Choose the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller if you want a full-size, one-piece pad, mappable rear buttons, a headphone jack or Nintendo’s longer stated battery estimate. Choose Joy-Con 2 if you play in handheld mode, share controllers for local multiplayer, or want mouse controls in a compatible game. Switch 2 includes one left-and-right Joy-Con 2 pair, so the Pro Controller is an optional purchase; an extra Joy-Con 2 pair is mainly for another player or as a replacement.
How the Pro Controller and Joy-Con 2 differ
The main distinction is how you hold and use them. The Pro Controller is a conventional single-piece controller for playing with the console in TV or tabletop mode. Joy-Con 2 attaches to the Switch 2 for handheld play, and the controllers can also be used wirelessly for tabletop play or separately in supported games and play styles.

Choose the Pro Controller for a conventional pad and extra features
The Pro Controller is the better fit when you want both hands on one full-size controller rather than holding two separate Joy-Con 2 controllers. Its GL and GR buttons on the back can be mapped, which gives you additional inputs to assign in supported games or settings. It also includes a CTIA-standard 3.5 mm audio jack, a C Button, motion controls, HD rumble 2 and built-in amiibo functionality, according to Nintendo’s product listing.

Nintendo estimates approximately 40 hours of battery life and approximately three hours to charge the Pro Controller. These are manufacturer estimates; your actual runtime depends on use. The figures make it the stronger choice if you want longer intervals between charges, but they do not establish a guaranteed runtime.
Choose Joy-Con 2 for handheld play, sharing and mouse controls
Joy-Con 2 is the practical choice for handheld play because the pair attaches directly to the console. Away from handheld mode, it can be used wirelessly in tabletop play. In supported games and play styles, each controller can also be used individually, making the included pair useful for some local multiplayer without buying another controller set.

Check mouse support in the games you play
Joy-Con 2 has mouse controls; the Pro Controller does not have that documented function. Nintendo says mouse controls work in compatible games and can also be used to navigate the HOME Menu and some applications. Check whether the specific game supports mouse input before choosing Joy-Con 2 for that feature. Nintendo recommends a flat surface, notes that responsiveness can vary by surface, and says some games may require the Joy-Con 2 strap. See the Joy-Con 2 FAQ for its usage guidance.
Know what comes with the console
Switch 2 includes a left-and-right Joy-Con 2 pair and two Joy-Con 2 straps. Buy an extra pair if you need more controllers for your group or need a replacement, rather than assuming the console comes without Joy-Con. The Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip is sold separately and does not include controllers; Nintendo describes it as a way to hold detached Joy-Con 2 in a classic-style arrangement and charge them.

Battery life, charging and audio
Nintendo lists the Pro Controller at approximately 40 hours of battery life and approximately 3 hours to charge. For Joy-Con 2, Nintendo lists up to 20 hours and approximately 3.5 hours to charge. These are estimates from Nintendo’s current product and support information, not head-to-head test results; actual battery life varies with use. The Pro Controller has a CTIA-standard 3.5 mm audio jack. The cited Nintendo Joy-Con 2 feature information does not list an equivalent audio jack.

The Pro Controller and Joy-Con 2 discussed here are designed for Switch 2 only. Nintendo says original Switch Joy-Con and the original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, subject to game and feature compatibility. Original Joy-Con cannot attach to the Switch 2 console. Original Switch Joy-Con accessories—including grips, straps, wheels and charging accessories—are not compatible with Joy-Con 2. Check Nintendo’s compatibility guidance before relying on an older controller or accessory.

- Choose the Pro Controller for a traditional one-piece pad, mappable GL/GR rear buttons, a headphone jack or longer manufacturer-stated battery life.
