There is no single voter ID required everywhere in the United States. What you need depends on your state and whether you vote in person or by mail. Check your state or local election office’s current instructions before you go or return a ballot; the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s state and local election office directory can help you find the right office.
What ID should you bring to vote in person?
Use the current rules for your state and election—not a nationwide list. States differ in the documents they accept and in how they verify a voter’s identity. The EAC’s April 2025 overview reports that, in 2024, 36 states had laws requesting or requiring some form of identification for in-person voting; 14 states and Washington, D.C., used other identity-verification methods. Those figures describe 2024, not a guaranteed checklist for a 2026 election. Read the EAC’s overview.
Depending on state rules, examples of accepted documents may include a driver’s license, state-issued ID, passport, military ID, tribal ID, or another qualifying photo ID. Some jurisdictions may accept certain non-photo documents, such as a utility bill or bank statement. These are examples, not a universal list: check the election office’s instructions to confirm whether a document qualifies and whether it must be current or show a particular address.
Does a federal rule apply to first-time voters who registered by mail?
A separate federal identification rule may apply if you are voting in a federal election and are a first-time voter in your state who registered by mail. The EAC says possible proof includes a current, valid photo ID or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or government document showing your name and address. Exceptions apply, and states may impose additional requirements. See the EAC’s voter guidance and confirm the rule with your state election office.

What if you do not have an accepted ID?
Do not assume you must stay home. In strict-ID states, a voter may be able to cast a provisional ballot and then provide required documentation within a period set by state law. Some states also have exceptions or other procedures. The ballot process, any deadline, and what you need to submit vary, so contact your local election office promptly and ask exactly what to do. Find your election office.
Do mail ballots require voter ID?
Mail-ballot verification is different from showing ID at an in-person polling place. A returned ballot may be checked using a signature or other identifying information. The required envelope fields, any witness or signature rules, and the process and deadline for correcting missing or mismatched information vary by state. Follow the instructions that come with your ballot and check your state’s guidance; do not assume an incomplete ballot will be counted.
