For most WordPress sites, start with the built-in REST API if its endpoints provide the data your application needs. Choose WPGraphQL when clients benefit from selecting exact fields and related content in schema-based queries—and your team is ready to install, extend, secure, and maintain the plugin. Neither is inherently faster: test realistic workloads on your own site.
What is being compared?
The WordPress REST API is included with WordPress and exposes resources as JSON over HTTP. It supports the Block Editor and can be used by any client that can make HTTP requests and process JSON. WPGraphQL is a separate, free, open-source plugin that adds a GraphQL schema to WordPress. Clients use that schema to request specific fields and related objects.
So this is a comparison between WordPress’s core REST interface and the WPGraphQL plugin—not between REST and every possible GraphQL server. WordPress describes its REST API as a way to get data in and out of WordPress using a structured, extensible interface (WordPress REST API Handbook); the plugin’s capabilities depend on its schema and the extensions installed on your site (WPGraphQL).
How the APIs differ in practice
| Decision factor | WordPress REST API | WPGraphQL |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Included with WordPress; core resources have default routes. | Requires installing and maintaining the WPGraphQL plugin. |
| How a client asks for data | Calls resource-oriented URLs using HTTP methods. Responses have defined structures and can include linked or embedded resources. | Sends a query that selects fields and nested relationships exposed by the schema. |
| Discovery | The site’s REST index and OPTIONS requests help discover routes. Route schemas describe accepted and returned data. | Schema introspection and GraphiQL-style tools can help explore fields and compose queries. |
| Pagination | Collections use parameters such as page, per_page, and offset. The documented per_page maximum is 100; response headers can report total records and pages. |
WPGraphQL documents Relay-style cursor pagination, commonly using first/after or last/before. |
| Authentication and writes | Cookie authentication applies to logged-in WordPress contexts and still requires the relevant capability. Remote use can use application passwords where supported. | Most mutations require authentication and appropriate capabilities; mutations use POST. |
| Performance and caching | HTTP resource routes are familiar to HTTP caches, but actual behavior depends on response headers, hosting, and configuration. | Field selection can reduce transferred data and a query can combine related reads. Deep or expensive resolver work can increase server load; supported GET queries, persisted queries, and Smart Cache may help in appropriate configurations. |
| Operational fit | Often requires less additional API infrastructure when core routes meet the need. | Adds GraphQL schema, query, plugin-compatibility, and operational knowledge to maintain. |
For the REST pagination maximum, see the WordPress pagination documentation. Route discovery and schema behavior are covered in the REST API Reference and REST schema guide. WPGraphQL’s pagination and performance guidance is available in its connection documentation and performance guide.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When the REST API is the better fit
- Your application needs standard posts, pages, media, or other resources already exposed by core routes.
- You are building a straightforward integration, script, or client that can work with resource URLs and JSON.
- You want to avoid adding and maintaining a plugin when the built-in interface is sufficient.
- Your team is more familiar with HTTP methods, REST routes, and WordPress’s documented authentication model.
REST endpoints support predictable, resource-oriented URLs and HTTP response codes. Start by checking the site’s REST index and the routes for the content types you need; custom post types and fields may require explicit exposure or configuration.
When WPGraphQL is the better fit
- A headless frontend needs different combinations of fields and related content across screens.
- Reducing separate client requests or avoiding large fixed REST response structures would simplify the application.
- Your team values schema introspection and can work with GraphQL query design.
- The required content and custom fields are available in the WPGraphQL schema through the plugin or compatible extensions.
GraphQL’s flexibility is useful only when the schema actually exposes the data the client needs. Confirm support for custom post types, fields, and plugins on the specific site, and account for the work of maintaining those extensions.

Can you use both?
Yes, they are distinct interfaces, so a site can retain REST for existing integrations while a separate frontend uses WPGraphQL. Whether that is worth operating depends on plugin compatibility, authorization policies, monitoring, and the team’s capacity to maintain both. Do not add a second interface unless it solves a real client need.
Is WPGraphQL faster than REST?
There is no general winner. A GraphQL query can request fewer fields and combine related data, reducing payload size or round trips. But a query with deep relationships or expensive resolvers can increase database and server work. REST performance likewise depends on the number and shape of requests, response size, caching, hosting, and the site’s content and plugins.

WPGraphQL’s comparison page reports one example involving 100 posts: 335 kB and 7.91 seconds for its REST example, versus 6.4 kB and 67 ms for its WPGraphQL example. These are vendor-reported figures from a particular demonstration, not an independent, controlled benchmark or a prediction for other WordPress sites (WPGraphQL comparison). Treat them as an illustration of how query shape can affect results, not as a universal speed claim.
Benchmark the work your site will actually do
- Choose representative screens or integrations, including the content, relationships, filters, and ordering each needs.
- Implement equivalent data requirements with each API; avoid comparing a broad response from one API with a narrowly selected response from the other.
- Test both cache hits and misses, including the invalidation behavior required when content changes.
- Record response size, end-to-end latency, server time, and database or resolver work under production-like hosting, network, authentication, and plugin conditions.
- Repeat for the expected page sizes and traffic patterns, then choose the simpler option that meets performance and operational requirements.
Authentication and safe exposure
Neither API bypasses WordPress access control, and installing an API does not automatically make every custom field safe to publish. For REST, WordPress says cookie authentication is for API use inside WordPress when the current user is logged in, and the user must have the appropriate capability. Application passwords are documented for supported remote use; WordPress warns that its separately documented Basic Authentication plugin should be limited to development and testing (REST API authentication).

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
WPGraphQL’s mutation guidance likewise says most mutations require authentication and appropriate user capabilities, and mutations must use POST (WPGraphQL mutations). For either approach, test anonymous and authenticated access to private content, custom fields, custom post types, and plugin-added fields. Map every editorial or write action to an explicit authorization check.

A practical decision
- Start with REST if core routes cover the data and your client’s needs are straightforward.
- Choose WPGraphQL if selected fields and related content make client queries materially clearer or more efficient, and the necessary schema and operational support are in place.
- Consider both only when distinct existing integrations or frontends justify the extra maintenance.
- Decide performance by measurement, not by claims that one API is always faster.
