Before buying RAM or a new drive, check three separate things: how much memory is installed, how it behaves during your normal work, and whether your exact computer model supports an upgrade. Also check storage capacity and available space. A momentary usage reading—or a low amount of free space by itself—does not prove that hardware needs replacing.
How do I check how much RAM I have?
Installed RAM is the computer’s physical memory capacity. It is different from the amount currently in use, which changes as you open apps and work with files. The steps below apply to Windows 10/11 and macOS, though labels and navigation can vary by release.
Windows 11 and Windows 10: check installed RAM
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Under Device specifications, find the RAM amount. This is installed memory, not a live usage reading.

Mac: check physical memory
- Open Activity Monitor (use Spotlight search if needed).
- Select the Memory tab and read Physical Memory.

How do I see what is using my RAM?
Check live activity while you do the work that feels slow, rather than relying on an idle reading. Close to your usual mix of apps, browser tabs, and files is the most useful context. A busy moment is not, by itself, a reason to upgrade.
Windows: use Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Performance > Memory to inspect memory use, or review the process list to see which apps are using resources.
Task Manager can also help monitor disk activity. Its current-use figures are not the same as the installed RAM amount shown in Settings. See Microsoft’s Task Manager guidance.

Mac: use Activity Monitor’s Memory tab
Along with Physical Memory, examine Memory Used, Memory Pressure, Cached Files, and Swap Used. The app list can help identify which processes are consuming memory. Cached files can be reused when needed; swap uses space on the startup disk. A large Memory Used number alone is not an upgrade diagnosis.
How do I know whether my computer needs more RAM?
Look for persistent strain during normal work, not a single high reading. On a Mac, Apple uses Memory Pressure to summarize how effectively memory is meeting current needs: green indicates efficient use, yellow can indicate a possible future need, and red indicates a need for more RAM. Apple also cautions, “When you have free or unused memory, your computer performance does not necessarily improve.” Read Apple’s guidance on checking whether a Mac needs more RAM.

Windows Task Manager provides live usage and process details, but the cited Windows guidance does not define a universal usage percentage that means every PC should be upgraded. For either platform, consider whether performance problems recur during the work you actually do and whether closing or changing apps improves the situation. No single “right amount” of RAM applies to every workload.
How do I check how much storage space is left on my computer?
Windows: see free space and what is using it
- For a quick check, open File Explorer > This PC and read the available space shown for each drive.
- For a breakdown, open Settings > System > Storage. Windows groups storage use into categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and system or reserved storage.
- To inspect other drives, go to Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives.
- For drive details, open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes. It can show drive type, capacity, and usage.

Mac: review storage in System Settings
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings > General > Storage.
- Review used and available space for the volume and the category breakdown.
Storage labels and screens can differ between macOS versions, so use the wording shown on your Mac. Low free space may be addressed by removing or moving files; it does not automatically mean the drive can or should be upgraded.

Upgradeability depends on the exact model, not just whether the computer is a PC or Mac. Confirm that memory or storage is replaceable or expandable, then verify the supported specifications before buying a part.

Check Mac memory upgradeability
- Hold Option, open the Apple menu, and choose System Information.
- Under Hardware > Memory, look for the Memory Slots pane and its Upgradeable Memory field.
If the Memory Slots pane is absent, Apple says upgradeable memory is not available for that Mac. See Apple’s instructions for checking Mac RAM upgradeability.
Check Windows PC upgradeability
Use the computer manufacturer’s documentation or ask the manufacturer or a retailer about upgrade options for the exact model. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements and upgrade guidance directs users to check with their device manufacturer or retailer about hardware options.
Before ordering memory, verify the supported RAM type, capacity, and configuration. For a drive, confirm that it is replaceable and check the required interface, form factor, and supported capacity. Windows’ Disks & volumes details describe the current drive; they do not establish that a particular replacement will fit or work.
What do Windows 11 minimum requirements mean for an upgrade?
Microsoft lists 4 GB of RAM and a 64 GB or larger storage device as Windows 11 minimum requirements. Those figures establish OS eligibility minimums, not recommended capacities for general use or for your workload. Microsoft notes that apps and features may require more. Check the current Windows 11 specifications alongside the requirements for the software you use.
How should I decide whether an upgrade is worthwhile?
Use the readings to frame the decision, then weigh compatibility and alternatives. There is no universal RAM-use percentage or free-space threshold in these sources that determines the right purchase for every computer.
