do not carry over to decide the order among drivers who reach Q3.
How is pole position decided?
Pole position is first place in the race qualifying classification. The driver with the fastest valid lap in Q3 earns it. For a lap to count in the classification, it must be started and completed by crossing the on-track control line. If two drivers record exactly the same time in a qualifying period, the driver who set it first is ranked ahead. The FIA specifies these classification rules in the 2026 Formula 1 Regulations, Section B.

Pole is a qualifying result, not an unconditional guarantee that a driver will start the race from first on the grid. The final grid follows the qualifying classification and the FIA’s separate grid procedure, which can be affected by later regulatory decisions or penalties.
What happens to drivers eliminated in Q1 and Q2?
Drivers eliminated in Q1 are ranked among themselves by their best Q1 times; those eliminated in Q2 are ranked by their best Q2 times. Each period determines the classification of the drivers who do not advance from it.

If a driver in Q2 or Q3 records no lap time, the FIA’s ordering rules first distinguish whether the driver attempted a flying lap, failed to start one, or did not leave the pits. Drivers within those categories are then ordered using their classification from the previous period.
A driver eliminated in Q1 may be unclassified if they set no valid time or if their best Q1 lap exceeds 107% of the session’s fastest lap. That 107% rule does not apply when the Race Director has declared the track wet. The Stewards may decide whether an unclassified driver can participate later in the event.

Is Sprint Qualifying the same as race qualifying?
No. Sprint Qualifying and race qualifying are separate sessions with separate classifications under the FIA regulations. Sprint Qualifying sets the sprint classification and grid; race qualifying sets the race qualifying classification. The Q1, Q2 and Q3 durations and results described above refer to race qualifying, not Sprint Qualifying.
