Choose abilities by the job you want them to do—survive pressure, control a crowd, apply status effects, distract enemies with summons, or create an opening for melee—and connect that job to what you do next. Remedy describes a combat loop in which melee hits restore Combat Ability resource, abilities can stun enemies and open execution opportunities, and executions temporarily increase melee damage. A strong build makes those actions work together rather than simply collecting powerful-sounding skills.
How abilities fit into a build
Remedy describes three build pillars: supernatural Combat Abilities earned by defeating Resonants, Aberrant weapon forms, and Talents that strengthen synergies between abilities and melee attacks. Some Resonants offer branching rewards, so a first playthrough does not let you unlock everything.
The combat loop gives those choices a practical purpose: use melee to restore ability resource, spend abilities to disrupt enemies or create openings, then capitalize with melee or an execution. Remedy Senior Communications Manager Miika Huttunen puts the resource link simply: “Melee hits restore your Combat Ability resource.” Remedy’s PlayStation Blog overview outlines this interaction. Xbox Wire’s preview likewise describes the melee, ability, and execution interplay, and shows a more tactical setup involving summons and turrets for crowd control; that preview is an illustration, not a measured build ranking. Which ability types work well together?
The combinations below are role-based options drawn from the ability effects described in Epic Games Store’s guide. They are not tested tier rankings: the right choice depends on the encounter, your progression, and how much melee pressure or setup you prefer.

For safer openings: Shield
Shield absorbs damage and can enable a Shield Bash when you dodge. Epic recommends it for survivability and falter: falter staggers an enemy and can expose it to an execution. That makes Shield a sensible choice when you need safer opportunities to close in, rather than a proven best pick for every fight.
For summon pressure: Growth and Spike
Growth summons up to two worm-like allies that fire Mold globules. Spike summons an Astral Spike that attacks nearby foes and can knock them down. Epic recommends pairing them so the summons occupy enemies while Dylan attacks. Treat this as an option for distraction and pressure, not a universal top build.

Other abilities offer different forms of ranged or independent pressure: Barrage throws multiple projectiles, while Volatile Anomaly summons an entity that can also be thrown.
For area damage and displacement: Ground Slam and Push
Ground Slam deals area damage; Push sends enemies flying, potentially into hazards or off ledges. Epic recommends Ground Slam in elevated environments, where its damage increases with height. The height interaction makes the advice environment-dependent, not a general damage ranking.

For status effects: Mold and Astral abilities
Spore Burst and Growth apply Infected. According to Epic’s guide, Infected deals damage over time and explodes if its target also has Burn. Spike and Astral Rebuke apply Astralized, which enhances Burn and Infected buildup. That supports a status-focused approach: set up the relevant effects and take advantage of the Burn–Infected interaction. The guide gives no quantified damage comparison, so it does not establish this as the strongest combination.
For an aerial follow-up: Astral Rebuke
Astral Rebuke erupts beneath enemies and launches them into the air, creating an aerial-combo opening. Pair that opening with a melee form or Talent suited to following up, but the cited sources do not establish a particular weapon pairing as best or tested.

Compare a build by the work it can do and the demands it places on you. These are practical comparison criteria based on Remedy’s combat loop and the documented ability effects, not an official tier list.

- Survival: Do you need defensive coverage, such as Shield, to make close-range pressure safer?
- Crowd control: Can you stagger, knock down, or displace enemies—or keep them occupied with summons?
- Range and rhythm: Do you want to apply pressure from a distance, stay in melee to restore ability resource, or alternate between the two?
- Status interaction: Can your chosen abilities apply effects that work together, such as Infected and Burn?
- Setup and positioning: Does the option depend on elevation, getting close enough to follow up, or allowing summons to draw attention?
- Resource loop: Does the build give you a clear reason to alternate between abilities and melee?
No controlled rankings, damage comparisons, or all-encounter best build are established by these sources. Choose according to your role, the fight in front of you, and the combat rhythm you enjoy.
How progression changes your options
Resonant reward choices can be mutually exclusive at the time you make them unless you reset. Epic’s guide also describes a later Resonant Token that grants an additional Combat Ability choice. In New Game Plus, Remedy says unlocked abilities and Talents persist, and players can equip multiple different Combat Abilities from the same boss, opening more combinations.
Remedy Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov says New Game Plus carries over Aberrant upgrades, health and ability-resource improvements, unlocked supernatural Combat Abilities, Talents, and Artifacts. Traversal abilities remain tied to story progression, while NG+ adds new Talent nodes. Mohov says players can “equip multiple different combat abilities from the same boss, opening up new combinations and synergies that change how encounters play out.” See Remedy’s New Game Plus overview for the progression details.
Adjusting difficulty without abandoning a build
If ability management, positioning, or encounter pressure is getting in the way, Assist Mode lets you adjust Enemy Aggression, Perfect Dodge Window, Enemy Projectile Speed, Incoming and Outgoing Damage, Outgoing Falter, Power Recovery Speed, and melee magnetizing. Remedy’s Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov says the aim is to let players adjust the rules and continue playing when friction becomes too much. Remedy’s Assist Mode overview describes the available settings.
