OpenBao is an identity-based system for managing secrets and encryption. It centralizes sensitive data, authenticates people and applications before granting access, and uses policies to limit which resources they can use. It can also issue short-lived credentials for supported systems, provide encryption services, and record requests and responses when audit devices are configured.
What OpenBao does
OpenBao gives organizations a central service for managing items such as API tokens, passwords, encryption keys, and certificates. Clients can interact with it through a web UI, command-line interface, or HTTP API. Rather than acting as a shared folder of credentials, it checks a client’s identity and permissions before returning sensitive data. OpenBao’s overview describes these capabilities.
Secure storage
OpenBao can store arbitrary key/value secrets. It encrypts data before sending it to persistent storage, so the storage backend does not receive the secret contents in plaintext as part of that write path.
Dynamic credentials
For supported systems and credential types, a secrets engine can generate credentials when they are needed and associate them with a lease. The lease can be renewed through OpenBao’s APIs, and credentials can be revoked. Exact behavior depends on the secrets engine and the system it manages; this does not mean every database, Kubernetes setup, or credential type is supported.

Encryption as a service
An application can ask OpenBao to encrypt or decrypt data without storing that data in OpenBao. The application can then keep the encrypted data in another system while using OpenBao for the cryptographic operation.
How identity and policies control access
OpenBao’s access flow is authenticate, validate, authorize, then access. A client presents authentication information; an authentication method checks it against a trusted source and returns a token associated with policy. OpenBao evaluates that policy before allowing operations on particular paths. Policies can give users, services, and applications different levels of access.

The key operational detail is that authentication alone does not grant unrestricted access. The policy attached to a client’s token determines which paths and actions are allowed. Narrow policies help limit the impact if a token is misused.
How OpenBao protects stored data and connections
OpenBao’s security model describes a barrier that encrypts data sent to the storage backend with AES-256-GCM and 96-bit nonces. When data is decrypted, authentication tags are checked. The model also specifies TLS for client-to-server connections to verify the server and establish a secure channel, and mutually authenticated TLS for traffic between cluster nodes. These are documented design properties, not a guarantee that any deployment is secure regardless of its configuration. See the security model.

Encryption at rest has an important boundary: OpenBao’s threat model excludes arbitrary control of the storage backend. An attacker with backend access may still see that secret material exists and is stored, even if its contents remain confidential. Storage encryption should therefore be treated as one part of a security design, not protection against every kind of infrastructure compromise. OpenBao’s architecture documentation describes the storage and sealing design.
Why OpenBao starts sealed
An OpenBao server starts sealed; normal operations require it to be unsealed. The architecture documentation describes Shamir’s Secret Sharing as the default unseal approach: key material is split into shares, and a configured threshold must be met to reconstruct it. It also describes auto-unseal using a trusted cloud key management service or hardware security module (HSM).

These approaches create different operational responsibilities. With Shamir shares, an organization must securely distribute, protect, and recover enough shares to meet the threshold. With auto-unseal, it must manage the external key service and its availability and access controls. The documentation identifies these options but does not establish that any particular HSM product is compatible; check the documentation for the OpenBao version and integration in use before selecting hardware.

Audit devices manage OpenBao audit logs. The documentation says requests and responses pass through configured audit devices, and that when audit logging is enabled, requests and responses must be logged before secret material is returned to a client. A complete audit trail is not automatic merely because OpenBao is running: audit devices must be configured and logging enabled. Operators also need to retain and monitor the resulting logs. What to assess in an OpenBao deployment
- Identity and permissions: Which authentication methods fit your users and workloads, and do policies restrict access to only the necessary paths and operations?
- Unseal and recovery: Who controls Shamir shares or the external KMS/HSM keys, and can authorized operators restore service if the unseal mechanism is unavailable?
- Credential lifecycle: Does the relevant secrets engine support the target system and credential type? How are leases renewed, and what happens when credentials are revoked or expire?
- Audit operations: Which audit devices are configured, and how will logs be retained, protected, and reviewed?
- Threat assumptions: What protections are in place for the storage backend and surrounding infrastructure, given that the documented threat model does not cover arbitrary backend control?
The official overview, security model, and glossary pages are labeled Version 2.7.x. The sealing details cited above come from the “next” architecture documentation, so verify them against the release version you deploy.
