Planets disappear behind the Moon during a lunar occultation: from a particular place on Earth, the Moon passes in front of a planet and blocks its light. The planet has not gone anywhere; it is hidden along your line of sight. Because the Moon is nearby, the event is visible only from certain parts of Earth.
Why do planets disappear behind the Moon?
The Moon moves across the sky against more distant background objects. When its apparent disk crosses a planet, the Moon covers the planet from an observer’s perspective. This is an occultation, not a lunar eclipse: an occultation is one object blocking another in the line of sight, while a lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes through Earth’s shadow.
The planets orbit in a relatively flat plane, so their apparent paths lie near the ecliptic. The Moon travels near that band as well, but its orbital plane is tilted. As a result, the Moon often passes near a planet without crossing it. NASA’s historical technical dissertation describes the Moon’s orbital inclination, the movement of its orbital nodes, and parallax as factors affecting occultations. It gives an approximate rule that an object within about six degrees of the ecliptic may be occulted at some time for some observer; that broad condition does not predict an event for a particular date or location. Why can I see the Moon near a planet but not see it disappear?
A close pairing is a conjunction: the objects look close together in the sky. It does not necessarily mean one covers the other. Because the Moon is much closer to Earth than a planet, its apparent position shifts depending on where you observe from. That parallax means a true occultation has a limited viewing region: one observer may see the planet disappear, another may see it skim the lunar edge, and someone elsewhere may see only a close pairing. What does a lunar occultation look like?
The planet appears to touch the Moon’s edge, vanish behind it, and later reappear. Planets have small apparent disks, rather than being perfect points of light, so the disappearance or return may take several seconds. The view depends on which part of the lunar edge crosses the planet and where you are watching from.
Can I see a lunar occultation from where I live?
Possibly, but you need an event prediction for your location. Visibility maps show where the Moon actually covers the planet; outside that path, the two may still appear close together. NASA’s June 2026 guidance about a Venus occultation noted that observers outside the path could see a close Moon–Venus pairing without seeing the planet covered. NASA skywatching guidance, June 2026

For example, NASA reported a daytime Venus occultation on June 17, 2026, visible from parts of the United States and Canada. In an article dated September 4, 2026, NASA listed two further Venus opportunities that year: September 14, visible from parts of Asia, Africa, Europe, and western Russia, and November 7, visible from southern South America. What time will the planet disappear behind the Moon?
There is no single time for everyone. The disappearance and reappearance times depend on your location, and a full occultation in one place may be a graze or a near-miss elsewhere. Check an event-specific skywatching app or website and enter your observing location; NASA recommends local predictions for timing. NASA skywatching guidance, December 2022

How can I observe one safely?
You do not need equipment to understand or notice a bright nighttime occultation. Binoculars or a telescope may help follow a planet near the Moon’s edge, but they are optional.
For a daytime event, never aim binoculars, a telescope, or a camera near the Sun unless you are using proper solar-safe equipment. NASA warns that looking at or near the Sun through optics can cause serious eye injury. NASA skywatching guidance, June 2026
