To migrate a SQLite database to Turso Cloud, prepare a consistent copy of the database file, then import it with the Turso CLI: turso db import /path/to/database.db. Turso’s published procedure recommends enabling write-ahead logging (WAL) and checkpointing the file before import. Verify the imported schema and data before switching your application to the new database.
Choose a migration route
Turso documents two ways to move an SQLite file into Turso Cloud. Use the CLI for an operator-led import; use the Platform API upload flow when you need to automate provisioning and upload. Neither route is established as universally preferable, so base the choice on how you manage database creation, credentials, validation, and deployment.

Prepare a consistent SQLite file
Keep the original file unchanged until you have checked the Turso import. Coordinate a maintenance window or otherwise pause writes while preparing the final copy; otherwise, the file you import might not contain the intended final state. Turso’s April 2025 instructions recommend preparing the file in WAL mode and truncating its WAL checkpoint before upload.

Open the copy with the SQLite command-line tool:
sqlite3 /path/to/my-database.db. -
At the SQLite prompt, run
PRAGMA journal_mode=WAL;. -
Run
PRAGMA wal_checkpoint(TRUNCATE);. -
Check the journal mode with
PRAGMA journal_mode;, then exit SQLite with.quit.
These preparation commands follow Turso’s published migration instructions. Use the prepared copy for import, not the only copy of your source database.

Import the file with the Turso CLI
Install and authenticate the Turso CLI according to the current CLI documentation, then run the import command with your file path:
turso db import /path/to/my-database.db
Turso’s import guide says the command imports the database’s tables, data, and schema, and names the cloud database after the file without the .db extension. To import into an existing group, use:
turso db import --group <group_name> /path/to/my-database.db
Check the current import guide for the supported flags and behavior when you run the migration, since CLI documentation can change.
Use the Platform API for automation
For a scripted workflow, Turso’s April 2025 announcement describes creating a database with seed type database_upload, creating a database auth token, and uploading the SQLite file to that database’s upload endpoint. Consult the announcement and current Platform API documentation for the required requests, credentials, and endpoint details.

The announcement reported support for uploads up to 20 GB at the time it was published on April 14, 2025. Treat that as a historical limit, not a guarantee of the current maximum: confirm applicable account, region, and API limits before planning an upload around that size.
Verify the import before switching applications
Connect to the new cloud database with the CLI shell:
turso db shell <database-name>
Turso’s shell documentation explains the command. Before changing your application configuration, check the imported database against the source and exercise it in a staging or otherwise controlled environment.

Confirm expected tables and indexes are present.

Compare row counts and selected records in important tables.

Run the application’s critical reads and writes against the imported database.

Inventory custom SQLite extensions, virtual tables, functions, triggers, and application assumptions. The import instructions do not establish compatibility for every SQLite feature or workload, so test the features your application actually uses.
Cut over and keep a rollback path
After validation, update the application’s connection settings using the connection details and database auth token required by the relevant Turso SDK. Keep the source database available until you have checked the new connection in the intended environment. If validation or application checks fail, pause cutover and continue using the source while you investigate the discrepancy.
Local development is a different workflow
If you only want to open an existing SQLite file locally during development, Turso’s local-development documentation describes local database packages that open SQLite files. It also documents restoring a production dump into a local database:

Export a dump from the Turso database:
turso db shell your-database .dump > dump.sql. -
Load the dump into a local SQLite file:
cat dump.sql | sqlite3 local.db.
This local workflow is for development; it does not migrate a database to hosted Turso Cloud.
