Choose Supabase when your app needs PostgreSQL or benefits from its integrated APIs and services. Choose Turso when SQLite compatibility, small databases per tenant, or an embedded local-first workflow is central to the design. Neither is a universal winner for edge and serverless apps: the right fit depends on your data model, connection pattern, read freshness, write path, and the rest of your stack.

Supabase vs. Turso at a glance

Decision Supabase Turso
Database model Managed PostgreSQL; a fit for PostgreSQL features, tools, and compatible applications. SQLite-compatible database architecture; a fit for SQLite-oriented applications and database-per-tenant designs.
Platform scope Includes a Data API, authentication, storage, realtime features, and deployment workflows. Database-focused option that can be combined with separately chosen application services.
Serverless access Documented options include the Data API and a shared connection pooler in transaction mode. Positioned for async, edge, and serverless use; check the current product and client requirements for your runtime.
Global and local data One primary region per project, with optional asynchronous read replicas and geo-routing for eligible Data API reads. Describes replicas near users and embedded replicas for local-first or offline-capable applications.
Best first question Does the application require PostgreSQL or the wider Supabase service surface? Does the application benefit from SQLite compatibility, per-tenant databases, or local embedded data?

These are architecture-based recommendations, not benchmark results. Neither provider has been established as faster or cheaper for a particular workload; test your own queries, concurrency, and monthly usage.

Choose by data model and platform needs

Choose Supabase for PostgreSQL and integrated services

Supabase is the more natural candidate if your schema or application depends on PostgreSQL features, established Postgres tools, or PostgreSQL-compatible workflows. Its broader platform can also reduce the number of services you assemble separately when you need authentication, file storage, realtime functionality, or a Data API alongside the database.

Frontend applications can access the Data API over REST or GraphQL. This is not simply a way to avoid database connections: the documented access model requires Row Level Security (RLS) to be enabled and policies to permit the intended access. With RLS enabled and no policies, requests are denied. Treat browser access as a security-design decision: define and test policies for each exposed table rather than relying on the obscurity of a client or endpoint.

Choose Turso for SQLite-compatible and tenant-oriented designs

Turso is worth evaluating when SQLite-compatible SQL fits the application, particularly if you want many small databases, such as one per tenant, or a file-oriented model. Its product materials also describe replicas near users and embedded replicas that can sync on demand for local-first workflows. Those are different design goals from connecting every request to a central relational database.

Keep the product names precise. Turso’s product page describes Turso Database as a ground-up rewrite, while the Turso-maintained libSQL project describes libSQL as an open-source fork of SQLite. They are related, but not interchangeable labels. Check which Turso product, client, and compatibility guarantees your application will actually use; do not assume every libSQL characteristic applies to Turso Database, or vice versa.

How serverless connections differ

Supabase: select the connection pattern for the runtime

Supabase documents separate connection approaches for frontend access, serverless or edge functions, persistent backends, and migration or operational work. For serverless and edge functions, its documented pattern is the shared pooler in transaction mode because these runtimes open many short-lived connections. A direct connection that suits a long-running backend is not automatically the right choice for a function runtime.

Transaction pooling returns the database connection to the pool at the end of a transaction, so session state does not persist between transactions. Supabase identifies prepared statements and query pipelining as limitations of this mode. Confirm your driver and ORM support the selected pooling mode, and configure them accordingly. The connection guide also notes that serverless runtimes may freeze between requests and leave stale pooled sockets; handle reconnects rather than assuming a socket remains usable after a pause. Direct connections may suit persistent backends where networking permits them, while IPv4-only environments have separate pooling or add-on considerations.

Supabase also specifies direct connections for migrations and operational commands such as backup and restore. Keep those workflows distinct from the connection pattern used by request-handling functions. See Supabase’s connection guidance for current connection details.

