For routine Old School RuneScape item deals, use the Grand Exchange when it suits the transaction. For a direct player trade, agree on the exact terms first, keep the exchange in one trade, and inspect the offer before accepting. Cancel if anything changes or feels pressured. Jagex’s guidance is to “Complete all deals in one trade,” and it warns that Grand Exchange prices are guides—not guaranteed valuations.

Choose the right way to trade

Use the Grand Exchange for routine exchanges

The Grand Exchange is a practical option for ordinary buying and selling when the item and transaction suit it. Confirm the item and quantity shown in the interface, and treat the displayed price as a guide rather than a promise of what an item is worth. Jagex explains its scam guidance in Scams.

Use a direct trade only when the terms are clear

A direct player trade lets you inspect the offer in the trade interface, but it also requires care: verify the exact items and quantities, and do not let another player rush you into accepting. There is no quantitative evidence establishing that either method is always safer or that a particular direct offer is fair.

How to complete a direct player trade safely

  1. Agree on the exact deal. Confirm the item, quantity, and payment before opening the trade. Avoid terms that depend on a later return, bonus, or separate transaction.
  2. Inspect the trade window. Check every item and quantity displayed. Do not rely on what the other player says or on what appeared in an earlier screen.
  3. Re-check before accepting. Read the final screen carefully. If an item or quantity has changed, cancel and start again only if you still want the deal.
  4. Cancel when anything is unclear. You do not have to finish a trade because you have already spent time on it. Do not accept a complicated multi-step arrangement.

Scam patterns that should make you stop

  • Trust trading: The other player asks you to hand over coins or a valuable item with a promise to return it later, perhaps with a bonus. Jagex identifies this as a scam method; do not hand over the item.
  • Trade-window changes: The displayed offer does not match what was agreed, or changes while you are deciding. Cancel rather than trying to repair the deal under pressure.
  • Pressure or unusual instructions: Repeated requests to hop worlds, use a particular item, follow someone, or complete several steps can be warning signs. Jagex also warns that scammers may work in teams and that offers that sound too good to be true deserve caution.
  • Wilderness assurances: Do not enter the Wilderness because another player says a trade or meeting is safe. Enter only if you are prepared for the possibility of dying and losing items.

Is the Grand Exchange price accurate?

Not as a guaranteed valuation. Jagex says the displayed Grand Exchange price is a guide, so do not treat it as proof that an item offered in payment or as a loan has that exact value. Check the item and quantity in the interface, and decide whether the terms are acceptable to you rather than relying on the displayed figure alone. Jagex does not provide a current price list or a guarantee of fair value in its scam guidance.

Protect your account and items

Trades are safer when another person cannot get into your account. Jagex’s Security tips recommend securing your account and the services connected to it:

  • Use a unique password that you do not reuse on other sites.
  • Enable an authenticator.
  • Review linked accounts and remove any you do not recognize.
  • Secure the email account associated with your game account.
  • Set a RuneScape Bank PIN to help protect bank items from someone who does not know it.

Be cautious with messages that ask for private information or send you to a login page. Jagex advises entering details only on legitimate sites you have navigated to and checked, and avoiding links that lead to password-entry pages. If a security email seems suspicious, go to the account site directly and manage settings there rather than following the message’s link. See Phishing.

What to do if you are scammed

  1. Report the player through the available in-game reporting options.
  2. Provide evidence that can help Jagex investigate; Jagex says more evidence makes investigation easier.
  3. Do not assume the lost items will be restored. Jagex says scamming breaks in-game rules and serious cases may lead to a mute or ban, but that is enforcement against the scammer—not a guarantee of recovery for the victim.

Are Old School Bonds different?

Old School Bonds are virtual in-game items, not physical products. Jagex says they can be traded directly between players or through the Grand Exchange for gold, and that they are tradeable only within Old School RuneScape. Treat a Bond exchange with the same care as any other trade: verify the offer and do not hand it over on a promise of a later return. See Jagex’s Bonds guidance.
