EmuDeck AutoMap is described in a community discussion as a feature that automatically configures controller input for emulators that do not detect controllers on their own. It is intended to reduce manual setup, but its current supported emulators, exact settings path, and other details are not confirmed in the official documentation available here. It also is not the only mapping layer: Steam Input profiles, EmuDeck configuration, and an emulator’s own input settings can all affect what a controller does.
What EmuDeck AutoMap does—and what is confirmed
A community discussion about EmuDeck 2.7 describes AutoMap as an option to let EmuDeck set up controls in emulators that do not automatically detect controllers. The post also reports support for external controllers and setup for up to four players. Those details are community-reported, not verified by current official release notes, so treat them as an indication of the feature’s intent rather than a definitive compatibility list. Read the community discussion.
The official guides describe several related but distinct parts of controller setup. Steam Input provides a standardized control layer and emulator profiles; EmuDeck supplies configurations for selected emulators; and some emulators have their own mapping tools. As a result, AutoMap should not be taken to mean that every emulator uses the same settings or that one automatic step configures every multiplayer device.
How the controller-mapping layers fit together
| Layer | Where it applies | What to use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Input | Steam’s controller layer, used by EmuDeck to help standardize Steam Deck controls across emulators | Selecting available emulator layouts and using profiles that can include emulator hotkeys. Steam Input can also affect whether an emulator sees native device features such as gyro. EmuDeck hotkeys guide |
| EmuDeck-provided profile or configuration | Selected emulators, through layouts available in Steam Game Mode | Start with the emulator’s EmuDeck profile when one is available. The FAQ suggests Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad as a starting layout when there is no EmuDeck Steam Input profile. EmuDeck FAQ |
| Emulator-native mapping | The emulator’s own input settings | Use it for bindings and device configuration specific to that emulator. For example, EmuDeck’s Cemu instructions use Cemu’s SDL controller selection and Add auto-map control; that is Cemu’s feature, not EmuDeck AutoMap. Cemu setup guide |
| Steam controller order | Steam’s recognized controller-device priority | Use it if an external pad is connected but is not being treated as player one. External-controller guide |
Set up a controller when an emulator does not respond
- Check whether a Steam Input layout is available. In Steam Game Mode, open the game or emulator’s controller layout screen and select an EmuDeck profile if one is offered. EmuDeck documents profile availability for selected emulators rather than every program. See the hotkeys and profiles guide.
- If there is no profile, choose a baseline layout. Use
Gamepad with Joystick Trackpadas the FAQ’s suggested starting point, then check whether the emulator responds. See the FAQ. - Inspect the emulator’s own input settings. Confirm that the intended controller or device is selected and that the bindings are assigned. Follow that emulator’s instructions; a control that auto-maps inside one emulator is not the same as EmuDeck AutoMap.
- Consider whether Steam Input is masking a native feature. If ordinary buttons work but a feature such as gyro is unavailable to the emulator, test the documented direct-controller approach by disabling Steam Input for the relevant setup. The exact steps depend on the game or emulator and controller. See EmuDeck’s controller guidance.
External controllers and player order
A USB or Bluetooth controller is optional; AutoMap is not described as requiring separate hardware. When using an external controller in Game Mode, Steam’s device order can determine which pad is treated as player one. EmuDeck’s guide says that with one external controller, you may need to move it ahead of the Steam Deck in the controller order. Open Steam’s Quick Access and Quick Settings menus and adjust the order there, then check the emulator again. External-controller setup and troubleshooting.

Multiplayer setup still depends on the emulator
Automatic mapping does not remove emulator-specific multiplayer configuration. EmuDeck’s guides document different device and port steps for different programs, so configure each emulator according to its own instructions.

The Ryujinx guide assigns players to Steam Virtual Gamepads and saves the configuration. Follow its device assignment steps rather than assuming the same player numbering will carry over from another emulator. Ryujinx guide.

What to check when mapping behaves unexpectedly
- The emulator does not detect input: check the active Steam Input layout, then verify the selected device and bindings inside the emulator.
- An external pad is not player one: inspect Steam’s controller order in Quick Access and Quick Settings and prioritize the external controller.
- Gyro or another native feature is missing: check whether Steam Input is translating the controller and whether direct access is needed for that feature.
- Several players are involved: assign ports or virtual devices using that emulator’s own multiplayer guide.
- A mapping keeps changing or being overwritten: the current AutoMap toggle path and supported emulator list are not established by official documentation cited here. Avoid relying on an assumed setting path; check the current EmuDeck release documentation and the emulator’s input configuration.