Turso: validate the runtime and client combination

Turso positions its architecture for edge and serverless workloads and describes async I/O and replicas as part of that fit. Before committing, verify the current client and runtime support, connection setup, cold- and warm-runtime behavior, and the product-specific limits that apply to your deployment. Product positioning alone does not establish the latency or throughput your application will achieve.

Global reads are not the same as global writes

Supabase uses a primary region with optional read replicas

Each Supabase project has one primary region. Supabase recommends locating it close to users; the available region choice depends on infrastructure capacity. Additional read replicas can serve read workloads, but they follow the primary asynchronously, so a recently committed update may not yet be visible on a replica.

The read-replica guide documents geo-routing for eligible Data API GET requests. Authentication requests still go to the primary, and other services have their own routing limits. A replica therefore does not make every database operation or Supabase service local to every user. Supabase also says that region selection is a data-location control, not proof of regulatory compliance; assess applicable compliance requirements separately. See available regions for its region guidance.

Turso’s replicas and embedded replicas serve different patterns

Turso describes replicas placed near users, and an embedded replica that syncs with the cloud on demand for offline-capable applications. The latter is a local-data workflow, not just a remote read replica in another location. Before relying on it, establish which reads and writes work offline, how synchronization and conflicts behave for your application, what is durable locally, and what happens when a device or service reconnects. Turso describes the capability, but the exact behavior and suitability must be verified for the product and configuration you plan to use. See Turso’s product overview.

Compare the real monthly cost, not the headline plan

Supabase billing combines the organization plan and its quotas with dedicated Postgres compute for each project; compute is charged independently of usage. The following are examples listed on Supabase’s billing page accessed October 3, 2026. They are plan allowances, not an apples-to-apples price comparison, and applicable overages may apply.

Supabase allowance Free plan Pro/Team plans
Edge Function invocations 500,000 included 2 million included; overage listed beyond the allowance
Egress 5 GB included 250 GB included; overage listed beyond the allowance
Database size per project 500 MB 8 GB disk per project; overage listed beyond the allowance

These figures are Supabase’s published 2026 plan examples, not a prediction of a particular bill. Check the current billing page before budgeting because allowances and pricing can change.

Turso’s product page, accessed October 3, 2026, describes embedded use as free and advertises a free cloud allowance, but the available information does not establish a normalized workload price comparable with Supabase. Do not conclude that either service is cheaper without modeling the same storage, read and write volume, database count, replica geography, egress, environments, and compute needs against current pricing.

Preview and deployment workflows are not equivalent

Supabase’s branching workflow starts branch environments from the main project. Its documented deployment steps include health checks, applying migrations and secrets, and deploying changed Edge Functions. Preview branching for pull requests requires the Pro plan, according to its branching guide.

Turso describes copy-on-write database branches as metadata-only. A branch label does not tell you whether two systems copy the same data, how test data is populated, what merging means, or which plan supports the workflow. Compare those details alongside deployment automation and environment cleanup before deciding which preview process fits your team.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Confirm SQL compatibility. List the database features, types, constraints, extensions, and queries your application requires. Test them with your ORM, drivers, and migration process on the candidate product.
  2. Map the runtime’s connection behavior. Identify whether requests come from a browser, short-lived function, or persistent backend. For Supabase, validate the Data API or transaction-pooler path for that runtime; for Turso, validate the current client and product path.
  3. Write down freshness and locality requirements. Specify where reads happen, where writes must go, and whether a recently written value must be visible immediately. Include primary-region placement, replica lag, and service routing in the design.
  4. Decide whether offline behavior is essential. If it is, test the exact embedded-replica synchronization and recovery behavior your application needs rather than treating offline support as a generic checkbox.
  5. Count the services you would otherwise operate. Include authentication, storage, realtime, observability, migrations, and preview environments in the comparison, not just the database engine.
  6. Model and test the actual workload. Benchmark representative schemas, queries, contention, and read/write mixes, then compare a monthly estimate that includes storage, invocations, egress, replicas, and development environments.
