A 1 PB storage deployment is a system or service designed around roughly one petabyte of capacity—but that headline does not tell you how much data it can hold, how fast it can serve it, or how many devices it needs. First clarify whether “PB” means decimal or binary capacity and whether the figure is raw, nominal, licensed, or usable. Then size the system for its workload, resilience, growth, and facility constraints.

How much storage is 1 PB?

In the decimal convention commonly used for physical drive capacity, 1 PB is 1,000 TB, or 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. Hitachi Vantara’s Ops Center 11.0.x documentation, last updated March 16, 2026, also describes a logical-capacity convention in which 1 PB is 1,024 TB. These conventions are not the same; when precision matters, ask for the byte count or confirm the vendor’s definition. Strict IEC binary prefixes distinguish PiB and TiB from PB and TB, but product labels and software displays are not always consistent. Hitachi Vantara’s capacity-unit definitions

Why does a system show less than the drive labels?

A capacity difference does not necessarily mean data has disappeared. Decimal and binary units yield different displayed numbers: Quantum says its DXi GUI presents decimal TB, while backup applications may report binary TiB but label them “TB.” In Quantum’s example, 272 decimal TB appears as 247.38 TiB. Check both the unit and the layer being reported—drive, array, volume, file system, or application—before comparing figures. Quantum DXi site-planning documentation

Does 1 PB mean 1 PB of usable space?

No. A 1 PB label may describe raw drive capacity, nominal system capacity, licensed capacity, or usable capacity after protection and system overhead. RAID or other redundancy, formatting, reserved space, over-provisioning, and licensing can all affect what applications can actually use. Ask the vendor to state the usable figure and the assumptions behind it.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For example, QNAP’s published effective-capacity calculation assumes RAID 60 with 24 TB hard drives, conversion from PB to PiB, and pool over-provisioning. That is a configuration-specific estimate, not a general conversion from advertised capacity to usable space. QNAP’s petabyte storage configuration

Licensing can use a different definition again. IBM Storage Scale’s 4.2.0 FAQ defines its per-PB licensing measure as binary (250 bytes); that is specific to IBM’s licensing, not a universal rule for storage products. IBM Storage Scale licensing FAQ

What might the hardware look like?

There is no standard 1 PB box. A deployment might use a NAS with expansion shelves, a modular backup appliance, or a scale-out storage platform. Drive count, enclosure count, rack space, networking, and usable capacity depend on the design and workload.

NAS with expansion shelves

QNAP publishes a nominal 1 PB example consisting of one TS-h2287XU-RP NAS, four TL-R1620Sep-RP JBOD enclosures, 80 hard drives, and six SSDs. Its effective-capacity estimate uses the RAID 60, 24 TB drive, PB-to-PiB, and over-provisioning assumptions described above. Treat it as one vendor’s worked configuration, not a universal hardware recipe; confirm the products’ current availability and the usable capacity in the proposed configuration.

Purpose-built backup appliance

Quantum’s DXi9100 site-planning documentation lists a two-array, two-expansion configuration with 2 PB of licensed usable capacity and an 18U rack footprint. This is a backup appliance with configurable capacity and expansion, not a directly comparable general-purpose file or object store. Quantum DXi9100 site-planning documentation

Bulk-transfer appliance

Microsoft lists Data Box Heavy at 1 PB total capacity and 800 TB usable capacity per order. It is a physical device for copying large datasets to Azure using standard NAS protocols such as SMB and NFS—not a persistent storage cluster for ongoing workloads. It is relevant when the problem is moving a very large existing dataset, rather than hosting it long term. Microsoft Azure Data Box

Performance-oriented designs

In an article about its PBSSD concept, Samsung describes analytics and AI/ML training as petabyte-scale use cases and discusses object storage and software-defined storage. It describes a design with up to 16 E3.S SSDs of up to 15.36 TB each, for a maximum of 244 TB in a 1RU chassis, and an upcoming design intended to support 1 PB in 2RU. The 2RU figure was described as upcoming in that article, so it should not be treated as a currently shipping specification without confirmation. Samsung also describes capacity subscriptions in 244 TB increments and 1-, 3-, or 5-year terms; confirm current commercial terms directly. Samsung’s PBSSD article

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Usable capacity: State decimal or binary units and distinguish raw, formatted, protected, reserved, and licensed capacity. Include planned growth and free-space reserves.
  • Performance: Specify sustained read and write throughput, latency, IOPS, and concurrent users or jobs. Include behavior during rebuilds or failures; require measurements for your workload rather than relying on capacity labels.
  • Resilience and recovery: Identify which drive, node, or enclosure failures the design must tolerate. Set replication, backup, recovery-time, and recovery-point requirements separately; redundancy alone is not a complete recovery plan.
  • Expansion: Check whether growth means adding drives or shelves, adding scale-out nodes, or buying more capacity licenses. Find out whether compute and storage can scale independently.
  • Facility and connectivity: Confirm rack units, power, cooling, cabling, ports, and weight against the actual system specification. A capacity figure does not establish the footprint or facility requirements.
  • Operations and lifecycle: Account for monitoring, maintenance windows, software and support lifecycles, staff skills, migration, spares, and vendor lock-in.

How should you compare 1 PB options—and what do they cost?

Compare systems against the same workload and the same definition of capacity. A backup appliance’s licensed usable capacity, a NAS configuration’s nominal capacity, and a transfer device’s total capacity answer different questions; putting their PB figures side by side without those qualifications can mislead.

There is no supported generic market price for a 1 PB deployment. A meaningful lifecycle estimate must be based on a specific design and include hardware or subscription, software, support, facilities, network, power, spares, migration, and refresh costs. Request a quote against your usable-capacity target, performance needs, resilience requirements, and expansion plan rather than treating “1 PB” as a price specification.
