Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Start by checking the exact URL, HTTP status, response body, and content type—not by disabling plugins or changing security settings. Those details help distinguish a WordPress route or permission error from a web-server, firewall, or other intermediary response.
Start with the response, not a guess
Send the intended request to the correct site hostname and REST route, using the HTTP method the endpoint expects. Record the status code, response body, content type, and relevant request headers before changing settings. WordPress REST API request and response data use JSON, and HTTP status codes communicate API errors; the REST API reference describes that response model.
- A JSON response containing a
rest_*error: the request reached an API response path. Use the code and message to investigate route matching, authentication, permissions, or input. - HTML, a blank response, or an unexpected redirect: investigate URL routing, the web server, a firewall or security layer, and caching or CDN behavior. The request may not be receiving a normal REST API response.
- A status code alone is not a complete diagnosis: inspect the body too. A status encoded in a JSON error is not necessarily the same as the HTTP status.
WordPress explains its REST API response and error conventions in the API reference and its key concepts guide.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | What to check first | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
/wp-json/ returns 404 |
Confirm the hostname and permalink configuration. Try the rest_route query parameter; check server rewrite rules and whether query arguments are forwarded. |
WordPress documents pretty permalinks and rest_route as checks when the REST root returns 404. A rewrite or query-forwarding problem can prevent the request from reaching the API. |
| “No route was found matching the URL and request method” | Check the route spelling, namespace and version, HTTP method, and whether the plugin that registers the route is active. | The requested path and method did not match an available route. This differs from a general connection failure. |
401 or rest_forbidden |
Check how the request is authenticated, whether a REST nonce is present where required, the endpoint’s permission callback, and the user’s capability. | The request may be anonymous or authenticated as a user who lacks permission for that action. |
| 403 with an HTML page or challenge | Inspect web-server, firewall, security-plugin, CDN, and proxy logs and rules. Compare with a simple public core endpoint. | A layer in front of WordPress may block or transform the request before it receives a normal JSON API response. |
| 400 | Validate the route parameters and request payload; then investigate possible theme or plugin conflicts. | Use the specific response body to identify the problem. A 400 by itself does not establish a particular cause. |
| 500 | Check server logs and the code handling the request, including plugin callbacks. Compare the actual HTTP status with any status described inside a JSON error. | Possible causes vary. A support report describes a plugin returning a WP_Error without status data, but that example does not explain every 500. |
| HTML where JSON is expected | Check the endpoint URL, rewrites, redirects, and security or caching layers. | HTML suggests the request received a routing, intermediary, or other nonstandard response instead of the expected API response. |
The routing checks are described in the WordPress key concepts guide. The route and response behavior are covered in the REST API reference. Individual 404, 400, 500, and route-matching support reports illustrate possible cases, not universal diagnoses.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fix a REST root or route 404
- Verify the request target. Confirm the site hostname and that the URL is the intended REST endpoint.
- Check permalinks. If
/wp-json/returns 404, verify the site’s permalink configuration. WordPress identifies enabling pretty permalinks as one possible remedy. - Try the query-parameter route. Test the site’s REST root using
?rest_route=/. If that works while/wp-json/does not, the difference points toward pretty-permalink or rewrite routing rather than a wholly unavailable API. - Check server rewrites and query forwarding. Confirm that requests are routed through WordPress and that query arguments are preserved. The WordPress FAQ’s Nginx example uses
$is_args$argsin thetry_filestarget so query arguments reach WordPress. - For a named route, verify its registration. Check the exact namespace, route, method, and whether the plugin providing it is active.
See the official key concepts guide and REST API FAQ for the documented routing checks.
Resolve authentication and permission errors
The right fix depends on where the request originates. A request made by a logged-in user on the same site has different authentication requirements from an anonymous request or a remote client.

Logged-in requests made from the site
WordPress cookie authentication applies to logged-in use. For a manual same-site request, send a REST nonce, commonly in the X-WP-Nonce header. Without the nonce, WordPress treats the request as unauthenticated. After confirming authentication, check that the user has the capability required for the requested action.
Anonymous requests
Some routes are public; others require authentication or a capability. Check the route’s permission behavior rather than assuming that a 401 or 403 means the whole API is broken. For a custom endpoint, inspect its permission callback and the capability it requires.

Requests from external clients
Confirm which authentication method the remote client is configured to use and whether the endpoint accepts it. WordPress’s authentication guide prefers Application Passwords over its Basic Authentication plugin, which the guide describes as intended for development and testing.
Do not treat CORS as a substitute for authentication. WordPress’s REST API FAQ explains that CORS behavior can affect some authentication methods and that nonces are used for cross-site request forgery protection. Change these settings only when the request context and evidence point to them.

Investigate server, firewall, cache, and plugin interference
If the endpoint is unreachable, returns HTML, or produces a status that does not fit the API response, inspect the layers that can sit between the client and WordPress. Review web-server and firewall logs, then check security tools, caching, CDN or proxy rules, theme behavior, and plugins.
- Compare responses. Test a simple public core endpoint as well as the failing route. Note whether both return the same status and content type.
- Check logs at the time of the request. Look for a blocked request, rewrite failure, redirect, or server error that corresponds to the recorded URL and method.
- Isolate conflicts carefully. In a controlled maintenance context, test likely plugin or theme conflicts one at a time and restore normal operation after each check. Avoid treating a fix reported for another site as a universal solution.
- Escalate server-level symptoms. If logs point to hosting or rewrite configuration that you cannot change safely, ask the host or server administrator to check the request path and query forwarding.
WordPress.org support threads report individual cases involving plugins, rewrite configuration, firewalls, and permission callbacks. They are useful examples of what to investigate, not proof that the same component is responsible on another site; see the connection report and 404 report.

Avoid broad fixes that hide the cause
Do not disable the REST API as a routine repair. WordPress warns that administrative features depend on it, so blocking it can break site functionality as well as the failing request. Prefer a narrowly targeted correction to the route, authentication, permission, rewrite, or intermediary rule identified by the response and logs. The official FAQ also explains the security role of nonces and notes that tightening CORS can interfere with some authentication methods.
